The other day my daughter was watching Tom and Jerry. She is not Tom and Jerry fan as she is growing up watching Dora, Caillou and Barney. She could not understand why Tom and Jerry keep hurting each other using forks, knives, baseball bats and steaming irons. She does not find it funny.
I on the other hand love Tom and Jerry, Road Runner and Popeye the Sailor where characters are brutally hitting and hurting another character. For some reason that was funny.
Nowadays, most of the stuff on Kids channel gives out a message. Kids learn something. Some info, manners, another language and stuff like that.
I know that later sounds better but I did not grow up to be a dumb kid either. Cartoons did not help me but they did not make me a violent person either. For us, it was pure fun and nothing more than that. For my kids, cartoons are quite educational.
Would you rather have your kids watch Tom and Jerry or Dora the explorer? Or you don’t care too much and let them, enjoy whichever cartoon they like to watch.
Personally I do not thing that exposure to violence is bad for child development and psyche but experts have differing opinions.
Whether or not exposure to media violence causes increased levels of aggression and violence in young people is the perennial question of media effects research. Some experts, like University of Michigan professor L. Rowell Huesmann, argue that fifty years of evidence show “that exposure to media violence causes children to behave more aggressively and affects them as adults years later.” Others, like Jonathan Freedman of the University of Toronto, maintain that “the scientific evidence simply does not show that watching violence either produces violence in people, or desensitizes them to it.”
TLK, how much Tom and Jerry did you watch when you were growing up? I remember the 5 minute morning cartoon after exercise in the morning PTV transmission and a half hour weekly cartoon that used to come at 3:30 p.m. or something like that.
Compared to today's non-stop 24/7 cartoons, it was nothing. I was deprived.
Anyway, I am a big supporter of educational TV but it's no silver bullet for kids education. Nor do I believe that watching Tom and Jerry or a non-G rated movie will make them monsters.
Dora the khota! I hate her...swiper no swiping...come on, say it with me! Although, I love the Back pack song!
I used to love 'Blue's Clues' - that was cool. We had some Scouser presenting it in the U.K. I saw the American version once and oh man, he was a freak!
We didnt ever have time for cartoons when younger, school, mosque, homework, beatings...you name it...no tv!
I must say, The Disney Channel, is not very educational at all.

I feel for you . You had very abusive childhood and that shows. j/k , j/k , j/k
I used to think she was cool, but then after a while you realise she ain’t that clever. Always asking for help. I mean, where would she be without Boot’s! Poor little bandaar does everything for her.
Milly, I love Blues Clues...but I've only seen the American version. We love The Simpsons as well but kids can only watch when we are watching because some of the words are amazing if you know what I mean and if they ask...we can try to explain.
Now a few months ago, my sis was visiting and she mentioned that she attributes her son's hyperness to Tom and Jerry type of cartoons because he identifies himself with the scenarios and even acts them out later. I don't know.
I think how a child grows up is affected by many different factors, and the quantity of those factors.
Like for example if you yell at your kid or hit them once in a while, it has a totally different impact than if you do that all the time.

Animal rights!
lol, hun i think you should stop watching Dora and the Disney channel...:p
Yes Dora is the same. Diego is Dora’s cousin not boyfriend .
My kids are totally not into the Disney Channel. Thank goodness! It’s so different from real Disney innit…where everything is magical and silly unlike the channel where everything is so 2009
Personally I am pretty strict in what I let my kids watch on TV. There is a list I have
No Ugly looking Cartoons(that includes all the weird nicklodean cartoons like catdog …also includes Sponge Bob..eventhough I let them occasionally watch SpongeBob)
No Girl Boy stuff wale cartoons…no serials like Hanna Montana ,Brats.etc
More of PBS stuff(I would prefer they only watch that though:cb:)
No foul language ones like the ones that use the words “stupid” a lot.
Okay thats it…Am I too tough on them:hmmm:
Today at school, one little chap decides he wants to stretch his legs whilst sitting in the middle of the carpet, when everyone is there too, needless to say there was no room. I very politely reminded him of our ‘good sitting’ rules. There’s a little cartoon boy sitting all lovely with his knees crossed, hands on knees and a huge smile.
Miss Milly: Jimmy, can you show me good sitting, just like the little boy here.
Little Jimmy: he’s not real, hes just a picture.
Now, we have pictures of the kids for ‘special person of the week’ and we had just chosen a new person, so a new picture went up on the wall.
Miss Milly : Amy’s picture is up on the wall…are you saying Amy isnt real?
