But it is unnecessary. I'm sure you can give me lots of advantages of using tech (which I probably know as I'm in a more technical field than most) but at the end of the day children will still develop** into highly intelligent, socialised, (possibly more) well rounded individuals without it.**
so do you count internet/computer as technology or not?
but at the end of the day children will still develop into highly intelligent, socialised, (possibly more) well rounded individuals without it.
Hmmm, by this standard, kids from a third world nation in Africa should be far more intelligent, socialized and well rounded individuals than a kid living in a big metro in USA.
its not the tech, its what you do with it. I am not justifying my choices, but my daughter has Ipod and she used our ipads. She has Quran recited loaded, she watches cartoon shows on netflix and as Niks said, write her journal and read downloaded books.
But you dont have to agree with me. We all are going to do good for our kids at the end.
I think as long as you're aware of what you're kid is watching there is nothing wrong with let them using this stuff....same goes for tv and video games.
Hmmm, by this standard, kids from a third world nation in Africa should be far more intelligent, socialized and well rounded individuals than a kid living in a big metro in USA.
uhmmm, that sounds incredibly insulting and somewhat racist.
i'm sure kids in third world countries with access to decent education are far more intelligent and have more common sense than americans bought up relying on technology.

And what makes you think they're not? lol Their colour?
All I know is that USA and Japan have a higher depression and suicide rate among kids than the kids in 3rd world countries.

I think you missed the keyword in stoppits post "will still" meaning without technology one can still be well rounded and intelligent.
O please, dont play with my words. You know exactly what I am talking about when I am comparing kids of third world nation with kids of developed countries.
I am sorry, fuzool kee behes kerne ka time nahi hai meray paas. You guys can raise your kids in un-wired world. I am not that great of a parent and I like technology to be around. I am out of this thread.
The reason is technology driven society where 52% kids have never seen sunrise or sunset. I remember reading this few years back in a book.
books and reality are very different. Its not because of technology but society and the close-mindedness of people (xenophobia etc)
Its changing now but that is not the issue with bullying or the ever increasing suicide rates in Japan/Korea/China
And where else can I find this reality? Through you? (I don’t even know your real name) On a virtual forum? LOL
The author is Japanese and he has put a lot of work in it…please don’t disregard his efforts like that.
This article also indicate the busy lifestyle of parents that’s causing this.
I can give you plenty of references regarding kids in UK and USA being the most unhappiest kids and reasons are modernity and technology and less and less touch with nature.

Before gadgets, it was Bollywood movies that kids were watching and learning stupid dance moves, before that it was romantic novels for grownups that kids were reading, and even before that, it must have been something else.
It has nothing to do with latest trends, it all comes back to parenting I think
Just because there have always been trends doesnt mean it is ok to justify new ones.
It does come down to parenting.
I do not feel that children having these kinds of technologies enhance or add value to the basics that they require to help them learn, develop and grow. I get the whole password protection, limited time and all that jazz, but really, are they actually necessary?
I have an interactive whiteboard in my class, do we use it every single day...no. I see it's limitations daily, it doesnt encourage questioning skills and nor does it provoke thinking in young children. It's shiny and bright and wow, but that's it, it doesnt actually develop their critical thinking skills.
You know what does, finding a rubgy ball wrapped up in wrapping paper outside in the plant pots. That encourages thinking, questioning skills...basics.
There's a lot less talk involved too. Talk is so important for young people.
Obviously I see the value of technology, im using it right now. I dont see the value of certain technologies for young children.
It's so weird...I mean other parents have looked down at me for not using technology or for not being technology aware, at least now (after reading this thread) I know that I'm doing nothing wrong by not being a technology freak. Anyway, this thread really caught my attention...I should get off of the computer now coz my eyes and fingers are hurting.
In regards to Milly's OP. I don't like communications aps for kids either. I think they teach poor communications skills to children who already don't know how to communicate in real life.
So we have a lot of ipoos in the house but kids are not allowed access unless for a game of virtual UNO or angry birds.

Thank goodness for you NJay, you understood my point!
Kids really don't need these iPads and what not. Yes, by using it they gain knowledge in how to use this stuff. But by not using it they loose nothing.
A lot of people arpund me think that their kids will be more intelligent by using all these gadgets. Well they are only becoming zombies who spend all their time in their rooms playing on their iPads and laptops.
Peer pressure is less worse than we think.
I wanted a furby and a Tamagotchi too when I was 9. Everyone had one. Did I get one? No i didnt. And for a short while I used to be dissapointed and that was it. After that your kid forgets and life goes on. You don't miss what you don't have.
Yes technology has become a part of todays society. You can not ignore it. But that does not mean that is has become so important that your child's skills and cognitive development depend on it.

This is so well said! I call myself a fencesitter when it comes to kids using technology - I'm not a fan, but I do see the merits. But the socializing on technology apps is out of hand. It's no longer about how parents are raising their children, it's the culture of e-communication which results in poor language skills and lack of accountability for what we're saying and how we say it.
everything. sab kuch mai agree karti hoon. and the bestest thing is that she didn't even tell me about this thread and i just came wandering in like a lost puppy, just to agree with her.
