The Top 10 Richest in India are:

  1. Mukesh Ambani $32 billion
  2. Lakshmi Mittal $30 billion
  3. Anil Ambani $17.5 billion
  4. Azim Premji $14.9 billion
  5. Shashi & Ravi Ruia $13.6 billion
  6. KP Singh $13.5 billion
  7. Savitri Jindal $12 billion
  8. Sunil Mittal $8.2 billion
  9. Kumar Birla $7.8 billion
  10. Gautam Adani $6.4 billion

The number of billionaires in India nearly doubled to 52 in 2009 and their combined net worth reached $276 billion, or a quarter of the country’s GDP, the India Rich List published by Forbes magazine revealed. A rebounding stock market and a robust economy were behind this turnaround after a year of crisis when their fortunes had fallen

Mukesh Ambani, who heads Reliance Industries, India’s largest company by market capitalisation, remained at the top of the wealth chart with a net worth of $32 billion, a rise of 54 percent from the last year’s level.

Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who made his fortune in the West but still retains his Indian passport, came second with a wealth of $30 billion. The third place went to Mukesh’s estranged brother, Anil, whose net worth rose 40 percent to $17.5 billion.

“This year’s list shows yet again that when conditions in the financial markets and the economy are right, India has the scale and resources to produce billionaires faster than most of the countries on earth,” Naazneen Karmali, India Editor of Forbes Asia and Mumbai bureau manager for Forbes magazine, said.

The substantial jump in net worths is evidence that entrepreneurial capitalism is alive and kicking in India, Indrajit Gupta, Editor of Forbes India, said: “What’s more, the growth in wealth creation has been broad-based. Entrepreneurs from a wide variety of sectors comprise the list.”

Though the top ten positions remain largely unchanged, there are some shifts in fortunes across the list. Sunil Mittal has moved down from Number 4 to Number 8 and Azim Premji has moved up to Number 4 position. The Ruia brothers with a net worth of $13.6 billion have made it to number 5 this year. Adi Godrej has moved out of the top 10 to the number 12 position. Savitri Jindal, Nonexecutive Chairwoman of O.P. Jindal Group, at a net worth of $12 billion this year has made it to number 7 on the list – she is one of only six women on the list. The richest newcomers are two brothers from Torrent Power – Sudhir and Samir Mehta, ranked 23 at $2.02 billion.

Another notable mention is Nandan Nilekani who has stepped down from Infosys board and is now a part of government. He ranks 43 with a net worth of $1.25 billion. Southern India’s TV king, Kalanithi Maran, ranked 20, almost doubled his net worth to $2.3 billion from $1.2 billion. His Sun TV Network operates in four states in the south, a region that accounts for one-quarter of India’s population and one-third of those with television in their homes. Forbes Asia features a cover story on Maran.

The Forbes India cover story highlights how 2009 has been a turnaround year for the rich in India. The list is an indicator of how India’s billionaires have done better than their counterparts in other parts of the world. The story highlights interesting differences between the rich in India and China. The 100 richest Indians are worth $276 billion; their Chinese counterparts have a net worth of $170 billion. The three richest Indians are worth $79.5 billion. It takes 24 Chinese billionaires to be worth $80 billion.

Forbes India - India Has 52 Billionaires; Mukesh Ambani Richest

Interesting!
We only have Mian Muhammad Mansha with US$4.4 Billion.

However, i think Pakistan's unofficial richest man would definitely have more wealth than all the fortune of Top10 Indian Billionaires combined. He also happens to be the current president of the country. :D

This is another evidence that the gap between rich and poor in India is widening.

That gap can be very easily be narrowed if the Rich can share some of their wealth with fellow Indians…:k:

Re: India Has 52 Billionaires; Mukesh Ambani Richest

Its very funny this thread
Indians are rejoicing the billionaires but what about 600 million poors of India who do not have the acces to a simple TOILET???

Should we not talk about them? Can't indian billionaires spare some money to buy the poor Indians (outcasts, ashoot, untouchables) 600 million toilets instead of buying bungelows in USA or the West??

Re: India Has 52 Billionaires; Mukesh Ambani Richest

What is more interesting is
25% of Indias GDP is hold by 100 People

It's same in Pakistan and many other countries. Something should be done about it but i guess those billionaires are helping average Indians by emplyong hundreds of thousands of people.

We had 7 billionaires according to the list updated back in March 2008
List of Pakistanis by net worth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Things might have changed since then as India had 26 billionaires according to this list. Terrorist attacks and GFC might have affected many people in Pakistan so i won’t be surprised if Mansha is the only billionaire in Pakistan alongwith Zardari. Zardari might be the only Pakistani whose wealth has actually increased since county’s situation worsened.

these billionaires represent massive wealth creation, job creation, and gdp contribution...mostly self-made or within one generation of entrepreneurship.

despite your crocodile tears, these accomplishments are not nullified by an inadequate quantum of toilets in the country.

in the distant future when there exists even one pakistani corporation or entrepreneur worth mentioning, you may understand why it is a point of pride.

according to which source?

the forbes billionaire list has never featured a pakistani.

If you don’t consider Wikipedia a source then what can i do??? I am sure you won’t find that in times of India or “The HINDU” but i can provide one more source, if you don’t wanna believe it then it’s upto you.

Read the full article and you will know why there aren’t too many Pakistani billionaires.

And another one is wikipedia (ever heard of it???)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o…of_billionaires

The following is a list of known U.S. dollar billionaires in 2009 as of March 2009, listed by nationality, and grouped by continent. The lists of billionaires is compiled annually by the Forbes Magazine. The list excludes heads of states whose wealth is tied to their position (see list of heads of government and state by net worth).

Wikipedia is actually more recent as it was updated in March 2009, as i said before that things might have changed since then as political situation in Pakistan might have affected a few people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o…is_by_net_worth

Mian Muhammad Mansha $4.6 Billion
Anwar Pervez $1.5 Billion
Nawaz Sharif $1.4 Billion
Saddaruddin Hashwani $1.1 Billion
Nasir Schon $1 Billion
Abdul Razzak Yaqoob $1 Billion

Read my posts above and come down on earth, don't jump up and down like a monkey.

Not that these billionaires have turned Pakistan into richest in the world but they do exist.

[note]Wikipedia and teeth.com are not authentic reliable resources to ascertain the wealth of billionaires. These are mere speculations without proof. As far as wikipedia is concerned, the information contributed is by the users of web site. While sometimes you get some interesting information regarding a topic but the reliability is always questionable. Therefore wikipedia is never quoted as a reference web site.

As far as forbes list is concerned, it does not take in to account the hidden wealth of the wealthy people. They rely mostly on open market capitalisation of the assets of known wealthy people whose source of wealth is known and legally declared. The forbes list of world billionaires is compiled every year and according to this list nobody not even Mian Mansha of Pakistan was ever included.

Search the World’s Billionaires 2009 – Forbes.com

It means no one officially ever was/is a billionaire in Pakistan…[/note]

They may not be reliable sources but it’s also well known that people like Mansha are billionaires and they have legally declared it. I don’t know why it’s not in forbes but if you search using the link you have provided above, only 21 Indians are listed whereas the actual number is 52.

The webpage on Wikipedia says it has taken the list from Forbes … but when you check the actaul list of Forbes, Mansha is not there on 99 …infact you can make it out that it is a hoax because there is more than one entry for 98 so technically there cannot be any 99 !!! As regards to him and the others being billionaries, it is possible that they are but they haven’t been identified by Forbes.

As regards to number of Indians in teh lsit … Wikipedia give the reference of March 2009 list, which had 21 … but teh new list give a total of 52 … here is the latest list …
India’s Richest - Forbes.com

As per Forbes explaination highest ever recorded Wealth of Mian Mansha was last year after he sold around 700 million dollars worth of his MCB portfolio to Malaysian bank and before the stock market crash was 1.6 billion dollars. But as the stock market collapsed and Pak ruppe devalued at the time of compilation of the report his net worth was 930 million dollars. So actually he was officially a billionaire once but not at the time of compilation of the list. Followint is the article from March lthis year:

Pakistan’s Almost First - Forbes.com

Billionaires List
Pakistan’s Almost First
Devon Pendleton, 03.12.09, 05:00 PM EDT
Forbes Magazine dated March 30, 2009

When Mian Mohammed Mansha, chairman of Pakistan’s respected MCB Bank, sold 57% of his MCB shares to Malaysia’s Maybank, he had big plans for the resulting $896 million cash windfall. Chief among them: taking his Nishat Group conglomerate of textile, cement and insurance interests public on the London Stock Exchange. Mansha had reason to be confident. In addition to his tidy cash pile, the value of his public portfolio held through Nishat Group unofficially granted him the title of Pakistan’s first billionaire, with an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion.

Don’t look for an IPO anytime soon. While Mansha’s MCB selloff was well timed–shares are down 67% to date–the rest of his empire was similarly battered. His sizable public stakes, which include two of Pakistan’s largest textile mills, a cement plant and $600 million (assets) Adamjee Insurance, all dropped an average 76% on the Karachi Exchange from May 5 to Feb. 13, the date we locked in fortunes. A 13% decline of Pakistan’s rupee against the dollar didn’t help. Mansha’s fortune has been nearly halved, to $930 million.

That would be $181.5 billion. I can't believe Zardari has that much money, however gotten.

Re: India Has 52 Billionaires; Mukesh Ambani Richest

Big difference between Mukesh Ambani and Laxmi Mittal. Mittal made all his money himself, Ambani inherited it.
