Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
Here is an article published in 1946 which shows, how people felt for this discrimination.

Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
The concept is still alive to certain extent in rural landscape. Recently I was in the UP village in central UP where Dalits had separate handpump in there side of village and Yadavs/Lodis had different on their side. Hindus have a word "Mleccha" for scavengers, meat eaters etc, Muslims used to eat beef hence they were "mleecha" according to high caste hindu.
Later Indira started policy of "pyaoo" at railway stations manned by Dalits and other lower caste hence this system of seprate water at public place has vanished. Casteism has limited appeal in Cities but its roots are intact in rural India where 70 percent of India lives:)
Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
What was the idea behind 'Pyaoo'? I mean, how it worked?

Pyaauu means a source of drinking water still some old buildings are found at small stations, The government policy was to have only single source of water, few earthen pots manned by some lower caste to provide water to every traveller, now every railway station has taps and everyone uses it, forward castes still either carry their water or use mineral water, more for hygienic reasons than religious reasons
Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
I once met some one from Hyderabad, India and he said that there’s segregation of people in India. Like shudars cannot live in the areas of Brahmins, similarly muslims cannot live in separate localities. Therefore most of the castes are confined in their own areas. Is this phenomena prevalent in some areas or most of India?
The Hindu : Of Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
Stepping in next was Sahitya Akademi award winning Punjabi author Ajeet Cour. She read out her short story “Happy New Year” translated into English by Khushwant Singh.
“We all are so used to black comedy. So I thought let there be black humour of tolerance today”, said the writer of “Khana Bados”. She continued, "This occasion reminds me of a childhood incident. While we were in a train to India after Partition, I as a child was quite perplexed to see at the railway stations separate drinking water facilities for Hindu and Muslim communities. Seeing Hindu Pani' and Muslim Pani’, I asked my mother, is there any `Muslim Hawa’ also"? And, there arose a collective sigh from the audience.

Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
Ali things may have got better with the paasage of time as we see that there is no such distinction followed in western countries, where Muslims and Hindu work together and as the kaur mentioned Indian governments introduced systems like payo to eradicate this, but again we can make all good laws and arrangements to promote harmony, but biases rooted down in pshchology of human beings can not be easily done away with

What I mentioned is what I heard from some one 10 years ago.
Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
Just as an aside, Ali_Syed you will see in abt post 3 I have criticized the way Muslims were and probably still treated with respect to housing discrimination in Mumbai. Wrong is wrong - no matter who does it.
Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
I think, present day India is more different than the one 60 years ago. Muslim and Hindu pani is also diminishing but certainly it is issue in few parts of India. Time will change many thing. A moderate India may be favorable in the interest of moderate Pakistan and vice versa. ![]()
Re: Hindu Pani, Muslim Pani
I havent seen the hindu and muslim pani issue in the south in cities and towns in my lifetime. It was probably there 60-40 years ago. In the villages, it may still be there. I used to do a little social work in college. In villages, I have seen hindus who are in majority discriminate against muslims, hindus against minority dalits, muslim majority village against hindus, muslims against dalits and even dalit majority villages intimidating other caste people. Discrimination is not consigned to any one community. Unfortunately, across religious and caste barriers, everybody seems to be eager to indulge in it given a chance. What we need is iron clad secular laws that makes sure every one is treated decently and equally irrespective of what their religious, cultural and community may say. This is the 21st century for Gods sake.

^ I think educating the masses would do the job in the long run.

An honest post. Spoken like a True Progressive. You make the best case for a secular govt ( with iron clad secular laws).
