KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

KCites miss freedom, slam ‘war on jeans’

By Afnan Khan

LAHORE: Students of the Kinnaird College (KC) miss the liberty they used to enjoy as members of one of the oldest educational institutions in the region.

Students voiced concerns over the curb placed on their cultural diversity and freedom before the wave of extremism hit them in the form of a ban on wearing specific kinds of dresses. A student even referred to the ban as ‘war on jeans’.

Kinnaird is considered the oldest women’s college of the country where intermediate level classes were started in 1913 followed by graduate classes four years later. There are around 3,300 students currently enrolled at the university. The autonomous institute mainly offers Masters degrees in English Literature, Applied Linguistics, Mass Communication, French, English Language, Environmental Sciences, Science Education, Statistics, and Computer Sciences. MS in Accounting and Finance and MPhil in English Literature have been introduced very recently.

“I think it’s a bad idea to give in to the demands of terrorists. The administration should instead decrease activity outside college premises and boost security arrangements,” second-year student Anum said.

All students are extremely perturbed due to the rumours about terrorist threats and we don’t feel secure in and around the college premises.’
Third-year student Sana

I believe it is a bad idea to act exactly how the extremists wants us to. It will only encourage them to push us further and take pride in their success while we will lose by doing so.’
Fourth-year student Saima

An atmosphere of fear and confusion has engulfed the college and it is closely linked to the introduction of new rules banning jeans and making dupatas mandatory.’
Fourth-year student Hina

The college administration has warned the students of stern disciplinary action if they talk to reporters.’
First-year student declining to be named

One of my classmates was shivering with fear when she told us of two women who reprimanded several students for exposing themselves by wearing figure-hugging dresses. She also threatened of divine punishment if we did not mend ways.’
Second-year student Shazray

I second wiseguy, ..it is a conspiracy .. you know the Zionist conspiracy :)

Yes uniform come under discipline but until school only.

It's all cultural as koozager said, .. Shalwar Kameez from sub-continent .. and jeans from western. It has nothing to do with studying and neither with religion.

Bhaijaan in poverty, corruption, living conditions India is ahead of these countries.

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

This news is making my blood boil. WHY are institutes of higher thinking and education bending to the will of thugs, and since when has this become a government policy to direct universities to institute dress codes - this only makes the terrorists more brazen, because they know tthey can bully and get what they want.

You don't want to wear *%^$#@ jeans, because your &^%$$ looks too big on them, and you'd prefer to hide it in a burqa, that doesn't mean everyone else has to dress just like you.

Friggin' jerks. I am tempted to belittle this decision by Kainnard with more profanities, but it will just end in a ban.

hahahaha.. :rotfl:And care to explain why do Indians and Pakistanis work for Saudis and Sudanese??? I was talking to my Sudanese friend and he told me that Khartoum is the only city in the world which can withstand nuclear war fare since they have a city far more advanced than Paris or London underground. Care to tell me which country has something like that? Please don’t bad-mouth Saudis please. I have not been there, but I have been told Riyadh and Jeddah are much more advanced and Saudis have made everything themselves. Plus, don’t forget Saudis gave zero, Alebgra, Modern Quantum Physics and Islam(above all) to the world? Which country in the world has given so many things to the world? England gave English, Israel gave Christianity, Canada gave Airplanes but Saudis gave foundation for these things…

We should shut down Arts, Music institutions completely. Music has no place in Islam. period.

funny, I always was under the impression that Allah gave us Islam and not Saudis.

Yes shut down arts because calligraphy and all the beautiful mosaic designs that is part of islamic arts comes not from instruction but from wearing kurta shalwar

Your posts are always a riot to read. :)

I think some people don't realize that sandhu is a joke account, he is actually mocking the right wing with his over the top assertions.

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

You guys are unbelievable. You all realize that:

  1. Taliban are a mortal threat to Pakistan.
  2. The Pakistan Army and ISI has soft corner for Taliban.
  3. The Political government is unable to force the army to fight taliban all out.
  4. All cities of Pakistan are under threat of talibanisation.

Considering the above, if the college has taken measures to prevent any unfortunate incident, you guys still have a problem with that! Amazing.

Consider what's happening in Karachi. Our police and forces are incapable of restraining 'miscreants'.

I hope you people do not have a problem of governments 'bending' to the threat of swine flu and instituting preventive measure.

I have no issue with people taking precautionary measures, but then lets call it what it is and not go into mumbo jumbo..read the last sentence.

secondly, I think at some point in time as a nation we have to stand up to them and say you are not going to change our lifestyle because of your threats. I mean its not taleban in power that are forcing a change in lifestyle but a threat of these idiots attacking an institution that is forcing it.

what is next, proactively guys grow beards just so they are not targets and wear oonchi shalwars?

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

^ Well, my sister used to study in KC a few years ago. She used to wear jeans when she wanted and no body had any issues. This was the same when PML had the notorious 2/3 majority government.

If they think that it is good to take precaution, why not? They are not forcing them to wear burqa or something. Would you rather have students potentially assaulted?

If I think I am a potential target and the police/forces won't protect me, i'd grow a beard.

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

^^ why cant the school invest in beefing up their security instead?

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

^ provide armed guards to students whenever they go out?

When was the last time you visited a Pakistani college/school? C'mon man, they took over a POLICE TRAINING ACADEMY.

Dont worry, if they did (which they didnt), nature's equilibrium will be at work again - to counter that, Altaf Hussain will order all his MQM commando trainees at the 'Altaf Hussain Institute of Bhatta' to attend 'principles of mobile snatching 101' in bikinis.

I would not have students assaulted, however as a nation we need to take a stand at some point in time.

what else will you want to give up for fear of taleban, stop sending girls to schoo, stop watching TV? stop shaving? where do we draw the line.

again, the college could have just simply stated why they have to do it, the going back to ohhh we have had this rule for ages and we just did not enforce it means diddly squat.

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

So 10,000 Talibunn men (that’s a rather conservative figure) will somehow control Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other cities whose populations I need not put down here, not to mention the fact that we have well over 500K troops.

This is why that hype about Islamabad being taken over by the Taliban was just laughable and now Lahore :hehe:

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

They took over Police Training Academy. They attacked SL cricket team... a college cannot even take precautionary measures?

Re: KC Lahore imposes ban on jeans after alleged threats

it can, but it needs to be honest. that whole principal was not aware of a rule we have already had was just moronic at best.
