Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

A Pakistani Hindu’s conversion to Islam live on television during a prime-time Ramadan chat show has sparked criticism on behalf of religious minorities in the overwhelmingly Muslim country.
In just five minutes, the 20-year-old introduced as Sunil officially changed his religion under a cleric’s guidance.

A packed studio audience congratulated him and shouted out suggestions for his new Muslim name before he was renamed Mohammad Abdullah – the consensus choice.

Abdullah insisted on Friday that he had been a willing convert.
“I have accepted Islam by my own will and my family has no objection,” he told AFP by telephone from the Ansar Burney Welfare Trust, where a staff member said he has worked as their office boy for the last six years.

But Pakistan has been criticised by rights groups for showing an increased lack of tolerance towards religious minorities, who complain of discrimination, and critics blasted the show, broadcast by private channel ARY on Wednesday.

The joy with which the conversion was greeted and the congratulations that followed sent a clear signal that other religions don’t enjoy the same status in Pakistan as Islam does,” wrote Dawn, Pakistan’s oldest newspaper, on Friday.
In a country where minorities are already treated as second-class citizens in many ways, this served to marginalise them even further,” it said.

It was a second recent controversy for chat show host Maya Khan, who was this year sacked by a rival channel after chasing couples in a public park, accusing them of behaving immorally.

Ramesh Kumar, a leader of the Pakistan Hindu Council, told AFP that Wednesday’s** program would encourage intolerance**.

“We are already intimidated against. The government gives little heed to the kidnapping of Hindus and forced faith conversion of our girls. Please don’t do things that make us more alienated,” he told AFP.

Talat Hussain, who hosts a political show on private television channel DawnNews, also warned against turning religion into mass entertainment.
“Think about how Muslims would feel when Buddhists in Burma show similarly a Muslim being converted in a live TV show,” he told AFP.

AFP: Live conversion on Pakistan TV stirs anger

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

phew!!
Anyways, Congrats for him :)

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

M'A it is something to be happy about, but the issue is...

Are minorities in Pak really treated as bad as Dawn News made it seem in that article??
Do you think by celebrating his conversion on live TV that it would affect, negatively or positively, how Pakistanis are towards other religions in our country?

I was honestly shocked reading this. I was expecting to read a positive article. But this one just made it seem like we're evil people who celebrate our religion (which every culture does) and look down on others.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

I can expect anything from Pak Media now!! Achhai ki ummeed nahin ki jasakti in logo se!!

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

DAWN caters a few idiots too. :)

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

I don’t read paki news so I have no idea :bummer:

I’m just confused why this was made into such a big deal.

1 - there are tons of conversions happening daily, I’m sure. Why was this made into such a big deal?
2 - Why does everyone think this is going to affect how everyone is towards minorities?
3 - Was it only broadcasted on TV because he was a Hindu converting to Islam?

Mujhe kya pata. :konfused:

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

Agree with Talat Hussain. What kind of message we are sending to our non muslim brothers and sisters, that you will only get the same respect and status once you convert to Islam? This approach is not right, this is going to promote intolerance and sense of fear and insecurity among minorities.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

Faith is a personal matter, I don't know why we need to publicise it when someone changes their faith.

That said, this doesn't sound like a purposely publicised conversion aired just to rub it in the hindus' faces. This happened to be a live show where the guy happened to convert by choice. Don't know why anyone would be offended unless this was a forced conversion or the tv channel had some malicious agenda?

And isn't it self-explanatory why other religions don't enjoy the same status in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan as much as Islam does? The whole hindu vs muslims shebang was the reason Pakistan was created in the first place. Decades later, we still haven't moved on I guess.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

Happy for the guy.... but im not really in favor of doing this infront of the whole world...whether we like it or not other minorities will feel threatenend by this :(

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

They are treated worse than the Dawn newspaper describes.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

Oh... :(

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

PA Mods, do you mind updating description of this Sub forum (PA) to

"This forum is dedicated to matters related to Pakistan's politics, economy, international relations, national development, defence & strategic issues as well as all aspects of Kashmir and the freedom struggle and conversion by a hindu to Islam."

So that this post in this PA makes more sense to me and others. Jazakallah Khair

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

one more giant step backwards for Pakistani society.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

So What, where does in Pak Ka Matlab Kiya Laa Ilaaha iLLallah do you see any rights for minorities? At least they dont exist in this slogan for any of Pakistanis who live in Pak society.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

At one end there is gloating over someone converting to the religion one likes and on the other hand there is criticism to show that over TV.

Yes it is a personal matter but who are we telling this? To the ‘boy’ ?

The person did not object being shown on TV so what’s the problem?

It’s not like he was shown to be forced to convert. :smack:

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

I think you have a bit of confusion here.

The country was built not to degrade any other religion. It was made to have a place where Muslims would live under their preferred rules.

It happened a long time ago. The spirit was very different as you are trying to portray.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

yes, it was not a forced conversion, he did it out of his own will, but this is not the media is making at look like. this news is circulating everywhere and they are at making it look like, guy was forced and minorities are threatened in Pakistan, which we cant really deny completely. because unfortunetly it does happens.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

Does it really?

I mean I know a little about the whole Sunni vs Shea stuff… But I remember when I went to Pak, a Hindu family moved into the house across from ours and we were really nice to them. We even invited them to my cousin’s shadi (which was going on in our house).

Maybe I’m in need of some serious culture shock? :bummer:

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

But there is no direct relationship between the TV showing the willful conversion and minorities feeling threatened.

Re: Hindu boy converts to Islam in Pakistan

That's exactly what I was trying to ask.

How will showing this on TV, whether it was right or wrong, contribute to how someone will treat or mistreat someone else who is considered a 'minority' ?
