Spy Chief: Syria War Attracting al-Qaeda Sympathizers

In testimony to the British parliament today, MI5 chief Andrew Parker confirmed a growing number of “al-Qaeda sympathizers” from the United Kingdom have gone to Syria to fight alongside them.
Parker told the parliament that current estimates are that “low hundreds” of British Islamist fighters are currently on the ground in Syria, involved in nation nation’s civil war.
British officials have previously put the estimate much lower, in the dozens instead of hundreds. Parker warned that the contracts being made by the fighters overseas could be a long-term threat.
That’s because after the Syrian Civil War ends, or simply ceases to be the “fashionable” war among Islamists, such fighters will return home with British citizenship and British passports, and ties with some of al-Qaeda’s top regional leaders.

Why should Britain revoke their citizenship? They should be punished under their laws, why should other countries pay for the actions of these 'Brits'?

The Muslim community in the UK is mainly Sunni and many of them love the idea of fighting in a jihad against what many of them see as infidels. Many Muslims here are often of a Pakistani heritage and are more susceptible to an idea of an Islamic state than many Pakistan born Muslims.

Well, let them become stateless...or if not when they come back charge them with terrorism and lock them for life.

You can't revoke their citizenship if they are born in the UK, as for prosecuting them for terrorist offences then opinions will vary even on this site whether they are terrorists or freedom fighters. In my opinion they are misguided youth being manipulated by those who have their own agenda.

UK should also do some introspection to find out why so many of its citizens are becoming extremists.
THIS ! Its like a growing phenomenon.. I believe media is playing a major role in provoking people or vaious origins and religions against each other .. and ofcourse we cant deny that Britian's role in supporting America is also not getting the government any accolades either.
Also I believe , when something is happening in large numbers , the idea of prosecuting them becomes minimal , it becomes more of an issue of their own national policy and creating awareness amongst the people of all orgins what Birtain is doing to protect their interests ..

The USA, Great Britain and France are arming the Syrian 'rebels' against President Assad's army. Should Prime Minister Cameron have his citizenship revoked too?
I once questioned a newspaper as to why they continue to use the term Islamist when referring to terrorists and they didn't get back to me. Same question for the topic creator here, what is so Islamist about a terrorist?

I raised that issue with BBC and the OFCOM too and got a response. I got a few friends to send in a couple of complaints as well and we got a response from BBC that they will look into reducing the use of this terminology .. This was last year I think

Are these foreign fighters there to defend the poor people of Syria? Why did Bahrain not attract the attract the attention of the worlds jihadis when the shia majority were protesting for their freedom but were brutally suppressed by foreign Saudi forces.

Syria is attracting revolutionary guard and hezbollah fighters to support the shia minority govt. Why don't you mention that or cat got your tongue?
It is an irony that alawis have to baptized into shi'ism to satisfy iranian goals just like french commandos had to be "muslims" to go and clear out the rebels in makkah.
