**Bahrain boosts quake aid **
BAHRAIN is to send relief aid worth $3 million (BD1.1m) to earthquake victims in Pakistan. The move was announced yesterday by Deputy Premier and Islamic Affairs Minister Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalid Al Khalifa, who is also president of the Bahrain Red Crescent Society (BRCS). He made the announcement while inspecting the first consignment of aid at Bahrain airport, before it was sent to Islamabad, Pakistan. Two plane-loads of relief goods, weighing 85 tonnes, were sent yesterday by two DHL aircraft. Shaikh Abdulla was at the airport along with other BRCS officials, Pakistani Ambassador Iftikhar Hussain Kazmi, other embassy officials and leaders of the Pakistani community. Shaikh Abdulla thanked Bahrain’s leaders and people for allocating a generous gift of $3m for the earthquake victims. The consignment sent yesterday was valued at nearly $1m (BD378,000), said BRCS secretary general Sadiq Al Shehabi.
The decision to send aid was taken at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, on October 9. Consignments included tents, beds, blankets, bed sheets, generators , surgical and other medical aid, as well as food items, such as biscuits. “Two more planes carrying relief goods will leave for Islamabad in 72 hours,” Mr Al Shehabi told the GDN. “The next consignment will carry heaters, along with other items, as people in the earthquake-affected areas are suffering from extreme cold weather.” The aid package was put together after talks with Pakistani Embassy officials over what was needed most. Two BRCS volunteers, Abdulnabi Ahmed and Mohammed Busamra, accompanied the shipment. They will hand it over to officials of the Bahrain Embassy in Islamabad, who will then present it to the Pakistani Red Crescent Society.

**Gulf Air set to fly more relief **
The airline has already sent 4,000 blankets for people left homeless by the earthquake. Gulf Air Cargo will also be offering free transport for any relief cargo to be sent from any of its points in its network to all the affected parts in Pakistan, namely Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad, and Karachi, said Gulf Air vice-president business units Ali Murtada. “We are offering this service to all embassies, non-governmental organisations and socio-religious associations, who would like to contribute essential commodities to the affected region in Pakistan,” he added. "Till date more than 50 tonnes have been flown into Pakistan by Gulf Air Cargo. “We were overwhelmed by the amount of relief cargo that has been offered by various sources. We are flying it to critical parts of Pakistan where it is needed the most.” Critical rations like food and water, clothes and warm clothes have to be air dropped in Pakistan as most of the access roads have been destroyed or damaged beyond repair, said Mr Murtada. “Gulf Air would like to show solidarity with the people affected by this great tragedy by contributing to the cause by handling a part of the logistics of getting the relief cargo to Pakistan,” said president and chief executive James Hogan. "It is at these times of need that we need to come together and contribute to a common cause. “We are ready to go the extra mile to help out all the agencies contributing to the relief effort in Pakistan.”

More aid from Malaysia.
Malaysia pledges $US1 million in extra relief for Pakistan
Malaysia has pledged $US1 million towards Pakistan’s earthquake relief effort, saying it was vital to help homeless victims before winter arrives. Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said: “More than two weeks since the massive earthquake struck South Asia, the scale of the disaster continues to shock and sadden us”. “The world community has to respond on an urgent basis. We must do what we can to help the earthquake survivors cope with the onset of winter,” he said. The UN says key emergency aid operations for Pakistani earthquake survivors are still vastly underfunded, despite new promises of $US500 million from donor nations. Mr Syed Hamid says its financial contribution will be supplemented with blankets, tents, food and medicines and volunteers to carry out relief activities in the worst-affected areas of Pakistan.
**Malaysia is the current chair of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the world’s biggest Muslim grouping, which has already given $US523 million and other aid to victims of the October 8 quake. “Obviously, for operations of such nature, we need to do more,” he said. **
