hair extensions ..

Re: Hair extensions

Human hair extensions are considered haram by a quite a few scholars and with synthetic extensions some say they're fine, some say they're not.. The argument that it's 'deceiving people' is a bit dodgy, u could say the same about using a paler shade of foundation, fake tan or coloured lenses (which are generally allowed.. unless your intention is to convince a guy you're marrying that that is your real eye colour or something).. Btw the same scholars who say hair extensions are haram full-stop also say the same for false lashes..

Re: Hair extensions

I've had extensions sewn/weaved in and when its first sewn in it hurts a lot but eventually you get used to it. They basically create a french braid using extra false hair to thicken it moving horizontally across the back of your head and then sew the hair into that french braid. Mine grew out in a month but I also wash my hair everyday. I a pack from Sally Beauty and I paid $20 to have one track weaved in which was enough for me and I had a lot left over. The only thing I would be weary of is when you take them out a bunch of your hair will come out with it. I'd do it again for a special occasion or something that warranted really long hair but I wouldn't do it just because.

Re: Hair extensions

I wonder if there are options for curly hair since curly hair is very hard to match to considering curl patterns are so different.

Re: Hair extensions

Thanks for clearing that up!

My hair has really thinned out as I have breastfed all my kids and it's really taken its toll on my hair and teeth. I would just like to feel womanly again!

Re: Hair extensions

Have you considered taking biotin vitamin supplements? I take it and really helps my hair grow.

Re: Hair extensions

did some reading on Biotin…and while it is very good for some other concerns…there is little evidence to suggest that it can improve your hair…

Re: Hair extensions

^^ I guess it depends on the individual because it worked my hair and nails.

Re: Hair extensions

Biotin worked for me as well for both hair and nails. I NEVER grow my nails because they break, but these days they're a lot stronger and aren't breaking. I also found that while my hair still falls, I'm losing less hair. So I would recommend it.

Re: Hair extensions

I recently purchased the "Luxy Hair" Clip-inExtensions...I already have long hair, but I just got it for volume...They were so soft and natural feeling when they arrived and I was so excited to wear them...it takes a bit of a practice to put them in your hair without the clips showing, tight enough, etc. I really liked how it made my hair look thick from the back, However I wore them 2-3 times and put it away...it's just the feeling that theres all these clips in your hair....you can never really enjoy yourself while wearing it when out to a party (the only times I wore them) Because you're constantly checking them if they have gotten loose, or are they showing? Etc...Also, my husband likes to touch my hair all the time, and lol it was a total turnoff for him when he felt metal bumps in my hair....and believe me guys don't like it at all...

It's nice to wear for a party or so, but I wouldn't wear clip in extensions on a daily basis....perhaps the sewed ones/glued are different

Re: Hair extensions

Yes, I am taking these as my blood tests came back normal and there seems to be no problem with my thyroids, hence the hair loss. I haver been told by a friend to also consider horsetail tablets as that is also a hair loss remedy but I think I will stick with biotin for now. How many mgs are you taking?

I have also ordered some clip on hair extensions from eBay and if they suit me, then will get the weave put in. They are done by Afro-carribean stylists. I would rather have weaves put in than heat and glue stuck in my hair.

Re: Hair extensions

I'm taking 1000mg. I've heard prenatal vitamins also help hair growth.

Just a word of warning - when the weave grows out, it'll take a chunk of your hair with it when you take them out. It's very taxing on your natural hair.

Re: Hair extensions

Thanks for that. Am going to look into the pre-natal stuff as well.

As regards the weave, are you speaking from experience? I read that if you have them removed regularly, like say every 2 months and then re-fitted, it won't pull on your hair?

Re: Hair extensions

Yep.. Weaves will damage your hair. They essentially put a french braid/cornrow horizontally along your scalp and sew the track of hair into that. The more tracks of hair, the more braids/cornrows and this is damaging to your hair over the long term. This is the only weaving that I know of - not sure if they do them any other way. But when I had it done and it grew out 2-3 weeks later, a chunk of my hair that had been braided to hold the weave came out. That really wasn't fun. If you get a full head weave, your entire hair will be braided and the tracks sewn into those braids. There is supposedly a method of weaving called "no braids, no glue". I'm not sure what it is but I've heard its less damaging and less painful.

Re: Hair extensions

Jessica Simpson Fineline extensions come with a really really thin band at the top so they blend in more easily.. Haven't tried them myself but my cousin uses them and it looks brilliant..

Generally speaking, if anyone has thinning hair the longer lasting methods of hair extensions aren't recommended as it's obviously extra stress on the bonds but there are loadsss of different methods nowadays.. One that won't damage your hair at all involves having the weft on a wire loop and you basically just flip it on your head lol (like a halo!).. literally takes seconds and no clips or anything to worry about..

Re: Hair extensions

What are these halo extensions??? I'm interested!

Re: Hair extensions

I had the same issue with hair that is, after having kids reallly effected my thick hair, I got my bloods done and found out I had real low iron levels hence y my hair was falling everywhere, since I'm taking iron tabs it's stopped get ur selve checked.

I literally lost 2/3 of my hair !

Re: hair extensions ..

I recently got my 20" clip ins from dolcevittahair.com in a 220gm set for $160. They r nice and I am enjoying them very much!

Re: different types of hair extension

Did a search on hair extensions and came up with this - thanks Deeba for the really interesting and informative info. You say you’ve been using extensions for ages - do you then use the glue-in ones? Is that what you recommend? They do sound like the best option (longevity wise) but the downside is they seem the most damaging (I’ve heard the glue is really, really bad for you)

What are your thoughts?

Re: different types of hair extension

^I used to have the glued-in ones (from the age of 18ish to 23) then I switched to a different method which is basically tiny little knots made to secure each individual extension which are then heat sealed instead of using glue..

They last the same amount of time (they say 3 to 4 months but I have kept mine in wayy longer before with no damage).. Heat sealed bonds need a little snap to break them and with glue the bonds need to be dissolved (usually with acetone) then brushed out.. That is when little bits of ur hair can come out with them.. Please go to someone reputable cos 1. it will hurt if they're not careful and 2. to try and prevent damage.
