When I see them behaving like or worse (i.e. in the case of “dress slutty”, “dress sexy”, etc.) than non-hijabis I lose respect for them. It saddens me to see that they truly are no closer to Allah than the average girl on the street that is dressed sexy or slutty. (I could go a step further and say that she perhaps has the guts to do it openly rather than sleazing it out with her gal friends behind closed doors but that would be inflammatory, wouldn’t it. )

Forgive me if I’m misreading this, but are we talking about actions that take place out in public (like clubbing/dating/drinking/smoking?) or what happens indoors (i.e. the parties?

Not that I’m arguing for or against hijabis and their level of imaan…but if something is going on behind closed doors, outside of hte public eye, do we still have a right to criticize?

I don’t think “sexy” is as bad as it used to be. To better clarify, for some, a pair of well fitted jeans and a teeshirt and having hair blow dried/straightened is “sexy”…so it doesn’t have to mean you’re coming out of a pinup.

I know plenty of people who use the word “slutty/sleazy” as an inside joke, and not to really describe what their parties are like.

Yes my friends will be impressed and love me for me whether I wear an abaya or jeans or a dress, but if I feel like wearing a sleeveless shalwar kameez in front of girls only (which I have), is that really so bad?

I know…it sucks when people start to expect angel like behaviour from hijabis or bearded men…seriously, we are all a mixture of good and bad, this comical behaviour of good and bad, black or white doesn’t exist in real life unless you’re talking about some psycho serial killer or a wali.

Hijabb is suppose to be a symbol of modesty not only in clothing but in over all demeanor and thats why people find it odd when a hijabbi is acting wild. Because at one instance you are telling one thing to the world by doing hijab and next you are going wild and doing inappropriate things. Ps I don't have problem with anyone wearing whatever and smoking drinking..... I do have problem with hypocrites of any culture or religion.

I don't get why non-hijabis are so deeply affected by things that are not directed towards them. Everyone thinks everyone else is purposely doing things to please and displease them, what an egocentric world we live in :/

So lets flip the perspective ..

lets say that there is a known (or hidden) bad character woman who lives in this community. She smokes, drinks, goes to dance parties and sleeps around. But whenever she hears azaan, she covers her head with scarf.

would you call her hypocrite?

^ TLK I actually know someone like that (kind of), she curses, smokes pot, dresses provocatively and slept around...but when it came to azaan, she was very strict about having her head covered....I know someone else who does the same, but without fail she prays 5x a day...in the latter one I do feel bad about judging that aspect because I know myself and many others..who don't pray 5x a day...so whose to say whose better or worse?

what's so horrible about a hijabi girl smoking? drinking, sure..but smoking? is smoking considered immoral now?

with attitudes as judgmental as these, do we also expect good hijabi women to be dormant in their intimate lives (with their husbands, for clarification) ? it wouldn't suit them/their image after all to be playful and naughty, even if it is within limits of what is Islamically allowed, would it.

I admit up until a few years ago I judged hijabis as well, because I wans't one and I was sick of hte "if you wear a hijab you're a good girl and if you don't you're a slut" argument I always got... but after meeting many hijabis and knowing them...its just a piece of cloth on the head. So yes, I know hijabis who are "good" and who are "bad" and non-hijabis who are "good" and "bad"..

Hijab or headscarf is cultural too, majority of Arabs women wear it just as a cultural thing and not necessarily a religious thing. So you can never tell a person's moral status just by an extra piece of fabric, the conduct has to be included in hijab.

A lot of people here are egocentric. But what to do? LolI think I can understand why some people state that they are let down by hijabis when they act inappropriately in their eyes. It's the same way i feel about some people in this forum. It's disappointing to see someone who I had respected once before, but after their inappropriate behavior my view on them is totally changed. Btw, I put my hijab for Allah because to me it's a fardh to do so. I didn't do it to represent my religion. That is for all Muslims.

I used to get upset at some hijabis' inappropriate behaviour too but then I realized that just like other humans hijabis come in all type of shapes and sizes too.
