Squad announced…Nadeem skipper, Sohail and Waseem back in

18-member squad for Champions Trophy announced

LAHORE: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) on Monday re-appointed Muhammad Nadeem skipper and included veteran penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas and half-back Waseem Ahmad in the 18-member squad named for the forthcoming Champions Trophy to be held in Amsterdam, Holland, from August 16 to 24.

The Geo TV channel has meanwhile reported that Captain Sarwar has announced his retirement from the hockey team.

  • **SQUAD: **Ahmed Alam, Salman Akbar (goal-keepers), Sohail Abbas, Ali Reza and Zeeshan Ashraf (full-backs), Ghazanfar Ali, Muhammad Saqlain, Waseem Ahmad, Dilawar Hussain, Adnan Masood (half backs), Rehan Butt, Mudassar Ali Khan, Kashif Jawwad, Muhammad Nadeem (captain), Muhammad Shabbir Hussain, Sameer Hussain, Khalid Salim, Muhammad Asim (forwards). Abdul Rasheed Junior (manager), Tahir Zaman (coach), Shahid Ali Khan (assistant coach), Qamar Ibrahim (video analyst) Waqar Salim (doctor) are the team officials.

“The trio –– Nadeem ND, Sohail and Waseem – have been recalled after considering their past performances and services for Pakistan,” said PHF President Muhammad Aziz Khan. However, the trio was fined Rs 100,000 each for disciplinary violations. “Lenient view was taken in the larger interest of hockey and because the players regretted their mistake,” he added.

The three players skipped Pakistan’s tour of Australia last month, playing instead in the German league without permission from the PHF. Nadeem returned early before the tour of Australia when the PHF called him but he was not allowed to appear for the trials to be picked for the team. Their absence resulted in Pakistan’s poor performance Down Under.

But chief selector Akhtar Rasool was confident that despite the recent upheavals in Pakistani hockey, the national team could go on to a good show in international competitions. Pakistan, three-time Olympic and four-time world champions, have suffered in international hockey of late, finishing a worst-ever fourth at the Asian Games in Busan, South Korea last year. **“We have done our best to prepare a strong team out of the best men available. The return of Nadeem, Sohail and Waseem will definitely lift the team and we have complete faith in Rasheed Junior, Tahir Zaman and Shahid Ali Khan”, **Akhtar said. “I admit that the Champions Trophy will be an uphill task but Pakistan can beat Australia, Germany, India,” he added.

Pakistan will face Olympic champions The Netherlands, world champions Germany, India, Australia and Argentina in the 25th event. Pakistan is also to compete in the Asia Cup this September in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Thanx for sharing, you need to fix the url just delete the coma (,) at the end.

jind that url isn't correct and secondly deleting the comma doesn't make a difference that url isn't a registered domain

I believe the URL is www.fieldhockey.tv and not www.hockeyfield.tv

Pakistan squad a balanced one: Tahir

KARACHI, July 22: Coach Tahir Zaman said on Tuesday that Pakistan hockey squad for Champions Trophy is a balanced combination and he was looking ahead for the team to do well in Amstelveen, The Netherlands.

“This is a balanced combination and I am optimistic about team’s showing,” Tahir Zaman said in an interview. “Team was strengthened with the return of Muhammad Nadeem, Sohail Abbas and Waseem Ahmed,” he maintained.

**“They are all important and key players for the team and their return has boosted the morale of the team,” a qualified FIH grade-I coach Tahir said. **

He said besides penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas they have also prepared Ghazzanfar Ali Khan and Ali Raza for short corners.

“Pakistan definitely are a better side than the one which toured Australia and I expect the boys to do well,” Tahir said.

34-year-old Olympian Tahir Zaman was confident that his team would reach the victory rostrum. “This is the toughest event of international hockey and any team can beat any on a given day,” he added.

He negated the impression that former Pakistan captain Muhammad Sarwar was forced to take retirement by top officials of Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

“It was all emotional talk. After so much attachment with the sport it happens,” Tahir said.

He said the whole team applauded and clapped for Sarwar and event PHF chief General Aziz Khan paid tributes for his contribution to the sport.

He said hockey is a high speed ball control game and physical fitness is very vital. “Keeping in the mind we included a younger player in the team,” he said.

To another question regarding keeping aging goal-keeper Ahmed Alam in the team, he said goalie got longer life in hockey as compared other players of the team.

Commenting on the strength of the team he said scoring field goals as well as conversion of penalty corners are both important in the modern hockey.

“We are expecting a couple of goals from forwards as well from penalty corner strikers” Tahir Zaman pointed out.

**To a question about induction of little known forward Muhammad Asim in the line-up, he said Asim has played for Pakistan Juniors as well as for Pakistan Whites in the triangular series last year.

“He has shown sparkle and is promising player and we have high hopes from him”,** Pakistan coach said. Asim, he said was a utility forward, who can play as left in, left winger and at centre forward position.

**Pakistan hockey team will play a couple of warm-up games against host The Netherlands before their 25th Champions Trophy, said Tahir. He said these games will be played on Aug 12 and 13 and Pakistan team will leave for Amsterdam between Augt 8-10 to feature in the premier six-nation contest. **

Besides, Pakistan and hosts and Olympic and Champions Trophy winners The Netherlands, Australia, Argentina, India and reigning world champions Germany will be battling for the top honours.

He said these two games will help us in build-up for the Champions Trophy because the Dutch are considered strongest team of the competition.-APP

Spot on Tahir Zaman. He got it everything right. I hope Pakistan wins the Champions Trophy. It’s been over 4 years we haven’t won major Hockey Competition. It’s 'bout time!

As Zaman mentioned, the Dutch are the best team to be defeated; and I would be shock if Netherlands lost this year. Followed by the Dutch, the World Champions Germany are the best team in the league and favs.

**Finishing third will be enough for me: Pakistan coach **](http://www.planetfieldhockey.com/PFH/Item-View-8333-0)

Lahore Aug. 10. With tough competition on the cards for the top slot in the Champions Trophy commencing next week, Pakistan hockey coach Tahir Zaman is eyeing the third slot in the six-team competition.

``I have a realistic approach and reaching the victory podium in the toughest event will be enough for me,‘’ the coach was quoted as saying in a leading Pakistani daily on Saturday.

Although there is a lot of furore in the media around the world on Germany’s decision to field its second-string team in the six-nation event, Tahir said he was not aware of the development.

Pakistan is scheduled to meet Australia on August 16 and Argentina the next day. Host Netherlands is next on the schedule on Aug. 19. After a day’s rest, Pakistan clashes with Germany on Aug. 21 and the last league match is against archrival India on Aug. 22.

Before this, Pakistan plays a two-Test series against Netherlands. Tahir did not want to disclose the strategy for the two Tests and added that a victory would boost the morale of the team.

``No coach in the world can predict victory at any tournament,‘’ he said.

Asked why he had not set the top position as the target like former manager/coach Shahnaz Sheikh, Tahir said he did not believe in making tall claims as it would do nothing except raise unnecessary expectations.

Asked if a drubbing like the one Pakistan received at the hands of New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester last year when it lost 1-7 could force the team to fourth or fifth place due to his `realistic approach,’ he said: ``There is a possibility it could happen.‘’

Tahir said the return of three key players — Mohammad Nadeem, Sohail Abbas, and Waseem Ahmad — would improve the confidence of his side, but admitted that the trio would be under severe pressure to perform.

The three players missed Pakistan’s tour to Australia as they had gone to Germany to play in the league there despite being asked by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to stay in the country for the training camp.

Nadeem was dropped for the tour down under although he returned during the middle of the season while Sohail and Waseem were included in the squad after fines.

About the allegations levelled against him by axed defender Tariq Imran, he said he should not be blamed for the selection process as he was not the sole authority for choosing players.

Tariq, a PTCL player, had alleged that Tahir wants to eliminate PTCL players from the team and is promoting players from his own department, National Bank.

``We have PHF, selection committee and team manager. The coach cannot get his blue-eyed boys into the squad,‘’ Tahir said, adding that Tariq had in fact criticised the PHF and not him.

Tahir said disciplinary action should be taken against forwards, Sameer Hussain and Rehan Butt, who had a heated exchange during the practice session in Karachi.

``Yes, punishment should be given to those who breach the code of conduct. I was away from the camp to attend my sister’s marriage when the incident happened while manager Abdul Rashid Junior tackled the issue,‘’ he said.
