Local names of professions?

What are the local names of professions like Darzi, Qasai… These seems from foreign origin unlike Dhobi, Jolaha, Charwaha (Charwaha seems foreign too as Charagah is Persian)

:hmmm:

Re: Local names of professions?

charwaahaa [charaanewaalaa] is Hindi [from the word 'charnaa' (grazing)]
**
in our area [rural Allahabad, Lucknow, Kanpur areas]**

darzii = siyayyaa [from the word seenaa]
qasaaii = chikwaa
sabzi-farosh = kunjRaa
charwaahaa = gaReriyaa
naaii = naaoo
miraasii = bhaaT/bhaaTin
bhangan = mehtaraanii

Re: Local names of professions?

I think local name of Chawaha is Gadariya

Re: Local names of professions?

yes. that's what i wrote above. :)

Re: Local names of professions?

but why our old literature don't refer to these professions with words you mentioned above? In poetry forum (Sultan Bahoo thread) he has used Darzi.

Re: Local names of professions?

i think they are local terms...the ones i have quoted is used in awadhi and poorbii zabaan.

Re: Local names of professions?

there is one profession that is Hindinized in our area:

behishti [water carrier] = pan bharaa [pan= paani; bharaa = bharne waalaa]

Re: Local names of professions?

Qasai is foreign term for obvious reasons as locals were vegetarian? No. There are instances in Hindu scriptures that they consumed meat. Mahabharat and Ramayan may have local names of these professions.

Re: Local names of professions?

these names are more known among local Muslim populations...city folks of Hindus are more familiar with word "kasai" because they use Muslim terminology. they also call Halal meat.

Re: Local names of professions?

In Sindhi behisti = Pakhaali (probably the bag he carries in called Pakhaal)

For charwaha/ gadariya we have different words for shepherd considering what his herd contain.

If its bakri (goat) , he is called Bak-raar

If its bheR (ridh in Sindhi), he is called redh-aar

If he got herds (in Sindhi Dhann) of cows/ buffaloes, he is called Dhann-aar

Re: Local names of professions?

Tabeeb and Hakeem got local word ved.... seems that ved were performing many tasks in ancient India besides dealing with patients.

Re: Local names of professions?

the correct word is ‘vaidya’…ved is their holy scriptures.

yes, they were more than what their names suggest.

Re: Local names of professions?

Sindhi word for daakiya (postman) is Tapaali… daak is Tapaal.. chughal khor people are also called Tapaali.

This post is sponsored by: Tapal Tea :hehe:

Re: Local names of professions?

:smack:, O bhai it is not a Hindi word, it is URDU.
If it is Hindi then do let us know its Urdu equivalent.

If ‘laaj’ is Hindi and ‘sharm’ is Persian then what is the Urdu word?
If ‘lahoo’ is Hindi and ‘khoon’ is Persian then what is the Urdu word?
If ‘talwaar’ is Hindi, and ‘shamsheer’ is Arabic then what is the Urdu word?
If ‘kunji’ is Hindi and ‘chaabi’ is Portuguese then what is the Urdu word?

Please do NOT think that Urdu simply got created out of the blue when several languages were jumbled together put in a box. It doesn’t happen like that. It is like putting all the components of a clock in a box and shaking them up to create an assembled clock.

Re: Local names of professions?

i think we have discussed this in another thread so no point discussing it here once again.

the root of the word given in dictionary says ‘Hindi’.

you are likely confusing the faarsii word “chareedan” meaning charnaa/charaanaa [grazing]…the coining of the word charwaahaa does NOT follow Faarsii method.

Faarsii waale "chareedan=charnaa/charaanaa" se derivative words jo bante haiN vo haiN charinda as in ‘charinde,-parinde’], charaagaah, chareedah [grazed].

i hope this suffices.

thank you.

Re: Local names of professions?

It is not just about one single word. My point was that the language existed long before it was given a specific name like 'Urdu' or 'Hindi' or 'Hindustani' or 'Hindvi'. Today the only thing that makes this ONE language either 'Urdu' or 'Hindi' is the choice of another language for certain words (Persian/Arabic or Sanskrit).
Hence a word which we use in this language could either be Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, English OR COMMON ORIGINAL **word of this language. Thus 'ka/ke/ki' or 'lahoo' or 'laaj' are original words COMMON to both Urdu and Hindi.
**To call such words 'Hindi' is injustice to Urdu
. The same way it would be injustice to Hindi if these words are called Urdu. Because they are COMMON ORIGINAL words of both languages. (Actually, it is argued that Urdu and Hindi are merely dialects of the SAME ONE language).

Re: Local names of professions?

^ then why dictionaries mention the origin of ALL the words contained in them?

the basic structure of the language for Hindi and Urdu is same but what differentiates Urdu from Hindi and vice versa is the vocabulary that we use in our sentences. if the vocabs are of Hindi origin then we call it Hindi and if we use more Arabic/Persian words then we call it Urdu.

if we use mixture of Urdu/Hindi/Engliash words then we call it Hindustaanii.

examples:

Hindi:

aaj ke mukhya samaachaar meN mahngaaii bhatta par sarkaarii TippaNRii kii aalochnaa kii gaii hai.

[most words are of Hindi origin apart from the basic words that both languages use]

Urdu:

imroz ke Khabarnaame kii surKhii meN garaanii mo'aavizah par Hukoomati jaariyah kii saKht mazammat kii gaii hai.

[again, most words used are of Arabic and Faarsii words.]

*Hindustani:
*

aaj kii aham KhabroN meN sarkaar dwaaraa dearness allowance par jo comments kiye gaye haiN un par kaThin shabdoN meN mazammat kii gaii hai

[words from both Hindi/Persian/Arabic/English are used...it's a hotchpotch [khichRii] language and is referred to Hindustaani]
