Family relations in Urdu

Since there are quite a few guppies who hardly know about family relations in Urdu I thought it would be useful to post a kind of relation dictionary English - Urdu. I´m sure I have missed a lot of relations here. There is one which I don´t even know myself as you can see below. So you are free to add more and I will edit this post to have a complete overview. Well, I know most of them, just the first two in the last para. are new for me.

I always get confused with that dharain jethaini thing.
But the rest i know its not that difficult Urdu Languange

kuch reshtey daaron ko galiyaan keyoon de rahey hain :konfused:

I guess you are referring to Saala/Saali. That really are the Urdu words for that relation and not gaaliyan. They are used in a negative sense in Bollywood movies though.

what would you call your khala's kids?

u missed jeth and sandu!

Cousins. Or is there any specific word for that as well?

Khala's kids are khala zaad behn ya bhai.

Sandu is punjabi, Urdu word for it is hamzulf.

She answered both questions I was gonna answer. For cousins, it depends. Chacha's kids are chacha zaad behan bhai..........maamo's kids are mamoo zaad behan bhai.......taaya's kids are taaya zaad behan bhai and so on.

You forgot 2 most important rishtey (somebody will know why :p)

Father of Son/dauther's wife/husband = Samdhi
Mother of Son/dauther's wife/husband = Samdhan

** The rishta that you are missing:

Wife of wife's brother = Saale-haar**

^^ Thanks for your input Shikra. I have updated my post with it. :k:

The new additions are:

Father of child´s spouse - Samdhi
Mother of child´s spouse - Samdhan
Wife of wife´s brother - Saalehaar

samdhi/samdhan r hindi and not urdu....

It's so complicated!

I give up.With those dewar jaith.Arghhh.Its driving me nuts.

I dont know half of these.

woo hoo, scored a perfect 100%

here is another oen you did not include

your tai's brother's humsulf's baita who is coming to US and you have to pickhim up and he will stay with you until he finds a place.

the name for this type of rishtay daar is

"aira ghera nathu khera"
"maan na maan mein tera mehmaan"

or my favourite

"jaan na pehchaan, galay laga kameena insaan"

if you can't remember any of these alqab, just call out "adam zaad"

:rotfl:

Another word for saas is khush daman.
Kinda funny ain't it?:)

These are used in Pakistan as well. I think it's called "Kudam" in Punjabi? or maybe in urdu as well?
