Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
with no past trends or data there can be no basis to select players....also this is a 20-20 series not a 50 over ODI....

Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
i forgot about the 4 foreign player rule, makes sense now
"One of the reasons that the Indian players went for such a huge price is because of the structure of the IPL," the liquor baron said.
"You could have only four foreign player playing on the field at one time, so obviously every franchise has to have a large number of Indian players, who were in short supply because even if you take the entire Indian squad and add others among the eight franchises obviously each one of them was very, very valuable.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
Has this person been considered or is he in the reserevs list?
Has he complained about not being considered ?
If he hasn’t than he may be happy in his new career.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
^ What he does or doesn't do is his business at least after his retirement. Give him a break.

Yes...now it makes a little more sense.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
This league will flop. It is a one time circus and once initial excitement fades, people will realise that you can't watch cricket unless you actually know who you are going for.
Remains to be seen. This T20 format is a lot similar to a 3 hour baseball game, and American public (as well as most soccer clubs in Europe and elsewhere) have proven again and again that a franchise model can work, and supporters align themselves with their teams, and will cheer/boo players season by season. Its a different mind-set, where all a supporter wants is for his/her team to win.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
Plus every team/franchise was required to spend a minimum of $3.3m on the day. That also helped jack up prices for some players. If you don't spend it on players, you have to hand over the difference to IPL (like Jaipur probably will do). So may as well get a player you want for a higher price.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
^ Right...but I think the Indian public will take time to feel passionate about Gilchrist hitting sixes for Delhi.
Cricket between regional teams in India have never generated passion that is anywhere close to what we see during international games. On a related note, NHL (National Hockey League) in India has been modelled silimarly with all the glitz and glamour in team names, outfit and TV coverage but has failed to catch the imagination of the public. But then again, this is Cricket and already IPL has received huge media coverage.
I think this is a step in the right direction. It took ICL for the BCCI to embark on this model.....but better late than never.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
..., NHL (National Hockey League) .......
did you mean PHL (premier hockey league)
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai

hah yeah probably, hockey is dying in India
people obsessed with cricket, and i dont blame them, its so much better :)

Yes....I did...I stand corrected.
Thanks.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
so if aussies tour pakistan, they get the money for doing nothing?
on cricinfo, it says david hussey has a contract with an english county, so he can decide to play for the county and get a big hefty paycheck for nothing?
langer has already said he wont be available, so why was he in the player pool in the first place?
im not too concerned with the prices, but the participation of some of these players..
i believe they bid on players again, every year...so doesnt make sense but maybe someone has more info on this
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
^Yaar...I am tearing my hairs out...
I just don't understand all the dynamics at play in this bidding process. Either, somebody does not know their Cricket or something about the process is really screwed up.
I mean Anil Kumble's worth is 500K USD
and Harbhajan's 650K USD. What gives ?
I wouldn't have bought Harbhajan for a dime -- the way the guy is bowling --- and I have no doubts that he will be totally ineffective in Twenty20s.
It is as if "lottery lag gayi" for some very mediocre players.
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
^im not even going to comment on ur analysis there haha
as i said im not concerned about the money aspect, on the whole its fine, there are few things here and there that appear weird, but thats expected in an auction where things are frantic and you have certain rules that you have to fulfill and few other things at play (like mentioned before and in articles you can read up on)
i just don't understand how and why langer (and others) were in the player pool when he was never going to be available, there might be a reason to it
Re: Multi million dollar IPL auctioning begins today (Feb 20) in Mumbai
Look, these are the issues:
Everybody is bamboozled by this. Ponting was asking why a small window can't be opened and I agree it is absolutely pathetic.
Now, about the bidding. This was actually a positive thing. Cricekters get paid absolute crap comnpared to football, tennis and golf. It's about time. Obviously the prices were a little mismanaged but the players' T20 abilty wasn't the factor, it was their pulling power.
Now this is the REAL PROBLEM. No Aussies wanna see Dhoni spank Lee for sixes nor do they want to see Sreesanth bowl Gilchrist. I just can't see the franchise model sticking.
People have asked why not if it works in baseball and football. Well, listen. Football has over 200 national teams and so many players. Hence, there is so much quality you can have various successful leagues, not just one. With baseball, there was never a real great patriotic thing going on.
In cricket, it is all patriotism. You can't remove that and expext passion. And without passion, sport wilts.
