He did. He had more than four. So no matter what, he is an exception. Though he was human, he was an exceptional one. Perhaps the same rules did not apply to him.

^Like I said, it's sort of a progression -- a statement of a theoretical allowance and an explanation for why it can't be.
I mean, why were Adam and Eve allowed to live in Paradise at all when before their creation Allah SWT said he was going to place mankind on Earth?

afridi....the 4 wives rule is not just limited to the prophet (SAW). men are allowed 4 wives in islam. however it is not advisable (according to scholars)since ordinary men like yourself are likely to favor one wife over the other. this is human nature. if you dont treat them equally...there is a huge (not an exaggeration) punishment for it. so why would men want to take such a risk? it's not that simple to marry more then 1 wife as some men think.
this is all those 2 verses are stating.....it's not a contradiction. simply states that you are allowed upto 4 wives however if u fear that you might not be able 2 treat them just.....which is likely...then 1 is best. for you.

You are right sister.. but some men can pull it off. The notable examples are Bollywood celebrities like Javed Akhtar(Shabana Azmi's husband), Saleem Khan(Salman Khan's dad).. I know a lot of ppl back in Pakistan that have done this peacefully- infact the trend is upward if you come to my town- Sialkot.. My dad's close buddy also is married to 3 ladies for 20 years or so and he gives 2 nights to each lady- very fair..
You got upset at me earlier but can I take liberty to ask one small question? Why are you so opposed to sharing your husband with some other ladies? Are you afraid they'll snatch your hubby from you? If you were to land up in such a situation which is 100% islamic (that is you are one of many wives if you marry arab its common for example)- how would ya tackle it? I am just curious..
