How to Make flower Gajra at Home in the USA!
I want to wear Kajra in my hair/hands on my mehndi...but how do we make them at home here in the USA. I know we can order them through people but its soo damn expensive!
any recommendation of flowers? and instructions on how to make it?
thanks!
Re: How to Make flower Kajra at Home in the USA!
I have made some using carnations and roses.
I would cut the flower right where the stem starts.
Using a needle and thread (thicker than actual thread) I would just thread all the flowers together. I would pierce the part that is right below the petals (i don't know the name for this? lol) ... and just keep stringing along flowers until its long enough for what you want.
I added pearls to the flower as well. Go to a store like Michaels and you can find needles that have pearls at the end of them. Just stick the needles into the flower head. It comes out really pretty.

Carnations work really well. They last quite long so you don't have to worry about doing everything the morning of the mehndi. I made some for a friends mehndi and her clothes had accents of emerald green and we dyed some of the flowers....just buy white one spilt half and inch of the stem and put them in food colour. We just put a few of those and it turned out really nice.

^ I would go to a flower shop and just buy the flower you like! Practice making one kajra and see how long it lasts. You will have a better idea what to do then.
Ramsha is right that one of the major benefits of carnations is that they last for a really long time... you can easily make these before the actually mehndi day and not worry about them looking wilted/and or dead.
Go to a florist.. they prob know better than the rest of us. Ask them you are looking to buy little white flowers similar to jasmine and you want something that lasts longer and doesn't die instantly if they are not in water.
Good luck!
Re: How to Make flower Kajra at Home in the USA!
Oh I LOVE doing this and have gotten pretty good! I find carnations and miniature roses to be the best.
I stick the needle through the side of the sepal, rather than going through the center of the flower. To make the haar/gajra look extra thick and full, instead of just stringing one flower at a time, what I do is make it so that the flowers close to each other face in different directions, the petals facing outward, so very little of the green shows. It works really well. Avoid using heavy flowers like large roses.

Sahar Me too!!
I love making them, I do it for all the weddings in my family, and mini roses are lovely cause they sit so well
Re: How to Make flower Kajra at Home in the USA!
How do you store the gajras? Do they stay fresh for a day atleast if you make them ahead of time?
Re: How to Make flower Kajra at Home in the USA!
^I double a long piece of thread. I use the flower buds for the part of the necklace that will be around the neck. I keep them in damp cloth and refridgerate.
Re: How to Make flower Gajra at Home in the USA!
In the winter I store them in styrofoam boxes in the garage - I live in Toronto so its the right temp. In the summer I take a few ice packs and put them under the styrofoam. All the reading I've done says to keep them cool but over 35 degree F.
Re: How to Make flower Gajra/Phool Ka Haar at Home in the USA!
Would wrist corsages work as gajras? A few can be kept alongwith regular gajras for effect. What do you think?
They seem pretty easy to make:
