hiya

our school is having a prom. i cant decide weather to wear a fishtail lengha or a saree or a churidaar suit. what do you think would be the best?

Is this an all asian only prom? Normally the ladies here wear an evening dress to proms.

Where is this prom? I think of those options, a sari is best. Desi clothes are lovely, but if you want an opportunity to dress up in something different, wear a dress.

^ Based on some of the threads i've read here, asian clothes for school events are more popular in the UK than in US..

i wore a strapless gown on my prom but wore a shawl over my arms and shoulders, it didnt look indecent at all lol

Neelam, out of the three choices I would siggest going with the fish tail lehnga. Why dont you show us some pics of the dressed u have in mind?

hmmm...I would def. wear a dress rather then a costume or w/e ur suggesting...I mean you only get to go to prom once, might as well dress up

and even tho my mom would HATE it if I wore a strappy dress or w/e...I would still do it only becuase its one day, i would go change at a friends house and tell my mom after I got home...lol

I wont be going to prom since I moved and yata yata, long story but DEF. wear somthing like a dress or w/e...seriosuly!

there are tons of adorable shrug's out there in different fabrics and sleeve lengths if you do end up getting a spaghetti-strapped or strapless dress and a shawl is too old-maid for you.
i say wear a dress- after all, when else will you get the chance to?

out of your three options, i'd do the fishtail lehenga- its a bit more formal.

out of ur choices go for fish leghna. other den dat i suggest wear a dresss since its a chance and da moment to do so. buy a decent dress dat wont look houchie. something decent and elegant. i think macy's have a g8 collection !

yh its the end of year 11 at a local hotel
dont want 2 wear strapless dress its not me but i think they luk gawjus
its nt an all asian thing
sara516 ppl tend to wear asian dresses cuz they are more detailed
the proms in july but have got 2 start planning now cuz otherwise will collide with gcse's
might have a fish tail lengha made from a tailor
nt sure yet

i chose to not go desi for my prom but a lot of other desi girls (the few who had their parents permission to attend) did.

i think if you go for a saree you need to have a blouse that really shows off your back, and something that is multi colored or a bold show stopping color like black or red. if not you may look aunty

also a lot of girls bought two piece prom dresses and the beading on them weren’t nearly as nice as my lenghas and so when some of my friends came in wearing lenghas people were just so amazed at how nicely it was.

i think all in all prom should be youthful, fun colors, and if you chose to go desi go with a fitted fishtail or mermaid…

also don’t forget about those straight skirt styled lenghas that were popular from movies like mujhe dosti karoge:

also here are a few lenghas that i think would look great, remember desis are way better at dramatic elegant earrings, and working with different vibrant colors than white people are. if you are going desi go for that.

I still dont think you should wear something desi...dont get me wrong they are AMAZING but you get to wear those anyways, why not wear something like a dress, its ONLY one day, I mean it cant repeate itself

even then you can wear a nice gown with desi jewelry to make yourself stand out

my best friend did that and it was really cute

things like jhoomers, tikkas are all things they haven't really been familiar with and bangles are really in style, but they haven't see the dangling bangles desis have they just see what they get in stores.
