Pakistan hockey team missed a golden chance to start the 25th Silver Jubilee edition of the coveted chanpions trrophy on a winning note when they failed to hold on to the two goals lead twice in the match against Australia in their opening match that ended in a 4-4 draw, played here at Amstelveen, Netherlands on Saturday .
From the start of the match Pakistan dominated the proceedings and made some dangerous inroads into the Aussies defence in 2nd and 3d minute. Left winger Sahbbir Hussain in 6th minute made a brilliant run down after snatching the ball from a defender and passed it to Mudaasir Ali Khan after beating the whole Aussies defense who scored the goal after beating goalie to make it 1-0. In 9th minute Jamie Dwyer missed an easy chance when Pakistani goalie Ahmed Alam was the only defender to beat . Jamie was to be taken out as result of a collision with Ahmed Alam .
Nadeem playing well had good shot at the goal defended by keeper Mark Hickman in 10th. Pakistan got it’s first short corner in 10th minute of rising ball that was well executed by Shoail Abbass put Pakistan 2-0 ahead in the match. Pakistan seemed to have slowed down as the Aussies reduced the lead in 14th minute when Schubert Grant initiated a brilliant move that ended with Grant scoring a suburb goal for beating Alam all ends up.
In 25th minute, Shabbir succeeded to get a short corner but Abbas’s flick was well saved by Aussie goalie by diving to his left. Pak spearhead Kashif Jawwad, unnecessarily trying to use reverse flick ,missed at least three chances. Pakistan mounted pressure for most of the time as Aussies looked a bit defensive in second part of the first half.
Pakistan had it’s 3rd short corner in 30th minute that was again very well placed in the right corner of the net by Abbas to make the score 3-1 that became Abbass’s 199th goal in International hockey. The Aussies like wounded tigers bounced back when Troy elder scored the 2nd goal by placing the ball into right corner of Alam in 32nd minute. The second half saw the score 3-2 in Pak favor.
The Aussies got their 2nd short corner of the match in 44th minute but that was well judged by Aalam. The Australian team however was a well combined team in the second half and put Pakistan under pressure for most of the time. Craig Vitcor missed an easy chance in 55th minute when he failed to beat goalie Alam who had no problem to save the soft push.
Kashif Jawwad committed a blunder of the match by not scoring when Rehan Butt had a brilliant run down along side the right flank and gave pass to Kashf who seemed completely out of touch and couldn’t beat the goalie. The Australian team was putting everything into it to score goals but missed number of chances.
Pakistan however was able to score 4th goal through Khalid Salim to put Pakistan ahead by 4-2 in 63rd minute on move initiated by right out Rehan Butt but the Aussies quickly scored the 3rd goal after a minute by a short corner through Deen Butler in 64th minute to make the score 4-3 . The Australia got their 5th short corner in the last minute when Grant Schbert scored the equalizer for Australia the in the last minute of the match to snatch from Pakistan what should have been a convincing victory .
The Australian coach Barry Dancer termed his team performance as disappointing. “ We allowed to much space to Pakistanis to exhibit their individual skills that put us under pressure but in second half we managed control to game. Pakistan being unpredictable side, put up a good show against us as compared to their performance in Australia in June this year, Dancer said .
Pakistan team coach Tahir Zaman said that our boys played well and I am pleased with their show despite the fact that they failed to hold on to the lead due to what Tahir called in-experience. “Our team is in rebuilding process and I am pleased that we are still in the run for matches to come. One should not take Argentina as easy opponents whom Pakistan face on Sunday in their second match, Tahir concluded.
