Re: Naming a muslim child
Aray bhai, disagree as much as you want… but why resort to name-calling. Iss tarah aap ka argument mazeed improve tau nahi ho jaata. You responded to my post by calling it “bakwas”, did you see me call you any names?
Waisay, seriously, I don’t see what the whole argument here is all about. Matsui seems to be on the track that why the Creator only prefers names of ancient prophets, when none of them are from China??? I don’t understand what desibanda’s argument is. When I said that many people in Pakistan name their kids in Punjabi, Pashtu and Sindhi language, simply because they speak those languages… what were you then arguing?

Re: Naming a muslim child
faisal bhai, i am sorry if u felt offended by “bakwas” but i was frustrated that you were dodging my question and diverting the topic to indian hindus when i was only interested in talking abt desi (paki and indian) muslims.. but nevertheless i didnt realize that u wud take it to heart.. see i have nothing personal against you so u dont need to take my words seriously.. heat of the moment mein aise sab lafz aa jate hain iska matlab yeh nahin hai ke hum appko gaali de rahen hain.. at the end of the day we all go home as good friends.. anyways please see post #63 i agreed that i was wrong in assuming that paki ppl name their kids in arabic.. anyways i am surprised that u take my comments so seriously when so many others use worse language (some of it in unprintable words) and yet you dont seem to mind it.. is it because my stance is opposite yours??? anyways, i guess this is a very sensitive topic and it is not possible to have a meaningful discussion here as tempers are flying high everywhere..
Re: Naming a muslim child
I don't mind it. Its just disappointing.
Anyway, moving on... re: naming conventions ... so your point is....?
Re: Naming a muslim child
and why do you think i used the word moron??? the person in question repeatedly irritated me by calling me a multi-nicker (linking me to matsui).. ek do baar keh diya to mazaak hai phir baad mein it becomes annoying.. samjhane ke baad bhi woh janab manne ko tayyar nahin the to ghussa to aata hi hai aadmi ko..
Re: Naming a muslim child
acha bhai... sahi hai.. aagay chalo. or as they say in Urdu.. guftugu ko aagay barhaiyay. Do you still have an unanswered question, I can help with?
Re: Naming a muslim child
^ in karachi urdu they call it "double hai, jaanay day ustaad".
Re: Naming a muslim child
ji mera stand yeh hai ke people shud not have any biases in naming their kids.. so many people here were against naming their kids anything other than rahim, fahim, abdul and so on.. mera unse yehi argument tha ke app religion aur culture ko kyun confuse kar rahe ho?? a name like "ashok" is not a hindu name because it means "not sorrowful (meaning ever happy)" tau aise naam ke kya unislamic hai?? kissi ne ram kishan to rakhne ko nahin kaha tha... if u have names that are in ur language it makes u feel proud of ur people and ur culture.. think of actor johnny walker (he was muslim i know and it was only a pseudonym).. but when u dont know the person and just think of that name.. who do you expect to see? u think its a white.. some caucasian.. u dont expect to see a brown desi bearing that name.. names identify where u come from.. even ur name is very arabic.. i wud think that u are from jordan or uae unless u start talking to me in urdu.. so do u see my point here?.. of course dont mistake me as some culture-fanatic.. ppl shud be free to choose whatever name they want but they shud not discard other names solely on the basis of some misunderstanding or bias.. did i make myself clear now?
Re: Naming a muslim child
Your example of Johhny Walker is interesting. You have me intrigued now. Continuing on the same vein, so if a Khan sahab in Peshawar names his son Ashok, what do you think people will think regarding the ethnicity/culture/value/religion of the child, and why?
Help us understand your thought process.
Re: Naming a muslim child
do you doubt that sanjay khan is a muslim?? that's my answer.. besides a guy in peshwar will most prolly be a pashtun so he'd better name his son kurush khan or daryush ali or something.. he's got nothing to do with ashok..
Re: Naming a muslim child
^ Exactly! You answered your own question.
People name their kids with a name they are comfortable with. You are more likely to meet an Allah Ditta or Allah Rakhee in Punjab, and you are more likely to meet Rifle Khan in Peshawar :)
To many people, it really doesn't matter which language the name is from, as long as it sounds nice and has a good meaning. A friend of mine, who has no relation to Greeks (unlike Madhanee) at all, named his son Zarek, which is a Greek name. Apparently he read the name some place, liked it, and when he was blessed with a son, he named him Zarek Ali.
So, moral of the story, you are free to name your kids anyway YOU want. Khush?

Re: Naming a muslim child
uff faisal bhai jaan why do u have to miss my point by a mile always??? i say the same thing too.. my sore point has been with the desi obsession with anything arab.. not so much with what ppl name their kids.. i used the naming thing as an example for my argument and not as the basis… next thing u gonna come up with a census report from attock and show me how local (culturally relevant) the names there are..
Re: Naming a muslim child
Nothing has come out of this topic. Forget about given names, what about family names? Are there any Pirachas or Awan, or Dougars, or Kakayzais, or Bugtis, or Bhuttos, or Watoos, or Gondals or Noons (a very powerful name form where I come from, it is almost like Kennedy). So if we are ghayratmand (proud) enough to keep our Last names (family names) why do have to change our given names (or first names) to some Araboob crap?
We are not Arabs or Persians… we are Indians.
