So, I started receiving greeting cards. The ones from my company and vendors are very politically correct wishing me Happy Holidays. But others from friends are semi religious / semi holidayish. Now what really threw me off is a card I received from the mother of my daughter’s kindergarten friend. The card has “Jesus the Saviour” on the front. Inside it quotes a saying from the Bible and she writes very openly some religious greetings. Now she knows well what religion I am.
I honestly have no problem wishing someone a merry Christmas neither do I mind if someone wishes me the same in person, but for someone to pen it down and make it ONLY religious is a bit odd, especially in this day and age of political correctness.
OK, I am done. and by the way a very happy Eid and happy holidays to all!
Oh what if I send her a card with a couple of bakraas and a cow and a smiling qasaaee with a knife in his hand…Eid Mubarak!
This year, I’ve particularly seen more than usual coverage in media of how “Happy Holidays” or “Seasons Greetings” is diminishing the role of Christianity in Christmas. Apparently, the Christian conservatives view is as a secular war on their religious holiday. That lady may have sent you that card to make a point – although it’s a little over the board if the intent was to register a protest.
I might be totally off here but can it be a cue of some sort if she doesn’t want her daughter to be that close with your daughter ???
Its a bit odd but you can send her regular Happy Holiday card so she can realize it.
UTD :
TLK:but its their cell phone or land line so they are not offending anyone its their property. Or people have lots of things in their houses regarding their religion so what you do? When you go to their house do you mind that Its their property.
It is offending what happens to FG or you leave a message to any non muslim starting AOA or Bissmillah.
On the same token, I've heard out going messages on Home or Cell phones of many muslims living in North America, that starts with Assalam-ulekeum.
Is that polite if a christian or hindu is calling them and gets that voice mail
I do see your point and if someone uses their cell phone or even home phone for business/professional purposes as well as personal use, I'm sure they'd be wary of this...
In fg's case however, this was more directed / personalized rather than broadcasted / general .
its a good opportunity for you to talk to your kids about your religion, and how it is different from other.
and if your daughters frends mother really knows about Christianity, than discuss those quotes with her
at least i would have done that (but do some research work as well. )
FG tum shakal se pakistani christian lagtey ho na iss liye bheja ho ga uss ne card :p
It was obviously wrong of her to send you such a card, but why is your daughter's mother sending you cards to begin with? She is like those people who come knocking at the doors to preach. May dad usually starts giving them islamic lectures, hehe. you should do something similar; send her a card with islamic stuff on it and do your part in tableegh :D
^^exactly. there is no imposition of beliefs in that greeting but then again not all non-muslims would know what it meant so maybe it would end up being offensive that way.
