Girl Names

amelle is prounced how? Ameleee?

Re: Girl Names

salaam,
sorry to bring a different view point regarding names. i can't help but notice that in the desire to have unique names for their children, especially among Pakistani Muslims, they inevitably pick names that are not islamic. sometimes, they aren't even aware of the word's meaning and/or its' origin which, as a result, is against islam. thank you. u may not agree with me but sorry this is what i had to say

Re: Girl Names

^ i think this whole thread is about names with significant meanings though... did you read through it?

nope, amelle would be pronounced ah-mel, with a soft "h" sound.

Could all the people on soapboxes about "Islamic names" please define what they mean by that phrase before judging everyone else?

kthxbye.

PS: Most posts in this thread have either listed names with meanings, are discussions about the implications of meanings, or questions about meanings.

Re: Girl Names

By the way, folks, parents and parents in law don't seem to like Leyla. Most of the elders seem to find the name lacking in good meaning, because night is symbolic of darker and more illicit things. I said it's only a matter of how you interpret the symbol, since in Islam it's a time of peace, prayer, and reflection. But anyway, I had my own reservations about the name, so I'm going to keep a look out for others.

Hubby and I both like Anaya/Inaya, I've just heard it's becoming common amongst the new generation. The meaning is nice.

**
i do NOT argue and its not in me to engage in meangless back N forth arguments. islamic names are those which do not contridict islamic beliefs or come from followers of other religions because names identifies u. if u have a Hindu name then a person who just hears ur name will not know that u r a muslim and hence deprive u of muslim brotherhood which is the essence of islam. a sense of community and brotherhood.

i will stop at this note and will not respond regarding thsi matter...sorry**

Re: Girl Names

^ but who is giving their child a hindu name? that was never discussed in this thread. we're only talking about names with good meanings that come from cultures other than pakistan, as do a lot of muslims in this world.

sahar, too bad about Leyla, but yay for Inayah! i know a few little girls with that name (all extremely adorable) and it is really pretty. personally, i prefer it spelt with an I as i think it forces the correct pronounciation as opposed to when it starts with an A.
what about Eshaal (arabic, means flower of heaven) or Zoya (persian, means twilight)? Zoya is also greek and means "life". they're also very pretty.

Re: Girl Names

Hashmat Usmani: No one's asking for an argument; simply an explanation. You are accusing people of doing something unIslamic. The least you can do is clarify your viewpoint. The point of forums and conversation is to deepen understanding of others' perspective, whether or not you change your own. Don't confuse that with arguing.

So is the name "Elizabeth" Islamic? It is a Hebrew word for a promise or oath of God. The Arabic version is "Fidel". But can you be a Muslim with the name Elizabeth?

Re: Girl Names

it might be in the spelling though… Eiliyah is a bit hard to figure out in type (i admit, i read it as Aliya kind of, but i’m guessing its more like A (as in A, B, C, D, etc.)-LEAH, right?) how about a more phonetic spelling? Aileah?
its a totally beautiful name, btw, and the meaning is gorgeous.

too bad about Zoya but since she’s never really called it, do you think you could get away with it? if you liked it enough, that is.

this is a really good site for names- http://www.behindthename.com/

Re: Girl Names

I've been browsing that site too!

I think it's like eh-lee-yah.

Re: Girl Names

"eh" like "canadian, eh?"

what about Aelia? that gets it across nicely, no?

or wait, is it EL-eea, like Elliot but without the "ot"? so then it would be easy- Ellia or Elliya or Elliyah or Ellea.

So does Tahrim and Tehreem/ **Tahreem have different meanings then?! Anyone know? :)

I had the baby on 1 September and its a baby girl, we shall name her SANIYA meanig Radiant, bright.

I just hope people here don't jump on me saying its not a real islamic name.

If you want to see the pic, then they are in my private blog, you need to add me as your friend.

:)

Re: Girl Names

Definition of a muslim name:

Muslims must choose a name that has a righteous meaning, that will befit and bring blessings to the child throughout his or her life. It is reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so give yourselves good names." (Hadith Abu Dawud).

Re: Girl Names

awww, congratulations saadia! saniya is a lovely name with a beautiful meaning! :)
i read that it was a natural labour in that other thread- you are SO BRAVE!

Re: Girl Names

ah thank you! :)
everyone is brave, when I was labour I was thinking of those females who don't have hospital around, a midwife who is constantly taking care of your needs and the best medical equipment, just in case something happens, those females are more brave, but its forgatten when its over and the result is so fine! that you would want to do it again and again.

Many congratulations! Saniya is a beautiful name. May your baby have a long life inshallah. :)
