It's a two way street, IF you are not appreciated for your efforts and the feelings are not mutual then it's not worth it. But again it all goes to the context these words were said. Some times people say things in anger which they normally wouldn't, under normal circumstances.

^ That is how relationships are. Note it these rules do not apply across the board, When it comes to family and close loved ones. You may love a friend as a FRIEND to bits, but this love can not be compared with love for your family. You will never stop loving a family member for his/her flaws, but there is a limit in friendship.

That's why I said it's a two way street, give respect and value to efforts to gain some in return. One sided respect/value and efforts are meaningless. You can only compromise on issues if other party is also willing to show the same attitude and acknowledging your compromises.
