I understand what Milly is saying. Cyber/virtual space allows a much easier platform for bullying. Kids who have access to these gadgets will be more exposed to the recieving end as well as the giving end.
Imagine your child is one who gets bulled...sure at school it happens, but there are teachers around, other kids and other parents and a child can express how he feels more easily. But imagine your child age 13 for example gets an array of emails/texts/instant messages over and over every day and because its not face to face - the things said are more viscious and more cowardly people come out and a group forms and a group of people bully your child.
Then again lots of children get bullied for not having the latest technology.
When I have kids one day, i would really hate it it they had their nose stuck in a computer/games console all day just in general!
I dont particularly agree with buying kids their own personalised gadgets like iphones and ipads at ages below of highschool years... if we (the hubby and I have a gadget) then the child is most welcome to use it, under supervision ofcourse.
I dont believe my child is going to be disadvantaged in anyway at all.. if her teacher thinks that I should invest... than I may consider, but whatver she needs to learn, is provided by her school.
She's only 5, and they are already using iPads in their school for certain learning activities, and they do use the interactive whiteboard as well to monitor whether the child is reading the words or just reading from memory... but im not going to rush to the shops and go buy something for her at home just for those purposes..
If she wants to write, I prefer she use a book.. so i can monitor her handwriting. It's also something very treaureable. I love finding notes written in her handwriting.. Dont have the heart to throw such things away :)
But yeah, she's only 5 at the moment... so not sure what'll happen as she grows up. Dont know if I'll become more linient or not.. I dunno. But, I dont think I would be buying anything for her just because a cousin or a friend has something and its "very cool".
again
as I said its not because of technology.
how hard is that for you to understand?
have you ever went to a Japanese school? You would think they would be bursting with tech right? but no, they are the same as they were 100years or so ago.
Technology is not the main cause of problems in Japan and unlike other countries like UK or USA or even Australia they do not accept you that easily.
If you want me to tell you where South Asians would sit in the Japanese society ranking it would be below as in you wouldn't see them that much and Japanese would not like to be associated with them. Its changing of course but this is how it is currently
Japanese then Korean/Chinese then whites then Japanese/other race (mixed children) then african Americans then Saudis then South Asians
not a high regard to people who have dark skin but see Japanese are polite so you won't notice it. My mom went through a lot so have my friends and I.
you can keep telling me "oh but this person wrote this book and it said this" but truth is it doesn't matter because I lived in it and I certainly didn't have technology back then.
So you're wrong about technology being used as bullying that makes kids go off the rail its the kids themselves using their brains.
I dont know about anyone else here… but in regards to bullying.. that has always existed, with or without technology.
The difference in today’s era is that there is a new medium for bullying and its actually quite a nasty one. In a way
The one good thing about technology-bullying is that… it can be tracked and dealt with, with very severe and real consequences…
Having said that, I dont think kids under whatever the age limit is on facebook, should be accessing facebook… or any other sites for that matter. I dont understand parents who create logins for their kids.. but I wont know until i get to that stage..
Also parents who don't mind letting their kids using SNS sites are just asking for trouble. Its one thing that an adult who knows the danger our there to use it but for a kid who doesn't know that not everyone is a nice person its just tragic.
This is a rather cheesy thing to do but i came across these lyrics and feel like positing them here.
The worship and money merged all colours and creed
Into one religion that was driven by greed
Corporate machines trying to sell you **** you don’t need
On television and the ad breaks in between
Until people only cared about material things
Not lives with other fellow human beings
And I’m guilty of it to or so it seems
Thats another extreme I think but you can always try to balance it out in the next generation and they will correct what the prior (our generation) did wrong with their future generation.
it will always evolve and hopefully we'll be better.
Noone may be admitting it because maybe in the era we were there wasnt a lot of this technology savvy products?
A lot of people who are now in their early 30's and older... did not have cool gadgets with internet access to sit around in their rooms... I was I believe around 21 when I actually had a massive laptop that did not have wifi.. it was just for doing documents...
There was one main computer in the house that was placed where others could see it... I couldnt lug the thing somewhere privately..
So yes, hence thats why there may be a few people not mentioning what they used to get upto technology wise... cus there really wasnt much besides your Sega, Nintendo, Attari... and a massive computer that was for the enitre family... or in some cases, only for daddy's :)

My SO was pretty active kid but he also played games and a had a computer (he's 28 now) he balanced it out I guess wasn't glued to it unlike my cousins or his nephew/nieces.
I’m not THAT young that no one else had technology when they were my age. My brother was into computers early on, so we had a computer in 1993, so I know that was still relatively early compared to most families…but by the time I was in HS and college (in the 2000s), many many many ppl my age had internet and computers and cell phones…so, no, it wasn’t that rare for anyone to have a computer/internet.
^ I am not saying there was no technology.... I am saying it wasnt as versatile and portable as things are these days..
my sister is 6 years younger than me, there is a huge technology gap between her era and mine.. I didnt even know what a USB was when i finished my degree.. and IT degree... when she started, that was all they carried.
This is so well said! I call myself a fencesitter when it comes to kids using technology - I'm not a fan, but I do see the merits. But the socializing on technology apps is out of hand. It's no longer about how parents are raising their children, it's the culture of e-communication which results in poor language skills and lack of accountability for what we're saying and how we say it.
So is it the fault of the iPoo or the child or the parent?
It's like saying to the heart patient, damn that nihari was delicious. It's the Nihari's fault that your cholesterol is 280. Not yours. Because when there is nihari, it will be be eaten...all of it, by YOU.
What I'm saying is that technology isn't bad. As a mommy, I need to set guidelines for my kids. I gotta tell new parents here that what we go through with poo cleaning and diaper rash, nursing and latching on issues, is the probably the easiest part of parenting though it may not seem so at the time. The test begins when your kids get exposed to the real world out there. What are you going to do? Hide them inside your home? Or be in denial that change isn't needed? We can teach our children how to communicate with humans AND communicate via technology. Why not? You just have to help them.

The book blames modernity and less and less exposure to nature...and not just technology. I haven't said anything about bullying and racism...don't know why you're mixing everything up.
the book talks about Japan's obsession of competing with west and its negative effect on the society.
sighs
exactly you have no idea
so stop talking as if you know why Japan has a high suicide rate or why they are in depression
and this thread was about Technology and bullying so why would you say it wasn't about it?
and total BS that its because we don't have enough green thats only in the city area so you're saying that theres no depression in other prefectures?
Try picking another country like Korea for its high suicide rate (top in the world) but again it wouldn't be because of bullying but because of the schooling system and the need to have the perfect looks, grades etc.
