I day dream while studying. I hate it. It makes my studying so inconsistent and very inefficient. I will think up stuff that I haven’t thought of in a long long time- only to catch a break. Also, it’s crunch time right now so can’t take vacations, long walks, all of that stuff not possible right now. I somehow need to will myself to spend 16 hours a day on studying and I need to do it well.
For those of you nerds out there, how do you keep your concentration for longer? Especially right before a big test. Any tips will be appreciated!

**make hourly progress chart...commit to say a certain amount of study every hour...check back after an hour and then draw a chart/graph...that might help...
...or simply, go to sleep so you won't at least day-dream! :D hehe**

I actually like Khalil’s suggestion , time and target yourself to complete some of the material , on an hourly basis .
Also , I think its natural that the demons will try to take your concentration off … just keep telling yourself that its just this hour that you are studing and focus .. after an hour take a break for a while and then get back to focusing yourself … its just about self training …
study loudly …so you keep hearing yourself it sort of helps keep the focus .. I used to do that and it helped me tremendously .. when it comes to studies , I have a concentration that lasts 40 seconds :hinna:

I am the same way, if i start reading my mind wont help me read at all. It would be some where else, making me fight with someone or having me sit next to a beautiful girl at sunset, Thats why i choose the major with more mathematical classes. I cant go to next step of problem i am solving, if my mind is some where else. My mind has to be with me at all times. This helps me focus.
I am assuming you r doing medical, I did have some classes where I had to read and understand the stuff. If i find my self loosing focus. I wud read a sentence, Translate it into urdu in my mind read it in urdu and then move to next sentence. This keeps me focused.

hmm yep phone's off while studying, no texting. Lappy=laptop?! if yes, I can't study without it. And I eat breakfast/lunch while studying so that doesn't work either :(
I've found there's nothing you can do until last minute panic kicks in. All distractions seem to vanish then and you're able to study for 20 hours straight.

I've a feeling that you have this habit but still somehow you manage in the end, people who are in this habit can produce better and can get good concentration only under pressure. Beside negative impact of this habit the positive side is that it saves from stress, tension and depression kind of stuff.
I can say all these things because i suffered from this and tried yoga, hypnotism and many other things but even could not perform them well because even before starting i started dreaming myself at the apex of these field:)
It is very hard to eliminate it suddenly may be you can do it in a long run but i hope thAt it'll not harm you much just need to make your will strong. A will that you must have to get to the destination then the suffering of the journey won't have that much impact on the results.
Some suggession
1. Try not to sit in front of books all day long rather make it in short span of time like 2 hours and then a break will increase productivity.
2. I also feel that after going into bed you take longer time to sleep, just make sure that try to make keep your brain empty, free from all kind of thoughts, try to do it as much as possible it is a good cure.

^yeah, I was okay with day dreaming and my ADD behavior throughout college but now when it's about life/death situations- i need to get rid of this stupidity. So annoying! I have no problems with sleep though, that's one thing that comes easy to me. My body never fails to disappoint me about falling asleep moments after i hit the bed, haha
I wish there was a duaa, since Ramadan is here it might help. Please Allah, pleaseeeee
Have you checked with the doctor to see if attention deficit factors in?
Secondly, nobody can study 16 hours a day... at least not without psychotropic drugs - and those have far worse side effects than this short-term benefit.
