Good for Maya Khan for showing something better than her previous attempts ... A person can change or improve or become wiser ... I'm a strong believer of that ...

The people who are "playing the victim" - are doing just that ... they are annoyed if people convert - if on air - it makes them feel worse - it makes them feel that others would make them feel "subdued" towards doing the same ... It scares them to see people convert ... the intolerance is not coming from the Muslims - it is coming from them ...

Manno, about putting ourselves in their shoes... I've already done that in my mind... The Netherlands is one of the secular countries where muslim minorities feel so intimidated that we had this Dutch guppan amongst us who said she wanted to emigrate elsewhere as soon as she could. Let's say they showed a muslim converting to another religion on Dutch tv, should muslims also react so strongly to that? If they did, it might make sense to you, but it still won't make sense to me but that certainly won't mean that I'm condoning discrimination, would it?

Twisting my words again. I said it is understandable why the dominant religion of a country would be the most celebrated/popular religion in the country. Where did I say discrimination is understandable? Did you not read when I said I stand by the Pakistani minorities in speaking up against the persecution and putting pressure on the government to put an end to it? What does that tell you - that I not only condone discrimination but am also turning a blind eye to it?

Jeez, I have not and will never defend discrimination. All I was saying was I don't get the uproar over a tv show because if we were to start listing stuff in the media that could potentially incite hatred, I could list hundreds of things that the so-called secularists seem to be okay with. That's all I was saying, don't twist or complicate it, please.

BBQ one thing I honestly try not to do is twist anyones word. Of course discrimination happens in India against Muslims and happens against minorities in Pakistan. Most here are decent - andnno doubt in your posts you have stood against discrimination against minorities.

Where I respectfully differ from you i1) this Maya lady has a reputation to play the conservative card
2) this type of tamasha is not healing - rather it has potential to create insecurity among minorities

I said the status of Islam in an Islamic state is greater for obvious reasons... pretty straight forward common sense statement. Just like Catholicism is the most popular religion here in the Republic of Ireland, and Protestanism does not enjoy the same status here as it does in Northern Ireland. I'm not sure how I can rephrase this to clarify myself better. Suffice to say, I wasn't justifying discrimination of any group whatsoever.

And this has taken place every where, and I never said Pakistan is any exception. The world media is full of such videos showing people converting from one religion to another, it’s perfectly fine. But our pathetic media is in it only for the ratings and money. Most of our idiotic TV channels will happily show the video of your wedding ceremony, it they know it will bring them cash.

Such programmes should not be shown on television as in Pakistan religious minorities are less than 5% and have a very low status. Most of the people in Pakistan who clean toilets are Christians especially in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. There are successful Christians in Pakistan too but we need to look at the majority. Hindus will be considered in lower regard as they are not people of the book. There are quite a few Hindus in the Tharparkar area and they have good relations with Muslims but they have to take the lower step. Hindus are free to convert to Islam but if it was the other way around, blood will be spilt.

The media needs to be responsible and show minorities in a positive way and making the rest accept them for what they are. They should not be the victims of the intolerant mindset that Pakistanis hold in general.

Islam gives freedom to other religions to practice their faiths freely, so in that sense everyone is free to do so in Pakistan.

Pakistan was created because muslims were not really given that freedom in India.

Btw, I think converting religion is a personal thing and should not be made into viewing entertainment, especially as it is likely to offend the people of the faith being abandoned.
