What is the idea behind this. I’ve read and watched in some movies / dramas based on partition that on railway stations there were separate water taps or the men selling water chanting slogans ‘Muslim Pani’ or ’ Hindu Pani’. Also in villages, where different communities lived together, there were separate wells of water for each communities.
Living for centuries together, what lead to this discrimination? Was this required by religion?
Lived in city throughout - so there was no Hindu/Muslim Pani issue. I have to admit in our housing society, there were no muslims. The as_h_l_ builder did not sell to muslims. So in a housing society of ~ 150 flats, no muslims. And if you factor in the whole nagar, with about 6 societies each, no muslims to best of my knowledge. This was way back when. Wen I go back home, I dont see any muslims in the housing societies.
So while no separate panis, discrimination is alive and well.
In mumbai they still have such societies........
Few people are more into these things like brahmin, marawari, jains and gujratis.....
few even dont drink water at muslim's house but may be due to non-vegetarian habit of muslims......:D
Still some people dont like muslims in their homes....Though where i live in maharashtra there is no such discrimination against any one...
Even Dalits are very much integrated with majority hindus........
I personally observed, back at my grandparents home, we still share wall with a Hindu family. We sent them siwayyan / halwa on Eid / Shab barat and biryani/haleem as niaz of Muharram. They sent us sweets on Diwali.
There was a time, when we kinda avoid eating sweets from them, but our Dadi used to advice us that read kalma over food and eat by saying Bismillah. So people in small towns have more tolerance compared to metropolis.

The man speaks the truth. Got to agree about societies in Mumbai.
I did not have any muslim classmates the whole of my schooling years. College was a sea - you just hung out with few people you knew. Engg. school, there was only one muslim - he had a Hindu mother and muslim father. So never rubbed shoulders with muslims while in India. In those days at least, muslims were either very rich or ver poor in Mumbai.
Integration is unavoidable...........:D
You will be surprised in my real life i dont have a single muslim friend...........:D
All my friends are hindu...If we respect each other as a human being then i think thats enough.....
Some pseudo secularists always ask for more....then the problem begins........:D
You know even peoples working for shiv sena and BJP like hindu parties have good personal relations with muslims......:)
But both people have intolerance towards each other as a community....
Shatrughna Sinha the film actor and BJP leader has a mooh boli sister in pakistan(daughter of Gen.Zia -ul-Haq)

I know about this gen Zia and Shatroghan Sinha story, but the Mard e Momin (Auranghzeb of Pakistan) might knew that there are no mung bola rishtas in Islam :D
Did not know abt BJP Shiv Sena having good relations with muslims - that is cool. i can say that the circle in which I move, we dont speak ill of any community. Also, the younger generation coming out of India is far more open minded - at least the kids who come here - they are far too busy with work and moving up - no place for hate.
OK Hattori San - good night. (I may be one of the "pseudo-secularists you are tali=king abt though!!)
Muqawee, that is cool to have a hindu neighbor across the wall. Looks like you got your kindness from your grandparents.
