Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

February 20, 2008

Mumbai entered the fray in the second round of bidding, picking up Sanath Jayasuriya for US$975,000 (his base price was US$250,000) and Harbhajan Singh for US$850,000 (base price US$250,000).

It means Sachin Tendulkar has become the second player after MS Dhoni to cross the million-dollar mark. As an icon he will stand to earn 15% more than the most paid player in the franchise (Jayasuriya) - which translates to US$ 1.12 million.

The other players who were picked in the second round of bidding were: Anil Kumble by Bangalore for US$500,000 (base price: US$250,000) and Kumar Sangakkara by Mohali for US$700,000 (base price: US$250,000). So Sanga joins his friend and national captain Mahela Jayawardene - and their former coach Tom Moody.

Glenn McGrath and Mohammad Yousuf haven’t found any takers so far, so they have gone into the reserve pool and will be picked later.

Everyone’s now broken for lunch, back at 13-35 p.m.

Squads as of now:

Jaipur Shane Warne (US$ 450,000)

Chennai MS Dhoni (US$ 1.5 million), Muttiah Muralitharan (US$ 600,00)

Mumbai Sachin Tendulkar (icon), Sanath Jayasuriya (US$ 975,000), Harbhajan Singh (US$ 850,000)

Bangalore Rahul Dravid (icon), Anil Kumble (US$ 500,000)

Hyderabad Adam Gilchrist (US$ 700,000)

Mohali Yuvraj Singh (icon), Mahela Jayawardene (US$ 475,000), Kumar Sangakkara (US$ 700,000)

Kolkata Sourav Ganguly (icon), Shoaib Akhtar (US$ 425,000)

Delhi Virender Sehwag (icon)

"....Soon, the first name will be announced, along with the base price. Then, the first paddle will go up with a figure marked on it. The next paddle will follow soon, from another table.

And so the bidding or the first cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League, from a pool of about 78 of them, will begin.

On offer, for a price, are some of the world's finest cricketers, from Ricky Ponting to Shaun Pollock, Chris Gayle to Shoaib Akhtar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni to Muttiah Muralitharan. Eager to buy them are some of India's biggest corporate names, from United Spirits to Reliance Industries, and a couple of the country's brightest faces - Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and leading lady Preity Zinta.

Steered by veteran auctioneer Richard Madley, the "open bidding" will take place behind closed doors inside the Regal Room at the Hilton Towers. About six representatives from each of the eight teams will be seated around separate tables with computer screens to track the action.

Cellphones will be off, and as the tension rises with every paddle, watching the various gameplans unfold could well be former Indian captains Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, icon players for Bangalore and Kolkata, this time taking guard as team advisors. The IPL's organisers expect Ganguly and Dravid to be present at the auction, while three other icon stars - Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai), Yuvraj Singh (Mohali) and new member Virender Sehwag (Delhi) - will track the action from Australia.

All eyes, though, will be on the money, with bids for top stars set to go into seven figures. "You can expect at least one player, say Adam Gilchrist or Dhoni, to breach the US$1 million mark, which is nearly triple their base price of around $400,000," the CEO of a franchise who will be present at the auction, told Cricinfo. "That is the top bracket. But with eight teams coming to the table with $5 million each, there will be quite some money floating around in that room tomorrow...."

Prepearing for Ashes ...

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

Mohammad Yousuf and Ashwell Prince were the two players who were withdrawn from the auction as they didn't attract any bids. Of the 79 players, 77 players were sold at the base price or above.

that must have been embarrassing

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

dont know what happened with Ashwell Prince. As far as Yousuf goes, here is his story

Yousuf blocked from Indian Premier League

Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan batsman, may not be available for the Indian Premier League’s auction on Wednesday because of a legal complication. Lawyers for the Indian Cricket League (ICL) have, in a letter to the owners of the IPL’s eight franchises, said Yousuf’s legal status is currently the subject of arbitration, under which his participation in the IPL has been stayed.

“Mohammad Yousuf cannot participate in the tournament organised by the IPL or any other tournament organised by any other league in direct competition with the Indian Cricket League,” ALMT, the lawyers representing the ICL, said in the letter. “Such participation would amount to breach of the order and our client reserve their right to take such other legal recourse against all parties concerned.”

Yousuf initially signed up with the ICL after being dropped from Pakistan’s squad for the World Twenty20 last September. Soon after, however, he was convinced by the PCB to turn his back on the ICL, represent Pakistan and also sign up with the IPL, the rival tournament officially sanctioned by the BCCI.

The matter went into arbitration where Yousuf’s lawyer, Tafuzzal Rizvi, argued he had “no contract” with the ICL as the money [paid to Yousuf] was “received back by the ICL without any objection”. However the presiding judge passed an order on December 15, 2007, restraining Yousuf from appearing in the IPL or any league rivalling the ICL, and to maintain status quo till further orders.

Wednesday’s high-profile auction in Mumbai will see the eight franchises bid for 80-odd players, including several top internationals. Yousuf’s name is included in the IPL’s roster but whether it will be there on Wednesday morning is a moot point.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

Yousuf Pathan more valuable than the likes of Hayden, Hussey, Fleming? Joginder holds the same value as Younis? Gul, who is a far better Twenty20 bowler than Asif, being paid 1/3 the amount? This is a joke, right? When you have dumb bimbos like Preity Zinta as "bidders", what else can you expect really.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

^ Yes...the entire list is at Cricinfo...and it seems weird to me that two-bit players like Manoj Tiwary, Suresh Raina, Joginder Sharma etc are commanding more price than Michael Hussey, Ponting, McGrath etc

There has to be something more to it.

Could it be that having Indian names will attract more local support etc....

I think I am missing something..still quite confused on this whole bidding affair.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

Yes, I was aware, serves him right for almost leaving the national team to join ICL for money. Who would want him after that...

Also the bids seem strange, my only guess is that all owners thought those top players would be heavily fought for, so they decided to focus on others. But it seems like the SRK group fought heavily for Ishant Sharma, no doubt ganguly was involved as he has praised him publicly quite recently.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

Owners of the organization were not necessarily bidding on the teams. They have claimed publicly that they are not qualified, so they were getting help from their captain and more qualified people (whatever that means).

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

I think that is the main reason.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

^ Yes…and it turns out ‘the Game’ is right…This is utter nonsense…

Be Indian, buy Indian

What began with a computer systems failure ended in the biggest bull run in the history of cricket. If there was any doubt that the Indian Premier League could break the mould for the way cricket is run in this country, evidence came on a frenetic Wednesday.

Apart from creating half a dozen millionaires, the IPL seamlessly merged Bollywood and cricket, with the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta deciding just how much the Ricky Pontings and Stephen Flemings of the world were worth.

The verdict was unanimous — be Indian, buy Indian. In a trend that is sure to startle even those who have been tracking this business closely, and anger some Australian cricketers, India’s cricketers lapped up the lion’s share of the money that was spent. It defied cricketing logic that Yusuf Pathan was sold for more than Ponting, that someone like Ishant Sharma, the flavour of the day but very much a greenhorn still, came in at close to a million dollars.

It was also a day when it was next to impossible to predict trends. This was one hell of a free market. With Richard Madley often calling out figures and ending them in pounds, rather than dollars, but otherwise conducting the auction impeccably, it was a day that no one who was present would forget.
The auction began rather typically, with a delay of almost an hour, but for once, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was faultless. It was ready well in time but the Mohali signatory did not show up on time, and the auction almost began before he could show up.

Lalit Modi, in turns headmasterly with both the participants in the auction and the impatient media outside, handed the Mohali man a two-minute deadline to make it into the auction room. Fortunately, a brief systems failure with the computers in the auction room gave him the time he needed to get settled.
Once things got going, though, an auction of three parts ensued. Contrary to popular logic, it was not always to be high up in the order. It certainly helped that Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who benefitted from some serious action between Mumbai, Mohali and eventual winners Chennai, who forked out a day-high 1.5 million dollars (Rs 6 crore) for him.

Some of the other early starters weren’t quite so lucky, prominent among them the Australians, as the franchisees held back their purse strings, waiting to see what else was on offer.

Mumbai was a particularly difficult group to gauge, a source within
the auction revealed, for they seemed not to bid at all for certain lots and then jumped in to snatch only the players they genuinely wanted. Some other franchisees, Jaipur for example, seemed random in their choices, and even failed to understand the rules of the game, ending up short of spending the floor amount of $3.3 million.

An argument ensued and once more, Modi had to step in and sort things out. When the Jaipur representative claimed they had not been told about having to spend the floor price, the authorities were left with no choice but to insist that they pay the difference, between $500,000 and $700,000, a source revealed, to the IPL.

But these were minor glitches on a day when cricketers celebrated the biggest pay packages of their lives. At the end of it all, Lalit Modi, whose baby this IPL project is, was a tired but very contented man.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

seems like Symonds well-timed his annoucement of not to tour Pakistan. Knowing that he could be available for the enitre IPL season, Hyderabad rewarded him well.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

will be interesting to see Hyderabad team in action. In full flow the combination of Symonds, Afridi, Gibbs, and Gilchrist can definitely shake any bowling attack.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

I have never seen anything more ridiculous than this IPL bidding and what players are getting in last 17 years of following cricket......this is joke to people/players who followed/played cricket for cricket and not for $$.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

all the Australians must be disappointed, well except symonds of course

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

This league will flop. It is a one time circus and once initial excitement fades, people will realise that you can't watch cricket unless you actually know who you are going for.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

Well the controversy that symonds got into because of monkey word has helped him. You guys realise that the bidders took into account not the cricketing talent but to see who will drive more crowd to watch the match. Obviously they dont care if Ricky Ponting is a good player or Symonds but they know that if symonds and harbhajan come together on the ground, its going to be more drama, more crowd and hence better revenues for Advertisers.

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

What is this? 1,5 for Dhoni and 450-600 for Shane Warne a like and Murlies? Lol!

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

Well the prices are not based on their performance nor are they rewards for their services to the cricket. its pure horse trade, and more famous horse fetches higher price. let the people spend their cash based on thier "knowledge". i am sure by the next auction they will learn to bid more sensibly.
