Now if there is anyone who should be called "Moderate mullah", it could be one of Tantawi types, who would cut wings to "modernise".

I think you will find the ayahs in the quran on issue of hijab and covering are enough even for us muslims here who have little knowledge, but enough to know the right from the wrong!
and once again i take this opportunity to remind my brothers and sisters, living in the non-muslims lands, of the Quranic verse, that i so often bring up for them....
Quran 4:97
*Lo! as for those whom the angels take (in death) while they wrong themselves, (the angels) will ask: In what were ye engaged? They will say: We were oppressed in the land. (The angels) will say: Was not Allah's earth spacious that ye could have migrated therein? As for such, their habitation will be hell, an evil journey's end; *
having made clear to those in France about their situation, let us not cherish shaikh tantawi for his recent fatwa....
he is no more than a human, and like every human he too can make a mistake, which he clearly did in this case....
tomorrow if the French government stops muslims from praying i dont think even tantawi wud issue any fatwa saying that "In this case, if a Muslim observes the laws of a non-Muslim state, then from the point of view of Islamic law, he has the status of acting under coercion"....
imam abu hanifa (ra) was once passing by a group of children playing near a pit....
so he thought better to warn the kids of the hole and said "beware of falling"....
to this one kid replied "nay, but u r the one who shud beware of falling"....
this was no reply of disrespect....
this was to assert that the boy's fall wud hurt himself alone....
but the falling (physical or moral) of a scholar (especially one held in high esteem) means the fall of a nation....
the scholars r entrusted with a tough duty....
they share a part in the duty of the messengers, and if they go wrong, they misguide many....
may Allah guide us all and make us know better that whosoever imam or sheikh, allama or mufti, says anything that contradicts the Quran and Sunnah then his words r meaningless and hold no value for us....
Now here is a clever solution to the question of headscarves!

DUBAI, Aug 28 - An Iraqi militant group has kidnapped two Frenchmen and given the French government 48 hours to end a ban on Muslim headscarves, Arabic television station Al Jazeera said on Saturday.
The channel aired a brief video showing two men standing in front of a black banner bearing the name of the Islamic Army in Iraq. One man told the camera: “I would like to tell my family that everything is OK.”
Jazeera identified the men as George Malbrunot and Christian Chesnot. Last week, the French Foreign Ministry said two journalists with those names had gone missing in Iraq.
The journalists – who work for Le Figaro and Radio France International – were declared missing on the same day that Italy said freelance journalist Enzo Baldoni was also missing and that his driver had been reportedly killed.
