Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

Musharraf: “we have our own brains.”

I really wish he had one!

DAVOS, Switzerland (CNN) – Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf lashed out Thursday at what he called Western “intellectual arrogance” toward his country, angrily dismissing claims that rising unpopularity has undermined his authority.

He also dismissed allegations that he cannot be trusted to hold free and fair elections as “totally absurd.”
Musharraf, who was forced to impose a state of emergency last year to quell violent protests but failed to prevent the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, sought to defend his embattled leadership and record in combating terrorism.
“The mandate has been given. Why doesn’t the West, which is supposed to be civilized, understand things?” Musharraf told CNN in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“Why doesn’t it understand that we maybe are a developing country, we have our flaws, we believe in constitution, we know how to run government, we are not such clueless people who do not know how to run a country, we have our own brains.”
He added, “Unfortunately there is a degree of, may I say, intellectual arrogance that I see in the West which thinks that these developing countries are some kind of people who do not know how to govern, they do not know anything.”
Musharraf has been accused by Western critics and his political opponents of rolling back democracy in Pakistan in an effort to maintain power.

Musharraf](http://topics.cnn.com/topics/pervez_musharraf), who seized power in a 1999 military coup and resisted pressure to quit his military role until late last year, said polls that predicted a major blow to his ruling Pakistan Muslim League Party on February 18 were baseless.
He also rejected claims by Bhutto](http://topics.cnn.com/topics/benazir_bhutto)'s Pakistan People’s Party that the elections will be rigged, an accusation leveled at the previous votes Musharraf used to prolong his period of rule.
His landslide win in October 2007 faced a constitutional challenge by a judiciary he subsequently dismissed as he imposed the emergency rule amid violent protests.
“This [election rigging allegation] is the culture that [Bhutto’s supporters] have been following themselves always,” he said.
“But this is the culture that I have changed. The bugs that were there in the system have been removed. By who? By me, by my government. We removed the bugs.”
He rejected charges that he quelled democratic movements by dismissing the judiciary and cracking down on some media outlets, saying there were “four or five personalities who actually were inciting the people of Pakistan to agitation.”
“We cannot have this,” he said.
Musharraf said the brief closure of TV broadcasters during emergency rule, which was lifted December 13, was a necessary move.
“I closed them down for a few days because they were, No. 1, inciting agitation – some of them; No. 2, they were not showing responsibility toward terrorism and extremism.”
The president, whose security forces are often accused of colluding with militant elements in Pakistan](http://topics.cnn.com/topics/pakistan), defended his record on tackling terrorism but insisted he was not working for the West, despite close alliance with Washington.
"The misperception is that I’m doing something for the United States or the West, we are fighting for Pakistan and the West must know that success or failure in Pakistan will have an impact on the streets of Europe.
“Do not create such misconception that we are backtracking, we are following a multi-pronged strategy: military, political, socio-economic. And we are doing very well.”

Thanks for sharing Lusi. Denial is the first stage of disaster, and this man just will not stop denying anything that's negative towards him. Maybe it is the Military mentality, who knows. :)

not well timed at all

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

Oh whatever, why criticize him? Look and see who's reporting and the biases that come with it (EDIT)

Whatever. Back to the real world. When the West wanted him to look good, he looked dam* good. Fyne, in fact. He looked so good that all the girls wanted to just eat him up, he was so yummy. The teenagers liked him, the punk rockers liked him, the gay fashion designers liked him, ammi abu pinky and lalu bhai liked him.

You know why? Because the same CNN and other media reporters were raving about him.

Reality: American policy is changed. Mush is not letting American soldiers enter into Pakistan, and is fighting to keep Balochistan and NWFP as part of Pakistan. American policy change --> media is singing a different tune. Its the same musharraf, with the same speeches he's been giving for the past decade. I saw him - with all the media reporters. And he was pleading for them to be objective in their reporting. And I saw the reporters; they had their questions triggered to make him look bad.

Regardless of what he says - things get snipped and shifted around and voila - a CNN article that makes him look like a blabbering idiot.

And voila - a Pakistani public that is now against him. If America wants him out and another puppet to enter the scene - great - you guys did an EXCELLENT job of helping us Americans accomplish that. Its only a matter of time until we find a good replacement. God darnit that babbling idiot of a Benazir got shot. Had to stick her thopra out of the car...

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

Under the circumstances, getting angry is hardly gonna help. What you need is a cool-headed statesman.

When the President of the country fires the top judiciary, gags the media, arrests hundred and thousands of lawyers and civilians for protesting - and then claim that we have our constitution and we have brains... oh well, the word "irony" doesn't even begin to describe it.

Welcome to Banana Republic of Pakistan.

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

^ I agree. He should have spent that time and energy getting 'em terrorists.

Laikin...when he does do that (ex. waziristan)...uh, remind me how many Pakistanis think he's committing a genocide for his own personal enjoyment, and how many Pakistanis think "There's no Taleban out there - they're making it all up".

?

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

I think this whole terrorists in Waziristan is a classic chicken and egg scenario. Don't have time to explain right now. Will do so tomorrow, if needed. Sweet dreams! :)

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

What a low and lame way to point out someone when infact you cannot even get your message across constructively. Anywhoooo...I will not stoop to your level and call you out like that. Speaks volumes about one's character. Please don't EVER use my name in any of your posts without my permission. I never use yours either. My posts are all there for others to read, they don't need you to interpret for them. Thanks

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

At least the guy has some grapefruits!

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

lol..ofcourse we have them...using them is bit difficult tough:p

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

Im sure they are being used aplenty!

my point is at least we aint taking it lying down. Even if it is just for a public keeping of face!!!

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

Dont say that ever again!!! Living in the States raving and ranting such slogans is pretty easy. Especially when you have contributed nothing to your country yourself. So please refraim from such comments in future.
Whatever the circumstances might be. Thank you!

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

Nothing personal... But most people in living outside the States have contributed to the country. The country has been riding on the backs of expatriot money... We help the country in substantial ways just by sending home money...

And many Pakistanis living abroad would contribute more if the atmosphere conducive to such investment.

And do you really blame people for being cynics?

Re: Musharraf to West: 'We have our own brains'

I dont like this attitude at all. Sending money home might be a help, but in first place to help their owns. Their is no intension to benefit the country. My defintion of "contribution to your country": When you do have a business or you do work their. Fine! IF you are a tax payer. Fine! IF you have been there occasionally and spent some money over there. Fine!

Pakistan is our country. No matter how dirty, smelly, politicially unstable etc It is. BUt finally It is our country and we should think at least 100 times before stating such things. They do break my heart. And I mean It!
I wouldnt mind this to be stated by some Indian (but I would argue on this too) but I rather not expect that from any Pakistani (expat, foreign citizen). Especially not from some one, who makes more sense when posting.
