It's not natural, it's just a way to increase population as fast as you can. Religion also allows it only with strict reservation of equility which is not possible. If God wanted it that way He would have created 4 Mrs. Adams (Eves) for Mr. Adam.

actually, its NOT sanctioned by islam. that is a misunderstanding of what it says. its funny cos i was just discussing this with my grandfather, whoâs read the quran thoroughly. what it actually says is that you can have 4 wives, IF you can provide justice and love for them all EQUALLY. and that line is followed by But i know that you cannot because it isnt possible, and here âIâ refers to God. and when you think about it, it is against human nature to have identical feelings for four different people. you might think you can love them all equally and treat them all equally but for one, its hard to measure the equality and second, people are flawed, not perfect, and will probably not be able to fulfill that condition. therefore, its actually not allowed.
islam only allows a second wife while the first one is living, if the first one is barren, i.e. cannot have children.
its also illegal in pakistan to have multiple wives unless you provide a signed statement to the court and ask for permission. and one of the way of getting this permission from your existing wife, is by abusing her and forcing her to sign that paper. then you bribe the local cops and make sure they donât see any visible marks of abuse, and youâre home free, so to speak. i think thats why it happens amongst illiterate people⌠or am i wrong in that assumption?
as for nothing repugnant about it- iâd say there is! if people are arguing that marriage is a state between a man and a woman when it comes down to gay marriages, well then marriage is also a state between ONE man and ONE woman too. i think you would be disrespecting your wife if you decided to get another one. what could/would your first wife have to lack for you to want another one? more sex? more kids? more company? more jaheyz? what?

Some scientist believe that, as nagging is a universal phenomenon in women, it has to do with womensâ evolutionary way of preventing their men escaping to others. Men in relationship realize quickly that nagging of one woman in hand is not better or worse than the one in the bush.

Let me put this in context here, people need to understand that marrying 4 women is allowed in Islam but it is strictly discouraged and there are very strong conditions attached. Think about it this way, eating pork is ALSO allowed in Islam if you are forced to eat it under threat of harm or if you have NOTHING to eat.

IF we lived in a world where there were widows unable to feed their children, OR if the younger men were all killed off in a war well then I'd be accepting that there MAY be a need for it...AS intended in the Koran!! Otherwise, sorry guys, keep your fantasies to yourselves and make an effort to keep your ONE wife content.

^ keep your Western ideas to yourself. It is perfectly lawful and in accordance with the customs of the many Muslim tribes that inhabit Pakistan and the surrounding regions to have four wives.
In fact, in the NWFP the practice is very common and I don't see why it should have to stop to accommodate the fatuous ideas of Western wannabas and others who want to see Pakistan "modernise", i.e. become more Hindu.

It is perfectly lawful in very specific circumstances and is highly discouraged. Just because something is common in the NWFP doesnât mean that God approves. Is homosexuality, which is prevalent in a lot of NWFP tribes, sanctioned by God? Is honor killing, which is prevalent in the NWFP, sancionted by God. Go learn to argue before biting the head off of anyone who doesnât agree with your pathan customs.

^ Lol this is real funny (and actually rude to Mamaof3 the way its written). I belong to a punjabi family and no one in my family has married more than once except for an uncle whose first wife seperated from him. I dont see this is as a western idea.

^That's also not the practice in our family. No one ever had a second wife; even they can feed/support more than one. No matter they are living in west or east. Islam has discouraged the tasteful people, who want more and more.

My "western ideas" and my views on multiple wives actually come from reading the Koran. Unlike many western folk, I see nothing wrong with multiple wives WHEN ITS AS INTENDED which is typically never the case. Like I said...widows who are unable to care for their children, widespread famine, infertility. CARING for fellow man....NOT giving in to lustful overload.
Actually mr wunder, my hubby is from NWFP and is a strictly monogomous man and comes from a family who practices monogomy. Yes, you CAN "get away with it", it IS legal. But its nothing but an excuse to give in to lust...never have we met a polygamist who married for any other reason.
