I dont think so. You have your women who invariably can't commit, cough cough just like men (nice to taste the medicine of your own sex, no?).
But the openness of divorce also gives a lot of women who are being abused courage to just leave. Its not worth staying in a relationship where a guy does not appreciate you and treats you like his chapal.

I know many and I do mean many guys here in the US with more than one wife. As long as they are married in Islam it does not matter weather or not they are married within the government they live in. Its really the same as American guys who are married but also have a girlfriend on the side, really no difference whatsoever.

acutally that's a good point that Maj brought up...dunno if anyone mentioned it yet or not..but u do c a lot of married men with gfs on teh side and one woman always gets screwed over..either hte wife or the side....the husband might leave the wife for his younger, prettier girlfriend or he might leave the gf pregnant and go back to his wife and there is nothing the gf cud do about it (legally)....
At least in Islam, both women are afforded equal rights under the law since adultery/extramarital affairs aren't allowed...

Newsflash - can someone do me a favor and put up the verse about marrying up to four women. Please also include the few lines above those verses that talk about orphans.
I have a friend who is taking this Islam class at the university, and her copy of the Quran has verses that specifically refer to orphans that "if you feel you can't treat the orphans fairly, then marry them, 1, 2, 3, or 4"....(Not the exact translation, but something like that).
Its translated by AJ Arberry.
I need something to compare with - I think that might be the wrong translation, but I'd like to see if there is something in that.

most muslim people and countries justify polygamy because it says in the quran it is ok. but what about the parts in the quran where women are given rights. did they just "accidentaly" skip over that part when they were writing the laws. people only listen to the parts of the quran they want to listen to and follow.
