People get more emotional when they see bombing of a country, invited or uninvited. When Saddam became a monster US is not free of any guilt, for gassing of Kurds again US is not free of guilt... US kept its friendship knowing he gassed kurds. The list goes on my friend. French are not the only ones who made Saddam into what he was, US also played a big role into it.
As Faisal pointed out, people do talk about it, but the intensity is comparatively low because no one here lives in France so no one really knows whats going on other than what we see in news.
If you think Chirac scored 10 points for being anti-War and lost 1 point for banning scarves.... that could be your scale or analysis, but not mine for sure.

You guys are getting so incensed about banning head scarves in France but why dont you stand up and say that the same rights be accorded to minorities in Saudi, Iran and the like...
True these countries profess secularism but then you will have to understand that when their citizens travel to Islamic countries, they dont get any rights..
Dont start off by saying that there is no true Islamic country and the like.
I would rather suggest atleast some of you to look into yourselves and understand that if you dont give something you can get everything.
In your own countries, mention of freedom might land you in jail..
For eg a saudi woman(a very hypothetical situation but still) would want to sunbathe !!! What would be the repurcussions.

mere bhai, who says what Iran and Saudi are doing is good? nobody likes that! but the problem is that countries like Saudi have been in good books of some countries. Those same countries had a problem with Saddam who killed his people, but when it came to Saudi everybody ignores the vanishing of anti-Saudi people from Kingdom.

Sheikh Tantawi says headscarf not fard!
The Grand Sheikh of the al-Azhar mosque in Egypt, Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, was speaking after talks with French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.
Speaking in Cairo in the presence of Mr Sarkozy, Sheikh Tantawi said the veil was the divine obligation of Muslim women.
But he added that that this obligation did not apply if the women lived in a non-Muslim country like France.
He said Muslim women had to obey the rules of the host country in which they live, under what he described as dire necessity.
This appears to be a reference to a rule in Islamic law which stipulates that when forced to choose between two evils, a Muslim is allowed to choose the lesser one.
In other words, it is less harmful for a Muslim girl in France to refrain from wearing the veil at school than breaking French law.
Sheikh Tantawi’s comments will probably go some way towards pleasing the French Government, which apparently wanted to enlist the support of a prestigious institution of Islam in their conflict with French Muslim girls.
But it is difficult to see how these girls will be swayed by the opinion of Sheikh Tantawi.

Not here to attack muslims, but senior muslims who make comments need to be accounted and yet again Tantawi puts out another contradicting statement out to the world. After saying Riba is allowed Tantawi issues Fatwa allowing Riba Tantawi now says you don’t have to follow islam if you live in non muslim country. By using such a weak argument is he also saying someone don’t have to pray because they live in Europe or America. Also if anyone needs confirmation they do not need to take my word or have a 10 foot beard or be called scholar or sheikh the quran clearly states hijab is obligation for the muslim sisters!

I would like to see a broder range of scholatic opinion before I comment.
It has been narrated that when the Prophet (saw) was once asked who were the best of the people, he answered that they were the Ulema (scholars) and the Umara (rulers). He was then asked who were the worst of the people, he responded with the same response: the Ulema and the Umara.
It is from the Ulema that the Kitab and the Sunnah are interpreted, and the word of Allah (swt) is spread to the masses. It is also through the rulers that the word is implemented and practically demonstrated so that other nations can come to understand the light of Islam.
Because the Ulema have such an important responsibility, they are also capable of great harm. Due to their position and the fact that the Ulema are the reference for the masses, if they are corrupt they will spread their corruption and misguide the masses with false interpretations and claims, similar to the rabbis amongst the Jews who would distort their scripture. In the Qur’an we are given their example as a warning:
"O People of the Book: Why do you mix truth with falsehood and
conceal the truth while you know?" [TMQ Ale-Imran: 71]
Alhamdulillah, many people from the Ummah has immediately seen through this disgraceful fatwa from Tantawi and have rejected it. It is yet another sign that the rulers and ulema of the Muslim world have lost the plot.
