Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Pakistan hockey is dying! Dependent on only few players! There has not been any districts hockey championship in Karachi for many years. There are fake clubs who only receives grants from the govt.

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Islah wants a complete overhaul of Pakistan hockey. He led Pakistan to Hockey World Cup glory in 1978. The same year Pakistan won the Champions Trophy and Asian Games Gold medals as well.

KARACHI: Former Pakistan hockey captain and coach Islahuddin Siddiqui Thursday called for complete overhauling of Pakistan hockey to revive the struggling sport. “We need a gigantic effort, reformatory steps and united country wide support to lift hockey with a five-year plan,” he told this agency in an interview.

“I am deeply disappointed with the performance of the team in the World Cup. The result in Germany forces you to imagine that our hockey future is bleak. But this is not true,” said Islahuddin, who was a member of 1971 and 1975 World Cup wining teams and led Pakistan to heights by winning the World Cup in 1978 in Buenos Aires (Argentina). “Pakistan can still achieve something in future if we work with dedication and from core of our hearts,” opined Islahuddin. He said foreign coaches can not revive fortunes of Pakistan hockey. “Home coaches could prove more affective for the national squads,” he said.

Islahuddin gave four major reasons for team’s dismal show at World Cup: lack of super fitness, weakness in defence, indifferent attitude and lack in forwards scoring ability. “Sometimes we play well in patches but that can not bring you among the top. You have to be consistent,” he pointed out. Pakistan started their World Cup campaign by whipping Japan 4-0 in the opener but were held to 4-4 and 2-2 draws by New Zealand and Spain. The Green Shirts lost 0-1 to Argentina and ended the pool by receiving a 0-3 thrashing at the hands of Australia. APP

Pak-Dutch 3-2

Tomorrow...the saturday...Pak will play against Eng for 5/6 position...

Aus-Kor 4-2...Australia through to the Final...

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Thats quite a result for Pakistan. They got a hammering thru Dutch hands in champions trophy. But inconsistency has to be eradicated.

5th place might not be a horror result after all.

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

^^ Like I said in one of my previous posts...let someone else shoot the PC...the variation worked...

PS: Never depend on 1 or 2 players... :)

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

That 3-2 result against Holland however pleasing shows that our hockey team is as unpredictable as our cricket team.

I don't think it's a question of lack of talent but one of stamina. Our players simply don't have the stamina to play 4 or 5 games in a week. And I don't understand why when a football world cup lasts almost a month, a hockey world cup has to be completed in 12 days. That's only to the advantage of the Europeans and Australians who are physically fitter than their Asian counterparts. I am not making any excuses here but I believe that if the games were more spaced out, our hockey team might have done better.

just my opinion

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

^it definitely is when you consider that Ptv did'nt even show some of the matches of pakistan in this world cup.besides pakistan team is not what it used to be,i was watching recording of 1994 world cup final which pak won, pakistan absolutely outplayed the holland team and could have won a lot easier than winning it on penalty strokes.i think that team had much more talent than this team, the likes shahbaz sr and shahbaz jr were one of the best forwards that the game has ever seen...and that team was fitter and more confident than this pakistani team which gets tired very quickly and is often nervous in tight stiuations.

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Atleast Pakistan should mantain its position among Top 5...

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

^
next time they should play for position 5…they excel in that…(Y) :shoaby:

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Pakistan meet England in 5/6 playoff today
Spain meet Korea in bronze medal match
Australia meet Germany in the final

Scores from yesterday

Pakistan beat Holland 3-2 (Pakistan led 2-0 at half-time)
England beat NZ 4-3
Australia beat Korea 4-2 (Korea led 1-0 at half-time!)
Germany beat Spain (2-2 after extra-time) 5-3 on penalties

I hope Germany beat Australia in the final

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

The 1994 forward line was unquestionably more talented but it still was not as good as the dream forward line of the early-mid 1980s Pakistan team - Samiullah (left out), Hanif Khan (left-in), Hassan Sardar (arguably the greatest centre-forward of all time), Manzoor Junior (right-in) and Kaleemullah (right-out)

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Yep its better then finishing at 12 like india..

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

^ i have seen shahbaz play in the 90 world cup and 94.he was awsome.also shahbaz jr in 94 was a treat to watch.wasim feroze was also good.the main problem with pakistan is that they just don't have the talent in the forward line that they used to,if shahbaz, hassan sardar were playing right now with no off-side rules they would be unstoppable.

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

^ I agree Shahbaz Ahmad (aka Shahbaz Senior) was an exceptional dribbler of the ball and perhaps in the same class as Hassan Sardar and Shahnaz Sheikh (present coach). I never got to see much of Shahbaz Junior but I believe he was very good too.

Shahbaz Ahmad

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Eng-Pak 0-0...49'

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

66' Ahmad is injured - this could be bad for PAK considering they have no Keeper in reserve today.Eng-Pak 0-0

Re: Hockey Worldcup 2006 - [Mönchengladbach, Germany]

Final result Eng-Pak 1-0…

Pakistan end up 6th in this tournament…

Bye…bye…Pakistan… :jhanda:
