Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
the death toll has risen to 289 according to the Dawn Newspaper...it's extremely tragic yet i see NO mourning on TV channels...they are ALL busy with their political wrestling matches, morning shows and fashions talks ... so sad!
Re: Garment factory fire kills over 60
btw the company which employs that many people should be big and should have a name? why arent they reporting the name of the company?
You're absolutely right, they should be reporting the name of this irresponsible company. 300+ perished is by no means a minor disaster.
we know whats going to happen, committee will be formed, empty shallow promises will be made ... but not a single culprit will be brought to justice....
+1
It'll be reported for a few days, then various channels will milk the tragedy of the grieving families by splashing their stories with somber music for another week or so. But nothing solid, like reinforcing health and safety measures, will be done.
Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
Pakistani media is mostly shi**y. Don't expect much from them.
The most they can do is put Nusrat Fateh Khan's mourning alaap in the background.
Last night the toll was 25. All of a sudden, by dawn it is 300.
Never did I hear anything from them that this could turn into a tragedy the size that it did.
MQM announced 3-day mourning. Wow, how generous. That must have taken a lot from them to do that.
And what does that do for the affectees.
There was a similar fire a hundred years ago in America and after that laws were put in place for worker safety.
Hopefully there will be some action to prevent cr*p like this from happening in Pakistan. Maybe in another 100 years.

It was the Triangle Shirt Waist Fire in New York in March 1911.

Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
very sad…
my heart goes out to those left behind by poor workers who were likely the only bread-winners for their households…
these souls are gone but how many more will die from hunger and illness because they are not there to provide for them?
Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
A ginormous review excercise of safety systems will kick off now, only to be fizzled out in a week or so. That's the SOP in Pakistan.

EXACTLY! committees and commissions will be installed and nothing will ever happen...the owners of the factory have NOT been arrested but their names entered in ECL...i bet the same people will reopen another garment factory with little or no improvements somewhere else in Karachii under another name and then the business will be as usual as if nothing happened.

Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
What is worse is that we continue to face such tragedies every other day, yet learn absolutely NOTHING from them.
It's not just the factory owner responsible, it is not just the building control authority responsible. It is actually the negligent, careless, indifferent attitude of our society which is the main culprit.
If we continue to not learn lessons from our mistakes then sadly such incidents will continue to happen.
As far as apprehending the factory owner, only a fool will believe that he will get the punishment. Money is power, and powerful don't get punished in the Islamic Jamhooriya. He too will be released when things settle down and people forget about this tragedy. Just give it a week!
Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
you are right, not just bldg owner, everyone who was involved in this project is the culprit. they all need to brought to the court. I was shocked to hear that fire broke out in the same factory few months back as welll, even after this incident they didnt take fire safety laws seriously, entire factory had just one single exit door? each one of them is a murderer of these innocent workers.

A very sad incident. Owners should be charged with 289 murders and should pay the compensation to all affected. I have met very recently, a big garment factory owner of Karachi, who supplies his garments to America's chain stores. What his words about paying taxes to government when I said that here no one can escape without paying taxes, I am repeating his words here. I am sure 99% of these paki bs businessmen are like him.
*"kisi ke baap main himat hay ke hum se koi tax wasool karay, hum tax kyon den". These b@stards are willing to pay bhatta and monthlies to tax officers but no taxes to government. How the hell Pakistan will survive if billionaires like him treating country and its laws like that?

I agree with that. These people make money from the country but when it comes to paying taxes they run away. Though small part of the blame goes to governments as well for not providing security, infrastructure to these industries, they end up with their own security, their own power generations, pay bhatta to mafias etc.

Due to their unlawful attitude, it is the common people who ultimately suffer as above. This is an eye opener, all these factories in Karachi and Lahore be audited for safety immediately. If found guilty of violation of any safety, the factories should be closed and owners should be heavily penalized.

Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
its one of the most horrific news stories i have heard. i cant begin to imagine what the victims went thru and how the families must be coping.
the story of three sisters dying together in the factory is gut wrenching.
Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.
Terrible and devastating!!! There seems to be absolutely no concept of worker safety, value of human lives or law enforcement! I assume in this case as well, the law would only apply to the weak and poor.
Re: Garment factory fire kills over 300
did they find out about the cause of fire?
Pakistan Industrial laws exist only on paper, its govt responsibility to make sure these laws were implemented.
