Naming a muslim child

Assalam o alaikum,

Are there any hadith or verses from the Quran placing conditions on what sorts of names a muslim can have ?

As far as ive found, the only Hadith i have found on this matter is..

It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers’ names, so give yourselves good names.” (Hadith Abu Dawud)

That just goes to say that the name should have a good meaning ? According to that would a name like ‘Brooke’ for your daughter be ok ? Brooke means stream.

Re: Naming a muslim child

if u think names are only to be in Arabic than that's not the case..

They just have to be "Good".. so don't name u'r kid Asswip'e or something.. that won't be nice.

Re: Naming a muslim child

that much i figured out myself, but im just wondering if there are any more hadith about naming your kids..

Re: Naming a muslim child

I think there is a hadith about the names Allah(swt) likes the best, Abdu 'llah, Abd ar-Rahman, and the next best names are Haris and Humam . The worst names are Harb and Murrah (sp?).

Re: Naming a muslim child

Your daughter is going to have a hard time among desis and Mulsims when she will grow up. So why go through all that trouble. Just give her a nice Muslimah name.

Re: Naming a muslim child

i dont have a daughter yet :) i am just trying to understand the issue of naming. Yes i do realize the hard time amongst desi's and muslims thing but i wanna know the proper ruling on this matter.

Re: Naming a muslim child

why go for english names?? name her something in ur mother tongue.. why not something like nadiyah (meaning river) if u are punjabi..

Re: Naming a muslim child

brother desibanda, i just asked a valid question, i dont have a daughter, nor am i intent on naming any daughter i may have Brooke.

All i asked was a question which deserves a proper answer.

Re: Naming a muslim child

its better to have a name that shows ur muslim identity....

brooke is not a name that u'd commonly find among muslims....

u cud not blame others than if she was ever treated as a non-muslim....

Re: Naming a muslim child

AQ and ARM, My son has a Chinese muslim girl in his class… Her parents are from Nigxia province and her name is Ma Hongyang. Her mom is Ma Wei (a very devout Muslim). It is the stupid Araboob asslicking Salafi mentality that dictates that name be Araboobs. Maniac is absolutely right to name his/her daughter whatever he/she seems appropriate and with good meaning. It could be in any language. Get your head out of Arab ass. Thanks.

Re: Naming a muslim child

MY 3 Sons circumcised ghauri missiles alone will suffice for the Muslim Identity. Forget names.

Re: Naming a muslim child

Brother Verizon, How big is their faith? My boys are fairly religious too.

Re: Naming a muslim child

i guess as you move to new envioronments and assimilate gradually new names are increasingly acceptable. neha, danish, zeeshan, altamash, javed are all Muslim names now but are probably originating from non muslim persia / india.

so while it may be preferable to name your kid an 'Islamic' name (quranic/significant muslim figure) by association, I dont think its inherently worse than naming him javed.

she may encounter some identity problems though, just as the very first Muslim javeds might have.

Re: Naming a muslim child

Ravage how about Bobby, Lenny and Joey.

haha..

Re: Naming a muslim child

ok lets leave our boys missiles out of this verizon saab.....:) lol even the ultrasound techs giggled over this! I dont want them to get self-consious so lets go back to defcon 1 ok?

Honestly tho, I read and read about naming children because I want them to be raised in the Muslim traditions and the Koran says simply to name your children with a name that has a good meaning. So we did and they all have beautiful names with beautful meanings, funny thing is that they fit into the meaning of their name too (ie., adam of the earth is a very literal, down to earth boy, Alexander ("the great") is the protector of the family etc) Names mean much but limiting yourself to arabic names isnt necessary.

Re: Naming a muslim child

Mamaji, one of my boys is Alexandros. If we ever had a daughter, we were going to name her Electra. I love that name.

Shiekh Matsui, I like arabian horses with non-arabian names: Sunny side up.

Re: Naming a muslim child

anti arab racism is rampart in this thread....

nevertheless i think i got the answer i was looking for but i had to wade through a whole lot of bs to get it.

Re: Naming a muslim child

Maniac… name is not just a dogtag, it can have many psychological impacts later on in one’s life. It’s how one is referred to in the society (we have control over ourselves, but we don’t have control over society). Imagine a kid named Hitler in a NYC Public School? I had a friend in London, whose name was David Liftschitz (he was Gay, White, Jewish, South African – I think nothing gets worse than that combo in the 80s). So David legally changed his name to David Lifton.

Names should reflect a little bit of everything about a person, not only his religion, but also his heritage. I think, African Americans naming giving their kids Arabic names not only sounds stupid, but pretty tacky; imagine a Southern Baptist African American with a name Jamal Willi Berkstone. I mean come on.

So decide on your kids’ name with great care. My mom wanted to name my son Mosa (we went against it, because Mosa is a beautiful name if we lived in Pakistan or some Arab country, but in New York, it will be torturing a kid).
