Tell that to the millions of us who just wish to see the farthest reaches of the universe. Beneficial or not, the passion just endeavors ignite in mankind is worth way more than a few million dollars. That passion then leads to hundreds of other inventions that do prove beneficial to us.
I remember when I was a kid and some NASA folks visited our school. I watched them as they told us about what they did and what they had seen beyond our world. I looked at them and in that moment I wanted to see it all, know it all, experience it all. It made me dream of another kind of world. It made me ME. I will never forget.
India did it! Ab jalnay se faida kiya?
I don't have to repeat myself ... I love the idea of space travel ... I collected my Star Wars and Star Trek through the years and I read my astronomy mags ... I love astronomy and was the treasurer of the astronomy society at uni ... But it is all so romantic at the moment ... If you play your cards right then in the Afterlife ... You will be blessed with that very ability ... The gift of paradise is like that journey in to the deep mysteries of space ... That is the reason why we have space and the stars to gaze at ... They are signs for what could be ... If you so desire it enough.
My wish in juniors was to be the first person on Mars ... And everyone laughed at me ... I still cherish that desire ...

ok, I needed a moment to process that. Can we please keep afterlife and paradise out of a discussion for once? Not everyone believes in paradise and afterlife so their way of exploring the outer space is actually going there - physically. There are also things like astral projection and lucid dreaming that can enable one to travel the universe. See? no need for even afterlife or paradise. Does this mean we should stop funding space exploration?

I was talking physically ... We will not go beyond this solar system ... Not in a hundred years ... The nearest star system that contain planets that may support life is about 3 light years away ...
The way to get there will involve sending out packets of oxygen, food and water and supplies for repairs in probes every so often so as to create a stepping stone system ... The manned craft will need to speedily travel distances in the hope of running in to "an oasis probe" ... (I've coined it here) ... They should be loaded with a beacon ... Even then we will need to send out may be 500 or 600 of those probes before the manned mission goes out ... To achieve that mammoth 2 light year journey in about 200 years assuming we will be able to reach speeds of up to 1/100th of light ... It means the people on board either need to be in cryo-chambers or have children three of four generations to continue the journey. Life in outer space because of the lack of gravity will leave our bodies feeble so having babies in space might be difficult ... This is reality of where we are ... Scientifically speaking ...
that is what I tell to those who wish to see the farthest reaches of the universe ... Not what I said earlier ... What I said earlier is what I say to those who think space exploration is about benefit to mankind ... I said the only benefit ... Foreseeable .... That is ... Is mining other planets and moons ...
knowledge is useless if it has no moral or functional value ... People trying to find out what happened ... Is a nice to have ...
meh.. just because we don't have a way to travel there yet doesnt mean we never would. according to the laws of physics, one can make it to a place light years away without the need for traveling for years.
and diwana pal, i dont know what to say to you. you need education.
as for the good old "moral values" standby, the day religious people stop killing each other over their morality ideas, we can get started on it.

The point being made is not whether we would ever reach the stars ... The point being made is ... That the benefits do not outweigh the costs at the moment ... And that much is true.
And if you are talking about going through wormholes ... That would be suicide ... And besides we would have to get to a wormhole first .... Travelling to warp or doing some other crazy feat will require lots and lots of energy ...
the benefits do not outweigh the costs? in whose opinion? some guy who is hoping to go to heaven or someone who is a career scientist?
i'd say this definitely has more merit that someone selfishly spending time on prayer etc. in the hopes of making it to heaven.
Peace queer
Do you think I wouldn't notice the switch ... ;) ...
We were comparing benefit to mankind of space travel vs cost to mankind of space travel ... not benefit to mankind of space travel vs benefit to mankind of prayer ... the latter can only be judged once we arrive at mutually agreeable terms ... which I know we will not ...
Now leave the sophistry and kindly explain how my statement about benefit vs cost is wrong ...
i'm saying your idea of "benefit to mankind" is based out of fairytales and imaginary laws of making it to heaven. and not in touch with the reality of this universe. hope that helps with the perspective of the post.
So which of my ideas of benefit to mankind can you specifically reference against which specific fairytale?
And you speak of “imaginary laws of making it to heaven” - what laws are these?
What is the reality of this universe that you believe will be harnessed from space travel and benefit us in a way that justifies the cost? Come on … don’t throw pebbles from a distance … engage … Like Jean-Luc Picard …

Which laws of physics are you talking about that can make it to a place light years away without the need for traveling for years?
Not true. It does take two to three years minimum for an unmanned object to get to distance far away like reaching Mars.

The education I got was very straightforward and simple.
Use logic and common sense.
You lack both and are living in superstitious life or make belief so called scientific world.
If that makes you happy then so be it.
as for the good old "moral values" standby, the day religious people stop killing each other over their morality ideas, we can get started on it.
The day so called scientists stop fooling the people on this earth and stop brain washing and sending people to suicidal missions in space.... other smart people will take a sigh of relief.

First, it doesn't have to be a manned mission. Maybe one day we will be able to do so but I still find the image feed of those space probes way more inspirational than listening to some scholar who has nothing new to say. Second, if space exploration is not about benefit to mankind then neither is anything else. The only people benefiting humanity are those who are providing food and shelter to others. That is what we need to survive, everything else is a luxury. One doesn't even need religion to survive. Even THAT is a luxury! Last but not least, it is all perspective, buddy. I can choose to look at the positives or negative of anything. Let's look at the funding space exploration gets vs what religious and political organizations get. Let's compare what inventions have been brought forward from the space exploration research work. Let's compare the charity work done by religious and political organizations and size it up against the funding they do get!

I have no problem in comparing two different things ... But we need to agree on mutual terms of reference ... I was trying to keep this conversation limited to economics ... But if you want to diversify that is fine ... But let's agree on how we can measure the benefits of things like religion first.
gold.. will wait for end of the days, 4 horsemen, messiah, dajjal, kalki etc, but cant understand the space-time continuum or the merit in exploring the world we live in.
