I believe the post said 70% of the women who were surveyed admitted to abuse. We don't know the demographics, maybe they were from a certain area or social class or something or just unlucky enough to be married to frustrated men.
What kind of abuse? What is it defined by? Verbal/physical/sexual/emotional? If abuse is an argument with ur husband where he started swearing...then even in the West 80% of women must have been victims of abuse. Don't just throw a random extremely general fact out there without any evidence to back it up.
Yes, domestic violence exists in Pakistan...Pakistan isn't perfect...is it 70%? No. If anything it's closer to 40%. And that too in tribal/village/rural areas. Education and exposure has changed the mindsets of people living in major cities.
What the hell is a strategy paper? It says nothing about any woman ever being interviewed, or even the word survey. No surprise it was written by gender (women) rights activists. What’s next? Monsanto writing a “strategy paper” on the virtues of agent orange? Four in five? No one is going to deny that a lot of women are victims of domestic abuse, but 4 out of 5? If they are going to BS, they should at least make it believable. And then the report mentions there were only 4000 reported cases. Which equates to a reporting percentage of 0.00465%.
When a man and a woman marry each other, they agree to an unwritten rule of taking care of each others sexual needs, cause any other need can be fulfilled by any other person but sexual, so sex with spouse remains the main obligation of married people.
If a person keeps on rejecting that need of his or her spouse, then the person is disrespecting the spouse. Every now and then, I am sure that any decent man would back off when realizes that wife is tired, or not in mood etc. But if wife is continuously refusing the requests then the man would be left with threes options.
Non consensual sex with his wife
Go and cheat on her with another woman.
Divorce her and marry another woman.
Wife has to agree with one of them.
Martial Rape is a bull crap term probably coined by greedy lawyers or sick minded journalist. If Islam does not recognize it, then there is a reason. Wife is not a victim, cause she is not locked in a jail or has been kidnapped by the husband. Under any normal circumstance, she can leave him if she is not happy. There are no obligations on her to have sex with him, but then she should not remain his wife.
You seriously rely on articles like this? This mentions NOTHING about the survey. 80% based on how many women they interviewed? 10? 100? 1000? 10,000? That’s just for starters.
And someone please explain to me what on earth is a “strategy paper”!
How about study by Journal of Pakistan Medical Association, how about all the educated Pakistani men on this thread promoting and defending marital rape gives one a very clear picture of how bad the situation of spousal abuse is Violence against Women in Pakistan: A Framework for Analysis
According to an estimate, approximately 70 to 90% of Pakistani women are subjected to domestic violence.[SUP]9[/SUP] Various forms of domestic violence in the country include physical, mental and emotional abuse. Some common types include honor killing, spousal abuse including marital rape, acid attacks and being burned by family members. Spousal abuse is rarely considered a crime socially unless it takes an extreme form of murder or attempted murder which could range from driving a woman to suicide or engineering an accident (frequently the bursting of a kitchen stove).[SUP]10[/SUP]
According to a survey conducted on 1000 women in Punjab, 35% of the women admitted in the hospitals reported being beaten by their husbands. The survey reported that on an average, at least two women were burned every day in domestic violence incidents and approximately 70 to 90% of women experience spousal abuse . In 1998, 282 burn cases of women were reported in only one province of the country. Out of the reported cases, 65% died of their injuries.[SUP]10[/SUP] The official figures given for murder of women during the year 1998 were 1974 including 885 murder cases reported in only one province.[SUP]10[/SUP] A study conducted in Karachi reported that a large proportion of women are subjected to physical violence that has serious physical and mental health consequences.
This is excerpts from Journal of Pakistan Medical Association, authored by Pakistani Doctors....come out again in force with denials....no wonder more and more Pakistani girls are marrying out of their culture

However, available statistics from around the globe indicate that one out of every three women experiences violence in an intimate relationship at some point in her life. In 48 population based studies from different parts of the world, ten to sixty nine percent (10- 69%) of the women reported having been physically assaulted by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
A woman is battered, usually by her intimate partner; every 15 seconds and more than three women are murdered by their intimate partners every day in the United States.

You seriously need to climb down from your moral high horse (all that cold in Nunavut getting to you?). Stop your condescending lectures and learn to distinguish between a disagreement about your stance/statistics and support for the thing that you are condemning. As far as I can see, no one in this thread is supporting or promoting marital rape.
Learn to engage people so that they are able to see your point. Holier than thou lectures are not very effective in convincing people.
if the wife is continuously refusing to have sex then there’s a fourth option of asking the wife why that is and trying to compromise. i think as uncomfortable as it may be, before marriage couples should sort of cover this point briefly because everyone has a different sexual ‘appetite’ and it is an important part of marriage. i know it’s taboo, but whatever you’re comfortable with. my first point still stands. talk to your partner about why you aren’t in the mood if it persists.
marital sex might be a bull crap term, but marital rape isn’t. i don’t know the exact details of the islamic stance but a lot of rapes take place out of anger or as a form of punishment. do women who are physically abused by men tend to leave so easily? she is not obliged to get a beating, but it’s not easy for her to walk away either. as i mentioned before, rape or any form of violence has mental health consequences.
i’m not a real feminist, but i find your post a little insensitive toward women, especially since khatti mentioned those who were raped in front of their kids.
