Re: Just because you like wearing a religious symbol
I see lot of muslims who become alims or converted muslims, have beards because when they get closer to ALLAH they start following sunnah of Hazrat Mohammad (p.b.u.h.). Look at Hamza yusuf, Yusuf Estes , Sheikh deedat they didn't have beards before its just when they realize what is right sunnah they came closer to Islam and they had beards.
Re: Just because you like wearing a religious symbol
A big number of good and educated muslims don't necessarily wear these symbols and it's sad that they are treated as outsiders within the muslim community, they are 3rd class muslims, not worth anything. They are not allowed to represent Islam in any way.
The idea of judging someone's religious capacity has come from Wahabism, a sort of Secularism, the very thing most of us hate, it tells us that only people who wear symbols are worth of following.
I agree with you, Hareem. It is sad to see that you need to inspect physical features of a scholar in search for his credibility. Maybe that's why we are so jacked up! We don't let the moderates come forward. But isn't that what you get in religion? It's all or nothing! You are either a practising muslim or you are not. It's even harsher on muslim women, they are obliged to do hijab. If our community is not lenient with clean shaven men, how do you expect them to show any leniency towards nonhijabi muslim women?

That's because people have left the soul, we have become secular in a religious sort of way.

The majority of muslims around me (here and in Pakistan) don't have beards, don't wear hijabs... so how is it possible that the community has not been lenient towards them when they in fact make up the majority of the community? Are you seriously claiming they're being victimised?

Are they scholars? I was talking about our community showing leniency towards nonbearded nonhijabi scholars. read the thread.:p
Re: Just because you like wearing a religious symbol
I think when one **gradually *takes up wearing a headscarf, deressing modestly or in case of a man keeping a beard with their own free will, that depicts that they have reached a higher status of Imaan. It's not something they just did because they *had to and had no other choice. Like a daughter who has seen her mother wear abaya/burqa/hijab always and has seen her family very strict about it wouldn't know its true essence and would do it just out of family obligation.
But despite the inner intentions or state of faith, anybody who does wear a hijab/headscarf/abaya etc amongst a crowd of those who don't observe pardah has my respect. For they are still doing something that pleases Allah and His Prophet SAW.
The love for Allah, His religion as well as His Prophet (SAW) is like a step ladder. One gradually climbs higher. Anyone who tries to bypass the lower ones to get to the top would naturally stumble and fall back.
Re: Just because you like wearing a religious symbol
mm that isn't the meaning of the word secular. not even close. fundamentalist/literalist is more like it.
in secularism, state is separate from religion/religious ideologies....in this case, we are keeping religion separate from new ideas or different ideas/opinions.
That's how I see it.
But yeah, literalist is the right term, a scholar (the one in above posted video) said, "Literalism is a playpen". hehe
Re: Just because you like wearing a religious symbol
yeah pretty simple....
A religious muslim is someone who thinks everyone else is better than him.
Humility and piety do go together. However a religious person would also not let go of his moral duty to tell someone they are doing wrong at least just because he thinks that he himself might be a gunnah gar.
Re: Just because you like wearing a religious symbol
but isnt that part of all the abrahamic faiths - religion is completely defined in the revelation of their respective prophet, innovations are deemed unnecessary and mostly harmful? i think you have been hanging out with theorist too much and now your taqwah has been compromised.

Morals are not the topic here unless you consider clean-shaving and not covering head immoral.

No I wasn't referring to not wearing a headscarf or being clean shaved at all. I was just replying that humility is a wonderful trait but our duty of Amr bil maroof wa nahi anil munkir shouldn't be affected by it just because we think that everybody else is better than us. :)
