is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Or is it better to follow the herd?

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Well the popular answer would be to think out of the box, and that is often the right answer.

However, it depends on where the herd is going I should think... As a general rule, one way of finding your way, is to follow the crowd. If you dont know where to go, your best bet is to go where everyone else is headed.

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Thatasthu (agreed). As the saying goes, as a value investor, you have to be a selective contrarian. Same holds true in general.

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

a quick question
what do you mean by "herd", bunch of people following Hinduism or Islam?

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

This thread is in the Philosophy / Spirituality section. And is not limited to discussion of religion.

Herd is just majority.

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Depends. If you do it all the time, you'll find yourself out of job, money and home. :P

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

^ True that.

One of these I will decode the various symbols such as :P

Re: is thinking outside the “box” a good trait?

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

It depends. depends on who is the leader of the herd or whose thought the herd is following.

Re: is thinking outside the “box” a good trait?

Good one.

Or maybe just staying on the sidelines.

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Would you follow the leader you respect no matter what? That is, would you never question his thought process? Is there such a leader among us today?

Bernie Sanders comes close for me.

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

exactly, if the herd is being lead by some powerful like America then following the herd is also a smart idea :p

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

sometimes, guidance given by leaders is timeless. It covers all the times to come.

Main behak sakoon ye majaal kia
mera rehnuma koi aur hai

Re: is thinking outside the “box” a good trait?

probably there is nothing like thinking out of box. Its either following herd A or herd B. :halo:

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Rehnuma yani leader? Guide?

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Oh no one just stands on the sidelines, u better run..

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

yes uncle the leader who guides you

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

I like that saying.

Re: is thinking outside the "box" a good trait?

Is "thinking" outside the box - good? Or Is it better to follow the herd?

The first part of that question demands a "yes" or a "no" response ... In isolation to the second part - it is readily the case that one will look to see that "thinking outside the box" is good ... But the term "OR" is out of place since the initial part of the question is now being put up against the second in a comparative ... but the comparative does not present an OR clause ... This is either Good or Bad - It does not make sense to ask - Is this good Or is that better? Because something can be good whilst another something is better at the same time.

So since the question is forcing a limitation outside what is reasonable another response is required.

First of all - it is neither better nor good to follow the herd, unless certain conditions are met. Those being that you trust the herd has done its research before you choose to follow. Also, thinking outside the box and blind following assumes that there is no other way to think - but there is ..

"To think inside the box"

Thinking or Reacting
Thinking Internally or Thinking Externally

Sometimes there is no need to think at all - like for example - a fire - yes in that case - follow the herd, but keep your wits.
Thinking internally means that no new blue sky ideas are required - merely corroborating and validating another person's ideas is enough here ... Thinking externally means that the concept must be invented from scratch ...
