How many of you know girls who became housewives by choice? I’m not talking about the girls who got a degree in home economics or anthropology and then got married. I’m talking about girls with a serious degree (like business or mbbs or phd in something) without any other responsibilities such as children deciding to stay home and just enjoy married life for a year or two? Not even the ones who became doctors in pak and then dont really wanna go through the usmle process so they stay home or the ones who get pregnant right away. but maybe girls who were educated here? you know, the ones who probably had a good stable career going before they got married…do they typically choose to be housewives after marriage just because they can even though they worked so hard to obtain a higher education?
Re: housewife by choice?
I did .... and quite happily did so ... Coz i wanted to concentrate on my relationship and family and give time to myself and my new family.
Now , I am looking for a job , but not on the same terms as my degree or experience. Something that will just help me pass time by until i have kids ... but once i do .. inshallah ... i will prefer to give my time to my home ,kids and husband.

Re: housewife by choice?
I did..and Allhumdolillah, I am happy that I did. :) I was working for a big firm before marriage, but I didn't think twice about quitting when I knew I'd be getting married on so and so date. Like someone else mentioned, I wanted to make an easy transition in the new lifestyle, without worrying about work. I wanted to be able to get to know the in-laws, learn all the things that I rarely did before marriage, such as cooking etc. I am definitely glad that I made that decision - cos I know I have learned a lot in this time. Currently I have taken up some work part-time that allows me to telecommute and that's more than enough to keep me busy and pass my time.
Re: housewife by choice?
oh wow! that puts me at ease because I know a lot of women leave work etc for their children but I felt almost guilty when I wanted to be a housewife after marriage simply because I enjoy staying at home and relaxing. Probably because hubby doesn't have the same option and I thought I may regret the decision to quit everything a few months later when I start getting bored. hmm lets see what happens...
Re: housewife by choice?
U know the life may seem nice for a couple of months...but afterwards it REALLY gets to you not being abe to work or do something productive...at least htats how i feel...
Re: housewife by choice?
I think its important to stay at home and raise kids the proper way esp. in this day and age! Teach them your values and culture from when they are young, and then you won't feel guilty that you didn't have time for your kids when they needed you most. So yea i would like to stay home with the kids for the first couple of yrs, and then def. go back to work so I can feel that all that work i put into my education was worth it...lol

What are you saying that home economics and anthropology are not serious careers?
Re: housewife by choice?
I am one as well (with an MBBS degree back in the closet) and I plan to get back to work in a couple of years definitely IA :)
What are you saying that home economics and anthropology are not serious careers?
That's what I wanted to ask. Good question.

So now you don't want to concentrate on your relationship and family anymore?.. Sorry I'm lost here
Re: housewife by choice?
Whats wrong with being a housewife/homemaker?
Re: housewife by choice?
It's not easy to be a housewife and that's why I like it.
Re: housewife by choice?
if i wouldnt clear PLAB (God Forbid) or even if I do and I don't get the residency (which happens quite often for overseas doctors) I wouldn't have a choice but to be a housewife :(
but InshAllah I do plan to work. But would take a break when I would have kids. For giving your home and family time is of vital importance for their moral and social upbringing ! :)

I quit work after being in a corporate job for 9 years. And I was educated here in the US. I chose to stay home after the babies were born because I had the option. I don't regret it.
