I remember listening to an aalim speak and he said something that has stayed with me for years.
He said people lie and usually when they lie about themselves it is to present themselves in a better light than they actually are - whether it is about their aamaal/deeds or their circumstances.
His response was that not only should a person ask for forgiveness from Allah for having lied, the person should actually aspire to be and take steps to be the better person they claimed they were so that the lie is no longer a lie. Food for thought...

You're comparing apples to oranges. Yes, a lie is a lie is a lie, and to lie to another person doesn't speak well of the liar's character. But, you also look at the intention behind the lie and the impact of the lie. If he lied about being a billionaire because he was afraid that a girl would marry him for his money and not the man he is - you would say his lie was not malicious. But if he lied about his wealth because he made his money from ill-gotten gains and he didn't want to explain the origin of the money - that's another issue.
In terms of the impact, going back to the nurse/doctor situation - did he lie because he was ashamed of being a nurse - if you don't have pride in yourself - speaks to a weak character. If you thought she wouldn't marry a nurse, speaks to how little you think of her character (if she didn't want to marry a nurse - then she's the shallow one).
