Thats what I dont get! why are saala and saali insults in urdu? are your wifes relatives supposed to be bad?? and whats saandu?

Saandu = My wife's sister's husband is my saandu

This is what I think why saala/saali are curse words for some people.

Lets say that a gali ka ghunda (street mob) tells me "saaley dafa ho ja"......I will get mad because by calling me saala, he means that my sister is his wife. I don't want a street mob for my sister!!! So basically people get mad because not just ANYONE can marry their sister, atleast not someone who lacks manners and has a bad character.

That's what I think :-s

I knew almost all of them except Humzulf.. i duno maybe its our family (xtended and immediate), mamu’s wife is mami.. never heard someone refer to someone as Mumaani ___

My father referred to my FIL as walid-saab..its the ffirst time i ever haerd that term..

Also I never understood why husband’s/father’s relatives are differentiated by ages (at least the men..younger brother is devar/chachu, older is jaith/taya) but the sisters aren’t.. all his sisters are considered nands, and forget the wife’s side, its just saalaa or saali…oh and how the hsuband’s bhabhis are all titled in relation to their husband..so like my devrani is a coupla years older than me but shes still considered “younger” in a way coz her fiance is my husband’s younger brother…

Just for curiousity sake - does anyone know the significance behind creating separate designations for each relationship? For example, in English, an Aunt is an Aunt, regardless of the side of the family she is from. Why does every relationship have a separate designation in Urdu , and why? Is it commonplace to use all of the terms? Is there a ranking system? For example, I understand that technically I would outrank my devrani's, but does the paternal side always outweigh the maternal side?

Just a few questions I've always wondered about but that my husband could never answer.... :-)

Same as Sarhoo as told by wise guy! Sandhoo is from Kashmiri language, I think.
