Muslim states send condolences and aid to Pakistan

Re: Muslim states send condolences and aid to Pakistan

If you checked through the thread you will see all the Muslim countries that have promised aid, are now actually delivering to Pakistan i.e. Turkey, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Egypt, Syria, Indondesia etc. Living abroad I have seen many Muslim communities donate to Pakistan, in fact very generous with their money.

Re: Muslim states send condolences and aid to Pakistan

I am not too optimistic about the future of the aid that is being given. The money will change many hands before it actually gets to the victims.. and who knows if they would get their fair share of that or not??? you see the general pattern of things in Pk has always been that the money disappears quietly after all the hype dies down and nobody ever questions. and that's why i believe in donating directly to the victims, its either them or no one. The people of Pk are very generous and have done their best to help the victims, but i don't want to see any idiot pocketing even a single peny from that money.

Re: Muslim states send condolences and aid to Pakistan

**MIDEAST PLEDGES AID TO PAKISTAN QUAKE VICTIMS **

Middle Eastern countries are sending monetary aid and rescue teams to Pakistan to help victims of last week’s earthquake. According to the latest reports, the death toll from the earthquake, which hit the Pakistani-Indian border on Saturday, may be as high as 50,000.

Iran sent a plane carrying 34 tons of relief goods to the area on Tuesday. The shipment included tents, blankets, mattresses, medicinal goods and food items. It also sent a 15-member rescue team with three sniffer dogs. A major earthquake hit the Iranian city of Bam in December 2003, killings tens of thousands.

Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have each donated $100 million for relief assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake. A UAE official said they sent a 26-member rescue team with sniffer dogs to help detect survivors who may be trapped under rubble.

Saudi Arabia announced a nationwide fundraising campaign to collect money for the quake victims in both Pakistan and India. Saudi’s King ‘Abdallah ordered the government to extend aid to Pakistan and the first relief plane left for Pakistan on Monday, loaded with 70 tons of food and relief items.

Jordan’s King ‘Abdallah ordered to dispatch a field hospital to Pakistan to help the victims. A team of 52 doctors, surgeons, nurses and other medics from the Royal Medical Services left for Pakistan on Tuesday. Earlier, Jordan sent two military cargo planes with rescue teams and relief aid.

Israeli Foreign Minister Sylvan Shalom sent a letter to his Pakistani counterpart extending Israel’s condolences and said Israel is ready to help in any way possible. There has recently been a thaw in relations between Israel and Pakistan, an Islamic republic with a mainly Muslim population, after Israel withdrew troops and civilians from Gaza. The two foreign ministers met last month for the first time and made their meeting public. If Pakistan allows Israelis to enter the country it will be a sign that ties between the two are on a positive track.

**Turkish Cypriot team heads to Pakistan **

A GROUP of 21 Turkish Cypriots left the island to join the global rescue effort to save victims of the Pakistani earthquake yesterday. The group, including three doctors, six nurses and 12 members of the north’s civil defence team specialising in search and rescue operations, would also be taking along “large amounts” of medication plus 2,500 blankets, the north’s ‘health minister’ Esref Faiz said yesterday. They were due to leave yesterday aboard a jet provided by the north’s main carrier Cyprus Turkish Airlines (CTA), which Faiz said would possibly fly directly into Pakistan. Sending the team, Faiz said, was an expression for of sympathy for the Pakistani people in their time of need. Head of the north’s civil defence team Ilhan Birol said yesterday the search and rescue team would be taking along listening equipment and heat sensitive cameras. They would also be accompanied by a building engineer specialising in earthquake damage, he said.

Mercy team gets to work

The first rescue team of Mercy Malaysia reached Islamabad in Pakistan at 1pm yesterday. The team, comprising four medical and three logistics officers, will later leave for Muzaffarabad where tens of thousands of people were hit by the massive weekend earthquake, said its chief operating officer Shareen Shariza Datuk Abdul Ghani. “They will set up a base at the affected area where aid is needed most. We will send more than 80 volunteers to help,‘’ she said. She said Mercy Malaysia emergency medical relief and rapid assessment teams could be expected to be in Pakistan for at least six weeks. “We need to have at least RM1mil in the emergency phase to purchase medical supplies, hygiene items, food and drinking water as well as relief items such as winter blankets, winterised tents and sleeping bags,” she added. Shareen appealed to the public to donate only cash which could be used to buy medicine and necessary items. She also appealed to orthopaedic surgeons, general surgeons, trauma specialists, emergency medical teams and nurses to volunteer. “The impact of the disaster is immense so we hope more volunteers will come,‘’ she said. In another development, Mercy Malaysia will send a second mission team to Pakistan following their first deployment two days ago.

The eight-member team comprises three orthopaedic surgeons, a paediatric surgeon, an anaesthetist, a nurse and two logisticians – all of whom have either served in previous Mercy Malaysia’s missions in crisis areas or are specialists in their fields. Dr Ahmad Faizal Perdaus, Mercy Malaysia exco member in charge of the South Asia Earthquake Relief, said the second deployment was because the situation in Pakistan was “very bad” and there were many areas to cover. Meanwhile, slight tremors were felt in Penang when an earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale hit the west coast of Sumatra at 11.05pm yesterday. The epicentre of earthquake was 176km from Bandar Acheh and 866km from west of Kuala Lumpur. Orissa Muslims pray for their relatives in Pakistan

Separated by a border and 58 years of partition but inextricably linked by strong family ties, scores of families here fearfully watch footage of quake hit areas on Pakistan Television (PTV) for some news of their relatives. Like M.H. Rahman, 30, of Fakirabad village near Kendrapada who is glued to the television watching PTV as well as other news channels as details of the Oct 8 tremors that killed about 24,000 people in Pakistan and 1,300 in India pour in. His grandfather, Mirza Aishar Beg, has been in Pakistan since 1948 and the intervening years have not dulled the familial spark. “Every gory footage of the devastation on TV leaves my heart pounding in fear and anxiety,” Rahman told IANS. “My grandfather’s family is staying in a town 45 km from Muzaffarabad (in Pakistan administered Kashmir) for more than five decades. I have been unable to speak to any of them since the day the earthquake struck in Pakistan,” he said. The ties have just recently been reinforced. Rahman had visited Pakistan for three months last year. “Last year, I had visited Pakistan and stayed for three months with my grandfather and other relatives. Now, we can only pray for their safety.”

There are at least 75 other families like Rahman’s in the area whose relatives moved to Pakistan at the time of partition in 1947. In this holy month of Ramzan, special prayers are being held in mosques in the district to pray for the victims of the disaster. Many have been running from pillar to post hoping for some information about their families in Pakistan after the massive earthquake. Abuta from Dilarpur village, for instance, is anxious for news about his aunt Tahera Khatun who lives near the Pakistan capital Islamabad. The Eid fervour has been dampened. Said the 58-year-old: “I came to know from my son about Saturday’s 7.6 quake that struck Pakistan. I am frantically trying to know the whereabouts of my mother’s sister and her family members. This is the holy month of Ramzan. The disaster has shattered our hopes for a happy Eid.” The scenes of devastation unfolding on TV has made people nervous. Telephone lines can perhaps restore their confidence - and faith that all is well with their families on the other side of the border.

UAE to construct 100 to 200 bed hospital in Muzaffarabad

By Hanif Khalid

The UAE government has announced to construct a hospital in Muzaffarabad with its own funds within three months. The construction work will start next month and this medical complex will start functioning in February 2006. The construction will be quake proof. The hospital in the Azad Jummu Kashmir capital will have 100 to 200 beds. The consultation, engineering, architectural and other spadework for the construction has been started on war footings. On behalf of the United Arab Emirates President, UAE Envoy Dr Ali Mohammad Al-Shamshi made this announcement on Friday while talking to The News. He further said that the hospital will be equipped with operation theatres, laboratories and houses for the doctors and nurses. “Our president, who treat Pakistan as his second home, has decided to equip this hospital with the state of the art medical machinery and equipment,” the envoy said.

He said while the international community is planning to start the construction work within six months in Pakistan, my government has decided to start constructing houses for the devastated people of 11 districts of NWFP and Azad Kashmir and buildings for educational institutions next month. For the construction work we have earmarked $100 million. Dr Shamshi went on to say that Inshaullah the UAE would be the first country to handover free homes to the affected people through the government of Pakistan.

10 Saudi relief flights reaching Pakistan daily

The number of daily royal Saudi flights, carrying relief goods for the earthquake victims, which are landing in Pakistan, has gone up to ten. Saudi Ambassador Ali Awadh Asseri has thanked the leadership and the government of Pakistan for having allowed the increased number of flights from Saudi Arabia in spite of immense congestion at Islamabad airport because of the relief goods arriving from other countries. The diplomat said that subject to availability of space at the airport, the number of flights could increase even further. As a matter of fact, this had been the desire of the Saudi authorities from the very beginning, but it could not be fulfilled because of non-availability of landing space at Islamabad airport.

Asseri said the state-of-the-art Saudi Field Hospital had been despatched to Mansehra along with doctors, nurses and other personnel. He hoped that the hospital would become operational in the next couple of days to bring medical relief to the earthquake victims.
