Re: Muslim states send condolences and aid to Pakistan
**MIDEAST PLEDGES AID TO PAKISTAN QUAKE VICTIMS **
Middle Eastern countries are sending monetary aid and rescue teams to Pakistan to help victims of last week’s earthquake. According to the latest reports, the death toll from the earthquake, which hit the Pakistani-Indian border on Saturday, may be as high as 50,000.
Iran sent a plane carrying 34 tons of relief goods to the area on Tuesday. The shipment included tents, blankets, mattresses, medicinal goods and food items. It also sent a 15-member rescue team with three sniffer dogs. A major earthquake hit the Iranian city of Bam in December 2003, killings tens of thousands.
Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have each donated $100 million for relief assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake. A UAE official said they sent a 26-member rescue team with sniffer dogs to help detect survivors who may be trapped under rubble.
Saudi Arabia announced a nationwide fundraising campaign to collect money for the quake victims in both Pakistan and India. Saudi’s King ‘Abdallah ordered the government to extend aid to Pakistan and the first relief plane left for Pakistan on Monday, loaded with 70 tons of food and relief items.
Jordan’s King ‘Abdallah ordered to dispatch a field hospital to Pakistan to help the victims. A team of 52 doctors, surgeons, nurses and other medics from the Royal Medical Services left for Pakistan on Tuesday. Earlier, Jordan sent two military cargo planes with rescue teams and relief aid.
Israeli Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom sent a letter to his Pakistani counterpart extending Israel’s condolences and said Israel is ready to help in any way possible. There has recently been a thaw in relations between Israel and Pakistan, an Islamic republic with a mainly Muslim population, after Israel withdrew troops and civilians from Gaza. The two foreign ministers met last month for the first time and made their meeting public. If Pakistan allows Israelis to enter the country it will be a sign that ties between the two are on a positive track.
