** Pakistan warns against unilateral action on rebels**

By Sanjeev Miglani 1 hour, 41 minutes ago

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said any unilateral action by U.S.-led coalition forces against militants in the border region with Afghanistan will be regarded as an invasion, a newspaper reported on Friday.

Musharraf told Singapore’s The Straits Times that Islamabad will resist any entry by coalition forces in the tribal areas to hunt down Islamic militants, regarding that as a breach of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

“I challenge anybody coming into our mountains. They would regret the day,” he told the newspaper in an interview conducted in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Musharraf also told the newspaper he would resign if a government that emerged from elections, now scheduled for next month, sought his impeachment.

Pakistan has been under pressure from Washington to stamp out al Qaeda and pro-Taliban militants U.S. officials believe are hiding in remote regions along the border with Afghanistan and fomenting violence there.

The New York Times said earlier this month the U.S. government was considering expanding the authority of the CIA and the military to conduct aggressive covert operations in Pakistan.

Pakistan officials dismissed the report at the time and said Islamabad would not permit any such action.

Musharraf also criticized U.S. Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s proposal to deploy a U.S., and possibly a British, team to safeguard Pakistan’s nuclear assets.

Her statement, Musharraf said, was an “intrusion into our privacy, into our sensitivity … She doesn’t seem to understand how well-guarded these assets are.”

International concern about the safety of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons has been increasing, and earlier this week, Mohamed Elbaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, was quoted as saying he feared the nuclear arsenal could pass into the hands of extremists.

Musharraf is also under fire at home.

The Pakistan People’s Party led by Benazir Bhutto until her assassination last month has been attacking him over her killing while Nawaz Sharif, another former premier, has demanded his immediate resignation and the formation of an all-party government to conduct free and fair elections.

**“If impeachment were their intention and they don’t want to go along in a harmonious manner, I would like to quit the scene,” Musharraf said when asked what would happen if Bhutto’s party emerged a winner in the elections and mounted a bid to oust him with the support of Sharif’s party.

“If that happens, let me assure you that I would be leaving office before they would do anything.”**

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

A corrupt nation deserves a corrupt leader, Mushraff is not suited for the job anyway. Mushraff is a blessing for Pakistan, only if people could comprehend it. Ignorance is not always a bliss.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

Than we'll see what will happen to judges and free media who go against zardari or the sharifs. Phir maza aay ga.

Re: Musharraf says he’ll resign

He is a true leader, May Allah bless him. What he got for rulling Pakistan, death threats. I remember his interview in which he says “he don’t care about his life but these butchers aka terrorists will not spare his family too”…

He will always be remember and people will line up for protecting his life.. :jhanda:

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

Well it's about time.I have been his ardant supporter, but the net around him is getting tight and he has not much options left and to leave in a decent manner. I know he wished nothing but good for Pakistan.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

Same here. I used to be proud of his policies and everything until he lost it all and started cracking down on the civilians, lawyers, and such.....
Somewhere along the way the agenda of Pakistan was lost in the midst of other affairs. :(

sigh

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

Nothing new. Prez. Musharraf has said that all along.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

When Musharraf is out of power, Pakistan will get its ass handed to it from all sides.

Then people will proclaim: "This is the doing of that evil dictator..."

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

Mush's not man of his words, i wont believe.

Re: Musharraf says he’ll resign

Nice invitation to his real fathers.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

So lets see if "will based democrats" and "Mill based democrats" can bring the impeachment motion :)

Re: Musharraf says he’ll resign

haha, mill based…good one.

Kiyani is coming, hide your jihadis at home!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/06/AR2008010602262.html

The administration is hopeful that Pakistan’s new army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kiyani, will support more robust efforts involving U.S. intelligence and military operatives targeting al-Qaeda’s terrorist sanctuaries in the country, the officials said.

“Kiyani has a strong recognition that things haven’t worked,” said one senior military official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic. “He recognizes the level of competence and proficiency” of Pakistan’s forces “will need attention.”

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

First smart thing he has said in a long while... What should he expect after an entire 8 years spent breeding resentment.

Hopefully with Mush's loss we will have our supreme court and CJ brought back to their rightful position.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

and when we get bankrupted and turn into a failed state again, chief justice will probably come back and torture the country, new lal masjids will be created everywhere, maza hi maza aay ga

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

I hope he is impeached, arrested, charged, face trial for treason. That is the only thing that will discouraged future military coups in the country.

Re: Musharraf says he’ll resign

Poor Musharraf, too late for him to change his tune now.

I agree now he sounds more like a leader of a nation much to the chagrin of lovers of fascism and Pakistan-is-terror-central-and-Bush-is-our-lord crowd here on gupshup and the tiny corrupt yes-men courtiers which have brought this country to its darkest hour in it’s entire history, maligned its name, divided the nation and justified murder.

Musharraf like all other of our ill begotten custodians does not think of himself as a traitor (who does?). In addition to his poor judgments, paper tiger disposition I think he can also blame his courtiers who espoused fascism, playing the labeling game, dividing the nation and making Pakistan a proxy to an immoral war and surrendering Pakistan’s many moral high grounds which the nation had held for a very long time.

In the end he’ll be despised as the worst dictator in Pakistan and his almost 9 year charade of a rule Pakistan’s darkest hours. I feel sorry for him, but have no sympathy for his courtiers.

Please depart now Musharraf, leave us be, and perhaps you might only be villified to a softer extent. May God have mercy on you.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

you forget to mention one more thing, while gov changed and your lovely qazi or immi takeover the sc will be part of Taliban and the flag on top of it is jihadistan not Pakistan. If ex-cj iftikhar wanna come back he have to had beard, so better email him to stop shaving.

Re: Musharraf says he’ll resign

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

CJ will help keep the system functioning... I think your exagerating the threat... Mush is certainly not the one thats keeping the Taliban from taking over the SC. Nor is Mush preventing Pak from turning into Jihadistan.

Things will be fine and at the very least, we wont have potests and civil unrest that Mush has created. Army will be free to fight terrorists while politicians can look after politics.
If Pakistanis get tired of it all, they can vote the govt out once its finished with its tenure.

Re: Musharraf says he'll resign

I really hope Musharraf is made an example out of, so that no other military chief ever dares impose a coup and stay on for 10-20 years like the nudnicks zia and musharraf
