Re: From Rasoi ghar to Kitchen
See, you guys are assuming that there even used to be a separate room for cooking and other stuff. In villages back in the day, there was no "rasoi ghar" or "bawarchi khana" There was a corner of the open area, which was also the central area of the house. That was also a very modern invention, to do the cooking inside. Normally it was done outside the house, since the fire produced a lot of smoke (depending on which source of fuel you used), and you couldn't bring that smoke inside the house. The whole bawarchi khana vs rasoi ghar is a new invention.
I think you are right, but the place / portion of the house which was allocated for cooking might have been referred with some name. On other hand, in elite class, these facilities might have been used for longer period of times.
As far as I know Hindu traditions, there were some religious practices attached with rasoi ghar including lepa poti and as per literature available on chhoot chhat they used to wash it, if a non-Hindu (Muslims) visit that place.
Re: From Rasoi ghar to Kitchen
I forget the Urdu name for it.
A similar thing for masaalah peesna in Punjabi is called “Sil VaTTA”.

Re: From Rasoi ghar to Kitchen
so what? Hindi is the original language of the land and Urdu got sizable vocabulary from it. Rasoi was not religious term like Mandir. Its common household name.
true, but we, the Indian Muslims, do not use this word...it's more associated with Hindi speakers. that's what i was trying to emphasize. you will not hear Indian Muslims use this word.

OK I have a question for all you mard hazrat (since you’re the only ones posting here so far) what is this instrument called, and what’s the paddle shaped thing inside the matka called. For the life of me I can’t remember it right now http://www.blog.gomataseva.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/hand_churning_butter_for_Ghee.jpg

Not really, it wasn't referred to as a "kitchen" It was a place where it was easy to create fire, and you cooked, boiled water, and brought chillam for the hookah from that place. The lingo of calling it bawarchi khana or rasoi ghar only slipped in much much later on, only in the last 60+ years or so. Bawarchi khana as a term literally means a room/box for the bawarchi. But sicne there was no official room to cook things in and store your utensils, there was no need to call it such.
Re: From Rasoi ghar to Kitchen
Are you sure? It doesn’t seem a familiar term to me. And 5/10 marks, I also asked what’s the danda with paddles called, this thing http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7ifOWK2lh6Y/TFFtnnKr8uI/AAAAAAAACaA/XSAQP9WIyyw/s400/DSCN9628.JPG
