It's not jealousy as such ... I think they have lived a very different sort of life - a prudent life - where they have had to save every penny to give me and siblings a decent upbringing ... They can't or don't want to understand the idea of "living in the now" and it concerns them that we are be wasteful ... And I guess may be I should evaluate my contribution to them as well ...

Ignoring/overlooking can do wonders and make someones life hell lot easier and happier.

I don’t know if they’re jealous or not but they become very unhappy about our expenditures…whether it’s the house furnishing, new car, my child’s drama class, my clothes or school fee.

This reminds me of the first time my husband and I went shopping together..we had just gotten back from our honeymoon, and went to go buy some stuff for our apartment…towels, bathroom mats, linens etc…my MIL was spending a few days with us…when we got back from our shopping trip my husband said to her in a joking manner “dheko..aapki bahu ne kitna kharcha karwaadiya…aisay tho may kangla hojaonga”…when he left the room, my MIL gave me a very severe lecture about frivolous spending. Omg, I was so mortified and scared :sid:

It took me a couple of years and many such instances later to finally understand exactly what Psyah Bhaiya just said…she had lived a very prudent and financially strict life. The concept of pocket money or disposable income was very foreign to her, and so I learned to just let the comments and questioning looks pass.

Suppose you're visiting your inlaws wearing a designer lawn suit (for the first time in your life)...they ask you (including your FIL), "how much is this?" and because you're fasting you can't lie so you tell them the original price and after hearing the price your inlaws pass out. Then they show off their shopping skills boasting about their new 5 Indian blingy glitzy 90's fashion suits they bought in that 1 lawn suit's price.

What do you do in such situations? Do you carry on lying regardless of the roza?
