Throw a bunch of stars together and you’re bound to have drama. But the quotient of drama at this year’s Lux Style Awards took a turn perhaps no one could have foreseen! Forget the fire that broke out backstage due to a short circuit - the fireworks on stage between Khuda Kay Liye co-stars Shaan and Iman Ali were far more entertaining.

Till the LSAs, Khuda Kay Liye had only been honoured in Pakistan by the hundreds of Pakistanis who went out to the cinemas to see Shoaib Mansoor’s first feature film. This year’s LSA featured a segment that was meant to celebrate a film and a director that have been feted worldwide, as well as received awards. But what was meant to be a celebration of Khuda Kay Liye (KKL) on Pakistani soil - became an interesting mix of tabloid-worthy drama.
The segment for Khuda Kay Liye began with an electrifying performance featuring Fawad Khan, Saeein Zahoor and a number of dancers, all whirling to the tune of ‘Allah Hu’. That performance in itself reminded people of the power that KKL wields in Pakistan as the best film to have come out of Pakistan in a long, long time. KKL picked up four awards - for Best Actress (Iman Ali), Best Actor (Shaan), Best Director (Shoaib Mansoor) and Best Film. And if anyone was expecting gracious and diplomatic acceptance speeches and seeing the starry cast together again, portraying a happy filmi family - they were clearly in store for anything but that!
The awards began with Iman Ali’s truly strange acceptance speech for Best Actress. She said, “Oh, well its about time I guess!” (as she’s never won for Best Model) and then launched into a passionate and somewhat over-the-top speech heralding Shoaib Mansoor and Fawad Khan, saying “Fawad, you deserved to win an award as well, even if there is a bias, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with you!” She made no mention of her co-star Shaan, but apparently Shaan had been provoked enough into making a statement.
Shaan had a field day, as he took to the stage to receive his award. Instead of speaking about his character in Khuda Kay Liye, he talked endlessly about playing different characters, and said, “A lot of people said I wasn’t part of the promotion for the film etc, but after one finishes a film, you go home and feed your dog, which is what I do.” He also rightly credited the Gen X of Pakistan saying, “People like Fawad Khan and Omran Shafique (of Mauj) are very talented and will take the country forward.” And where Iman had only mentioned that Fawad deserved an award, Shaan decided to one-up her by actually giving his trophy away to his co-actor, saying “I have four of these awards already.”

As the tension in the air grew thicker, Iman Ali and Fawad Khan were next called on stage to accept the trophy on behalf of Shoaib Mansoor. While Fawad was brief and eloquent, Iman went overboard talking about all the troubles Shoaib Mansoor had gone through, and how she was always there “I told Shoaib sahib, even if no one is there, I’m here and I want to do this film. And there were so many problems we went through with money etc.”
But if one was wondering why Shaan hadn’t been asked to accept the award with his costars, Fawad Khan must have been having the same thought. He called Shaan on stage, in what seemed like a nice gesture, saying, “This picture does not seem complete without Shaan”. But forget about being photo-op worthy; it was more of a feuding family reunion: Iman Ali instantly turned her back on Shaan and instead began talking to the presenter, actress Bushra Ansari. But she couldn’t have turned a deaf ear (and clearly didn’t, as she grimaced repeatedly) as Shaan told off the cast in veiled terms for praising Mansoor: “aap log Shoaib Mansoor ki itni tareefein karrahe hain ke agle saal chadarein chadha rahe honge” (you’re all praising Shoaib Mansoor so much that next year you’ll be beatifying him). He then completely rebuked each point Iman had made, saying “Shoaib Mansoor does not show an actor the whole script, he only gives you the dialogues,” to “There were no budget problems with the film as the Pakistan Army was supporting it and now he’s making a film in India with a budget of 52 crores” and “Shoaib Mansoor doesn’t care about if actors are hungry, because he always carries sweets with him.” He added “Shoaib Mansoor has used Pakistan as a launch-pad and I hope he will return to Pakistan after he makes films in India.”
But the drama wasn’t over: Iman was seen bursting into tears afterward and angrily gesturing at the saga everyone had just witnessed. As the warring egos left the stage, Fawad was literally the last man standing and began presenting the next segment with “On a lighter note..”

One could ask if all of this needed to happen, especially on a platform that was meant to herald the film, but what’s done is done. Iman may have provoked Shaan: But as a senior actor and someone who is a national icon for Pakistani films - perhaps he should have taken the higher road and taken it in his stride. Whatever his personal feelings about Shoaib Mansoor or Khuda Kay Liye are, the common feeling at the show was that it did not have to be shown on stage. And even if Shaan neglected to mention Khuda Kay Liye, the truth is that he was part of the film - and has received great mileage out of it and an award to boot. And it is surprising that Shoaib Mansoor was missing in action - perhaps his presence would have helped his feuding cast put aside their personal differences. Or it would have made for more drama - who can tell? At the end of the day, it was the younger Fawad Khan who emerged as the only one unscathed from the filmi drama and appeared gracious as he tried to put the show back on track. Far from being overshadowed by the two stars that Shaan and Iman are, Fawad came across as the star of the show.
And while the high drama and tears surprised and shocked many at the awards, it still made for yet another dose of entertainment. One only hopes that this isn’t edited out when the LSAs are aired on TV. It was a truly filmi performance by Iman and Shaan: and everyone out there should get to see the reel duo in action in their real life!

Re: LUX STYLE AWARDS 2008

[note]People please stay on the topic and let everyone enjoy. [/note]

The only reason why events like LSA attract people--is that there are no such events being managed by the concerned authorities--for promotion of showbiz in Pakistan.

IMO---the showbiz in Pakistan can never excel to the heights the same subject had gone in other countries--most proximized example being INDIA--where they have not ONE but MANY such events--highly well handled and done professionally without upholding cast-and-creed !!

More so--in our Country ( and I am sure at other places also ) the influences to award the prizes or memontos or anything--excel high and people who enjoy proximity with bigwigs--get what they may not deserve otherwise.

As regards management at the function---someone informs me that a hue-n-cry broke out amid the show when some 'short-circuit' fire type of issue took place--that the function had to be concluded early!

P.S.....How's that for keeping on the subject ---:)

Pakistan's current problem is that the old people have occupied and have complete monopoly over the shows. How will they ever be able to bring anything different when they dont allow fresh talet to showcase their work and shine-thru? From decades it's the same names...Imran Kureshi, Freiha Altaf and Tariq Amin!

We do have young VERY talented choreographers/hosts and image consultants..sigh without them how will they ever be able to bring-on new ideas and innovation?

means Geo

*My compliments to the moderators of this thread--for removing certain posts--including mine. *

The show must go---------on!!

Re: LUX STYLE AWARDS 2008

Certain showbiz people who only lobby for their favorites should alter their thinking. They should rise above their personal likes/dislikes , broaden up their brain and start encouraging new talent.

^ That has yet to happen in Pakistan...u'll hear the same names over and over again...u'll see the same people over and over again! NO change NO remix!
