So far in this thread everyone is saying i think/scholar said/he thinks etc etc.....it's all opinons there is hardly any fact........
I don't think in our religion it's considered haram, i would say it's Maqrooh not entirely haram!

It is makrooh uptil certain extinct. As in for example if its killing you it makes a common sense not to do it. In Islam it makes it haram then.
Makrooh = Something that God doesnt like us to do but he will not write it as a bad deed also.

amm..lets make this a legit question. Since Oxygen is necessaty for living and carbon dye Oxide is not. Which also comes from Smoking (carbon).
What about the people who work in the mill where its like 100Degree farenhite and the burned metal provides fumes which also can kill you slowly, gives you lung deseases when you are like 50-60.
Is that haram also?

Oxygen cleans you blood bro. lol Try not breathing for 1 minute and you'll know how necessary it is. :) Your lungs have little tiny vissels which allow to gain the oxygen and add it to your blood cell and subtract carbon from it and send it back out. Your blood cells are squeezed in by heart and sent to lungs and second beat sends it back your entire body, including the ceribrus of the brain.
This whole process takes no more then .5 Second. :)
