Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

Name of Punjab is due to 5 Rivers… Jehlum, Chenab, Satluj, Ravi and Biyas.

Then the Sikh religion that flourished in Punjab (that is native to Punjab) have 5 Ks as religious symbols.

I just read that there are Punj-Peer (5 Saints) of Punjab, that are also mentioned in Heer Waris Shah. Any ideas who these 5 peer (Saints) are?

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

Shouldn't it be teen (whatever word for 3, teen is in punjabi) aab since it is only 3 rivers now.

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

Overall Punjab (India+Pakistan) got 5 rivers. If I'm not mistaken Indian Punjab still have these 5 rivers (i.e. 5 rivers still flow in Indian territory)

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

Do you know if there is any relation between this and the presence of five rivers or if it had any influence on the religion?

I think @the kaur may be able to shed some light on this.

No, the credit of 5 k’s goes to hazrat aala aurangzeb, who killed one of the gurus, and turned a whole sikh nation as a jaani dushman of Muslims. The top guru of that time commanded that a real khalsa will always wear the five K’s till a single Muslim is still alive in India.

Add to this list, gurdwara punja sahib

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

How come? Any source about Guru ordering that?

If Sikhs were that Anti-Muslim, how come they retain poetry of Muslim poets in their Garanth?

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

May be panjeeri as well :hehe:

Retaining poetry might be part of punjabi culture, also could be from guru nanak times. 5 k’s entered during the time of 10th guru who created the order of Khalsa.

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

there is a collection of du'aas i think which is called "Punjatan Paak"?

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

The concept of Punjtan Pak is Persian (I think so). Its not dua, its 5 personalities.. the prophet (SAW), Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Fatima (RA), Hazrat Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Hussain (RA).

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

thank you for the info...

oh i see...mujhe to ilm nahiiN thaa...paak hastiyaaN, alHamdolillah.

mujhe kuchh yaad paRtaa hai k is naam se ek booklet thii jis meN shaayad du'aayeN darj thiiN yaa Punjatan Paak ke naam se kuchh qisse, kahaaniyaaN thiiN. wallaho aalam bissawaab.

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

Garanth is just not a common poetry book. Its holy scripture. Apart from that, enmity between Sikh and Muslims (among masses) was never severe from Aurnagzeb’s time till partition. There were wars for crown and rule, but still there were some good terms in between the communities that encouraged Mr Jinah to offer them to be part of Pakistan.

This is the history behind adapting 5 ks, though it says that it was adapted after Aurangzeb’s oppression, but it doesn’t say that Guru ordered or advocated any anti-Muslim sentiments.

The 5 K’s

This is another article about philosophy of each of 5 items. Interesting to note the philosophy of kesh (hair) and turban:

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

There is this punj surah at our home. I never checked which surah it has. probably Surah Yaseen, Surah e Mulk, Surah e Rahman might be there.

Then there is probably 5 bibiyon ki kahani (though I remember its 10 bibiyon ki Kahani). Punch kaniya is also popular ladies from Mahabaharat and Ramayan and pouplar in Hinsuism.

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

agreed....

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

I think fight with mughals (Aurangzeb) is being considered here as fight with Islam as theology which is incorrect. Guru Gobind Singh intiated Khlasa but that was never intended against Islam.

Punj Pyare were the first five soldiers of Khalsa, if I remember right, they were from Lahore, Amritsar, Patna, Nanded and Bidar

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

The fifth river I believe is Indus. At some stage there were seven rivers including saraswati. Not so sure about five peers.

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

Indus has been considered as somewhat sea (like the terminology Sindh Saagar.. as also referred by Aitzaz Ahsan). 5 rivers refers to tributaries of Indus.

Punjab region - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name of the region is a compound of two Persian words [SUP][6]](Punjab - Wikipedia)[/SUP] and was introduced to the region by the Turkic Muslim conquerors of India and more formally popularized during the Mughal empire. Punjab literally means “(The Land of) Five Waters” referring to the following rivers: the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas.[SUP][7]](Punjab - Wikipedia)[/SUP] All are tributaries of the Indus River, the Jhelum being the largest.

Re: Importance of '5' in Punjab's culture

^ if you see the map, Beas seems to become satluj after covering a short distance

Re: Importance of ‘5’ in Punjab’s culture

then how come it counts as 7 with Sarswati in picture?

I think Beas and Satluj have different head overs as per the map.

The Beas River ( Hindi: ब्यास, Punjabi: ਬਿਆਸ, Sanskrit: विपाशा ‘Vipasha’ ) is a river in north India. The river rises in the Himalayas in central Himachal Pradesh, India, and flows for some 470 kilometres (290 mi) to the Sutlej River in the Indian state of Punjab.[SUP][1]](Beas River - Wikipedia)[/SUP]
