The more the better in fact as long as they understand how america works. Pinstripe is right, you can be practicing Muslim or Hindu or Bhuddist in America or UK or Australia or whatever.

But if you plan on starting public beheadings or floggings or anything that would be harmful to the host government, its laws and people, then pack your bags and leave.

I think the above would constitute a VERY small minority of the usually peace loving expatriate Muslims around the world. So Stu, I wouldn’t pop that bottle just yet.

Anyone who tries to mix religion with politics has no place in America, it's one of the bigger threats to the country. Personally as far as U.S. politics are concerned the religious right Christians are more of a threat in doing this than Muslims.

ma mooli, i doubt personal law is what the aussies are referring to. most likely, it would be matters of criminal law.

in the end, its a choice between separation of state from religion vs. having laws for every religious background. the latter can get very very messy. india is probably the only country to carry it off half decently.

aussies seem to want clear separation of state from religion. their constitution proclaims the nation to be so. hence, if you would like to live under religious laws as per your belief, it would definitely not be your country. i dont see the racism there, it would in all likelihood be applicable if christians wanted to stone prostitutes or hindus wanted to burn widows.

Maybe “some” Aussies don’t want that, those “some” happen to be Muslims so what? Consitution is a man-made law, so if some men of the land want changes in it whats your problem?

Fact is that in some cases religious dogma is inconsistent and incompatible with secular law. The Pope says abortions violate scripture and that Roman Catholics cannot have them. In the US, where abortion is a matter of choice by secular law, Roman Catholics can abide by both scripture and secular law by simply choosing not to have abortions. Religious dogma and secular law are compatible.

In China, which enforces a one child policy through forced abortions and sterilization, religious dogma is incompatible with scripture. Roman Catholics living in China don't have the option of putting pre-eminence on scripture over law. If you don't like the China law, move out of China.

I'm sure there are parts of Sharia law that are not inconsistent with Australia's parliamentary law. As to those, no problem. But implementation of Sharia law as interpreted by radicals, in and of itself, is incompatible with democratic systems and institutions and the very concepts of man-made law. The challenge becomes one to the fundamental aspects of governance and the validity of the governing system itself. When you urge and incite actions that attack the underlying system itself, this is not free speach. It is called treason. Australia is inviting those who would advocate treason to leave or be locked up. The invitation to leave is pretty generous.

Western governments have put very little emphasis on prosecuting people under treason laws for a very long time. That's because treasonous talk was viewed as nothing more than "just talk" by a few nutballs and did not lead to dangerous action. Now we see that, at least, the islamic nutballs talking treason find other islamic nutballs to actually take action based upon the treasonous talk. Time to get tough.

wussi, why is this so difficult for you to understand? Secularism and democracy form the basis of the american governmental system. The validity of the system is the one thing that all americans (liberals, conservatives, democrats, republicans, libertarians, vegetarians and librarians) agree upon. Attacking these systems in favor of something else is treason. I agree completely w/what myvoice said above:

Aren't some of you missing the real point here? The Australians by this proclamation have clearly established the supremacy of their nationa's law over Sharia. So that there's no longer any clcowns that go around asking for exceptions under religious grounds.
